Williams GP9 that the USPS tried to destroy in shipment.
I replaces all that was broken and straightened the frame and railings.Looks and runs great now. has an older kicked Goose horn.

Thanks.
12/16/20 Update: The pair just arrived. Going to switch them over to scale wheels and Kadees this weekend and will post photos.
Took the photos for my inventory database at the club Wednesday. Put MTH scale trucks and Kadee 745's on them yesterday. will run them on the layout tomorrow. It's harder to get the car apart than change out everything. Thanks again for the heads up, DG.
Two-railed and ready for testing.
Glad to help..they look nice with the scale wheels and Kadee couplers.
Also finished assembling a trio of Weaver 34-foot PS2 covered hoppers. I love the 34-foot PS2 hopper because it's a scale sized car that works well for smaller layouts. In 3-rail, they'll negotiate O-27 (13.5" radius) curves.
My understanding is that they also carry different commodities, which makes them suitable for various industries. I have a BUNCH of them in various road names which I'm going to eventually switch over to 2-rail.
Here are my MTH Premier CNW PS-2-CD high-sided covered hoppers.
They are accurately painted. One thing they could not recreate is the tiny, intricate CLINTON CAR SHOPS decal.
Also shown are the two Atlas O Trainman CGW/CNW PS-2 3-bay covered hopper.

Nice hoppers guys!
Steve at Mr. Muffin's Trains was kind enough to contact Lionel for me to see if these were still going to be made. He confirmed they would.
I just placed my order....
Lionel 3-18210 - LionScale - Woodside Reefer "Northwestern Refrigerated" (6-Car)
These will be my first Lionscale cars. I'm interested to review quality and build.

Those are the Weaver/Crown molds. Should be nice. If they're consistent with some of the more recent Lionel releases, converting them to scale wheels and Kadees should be pretty easy. I would opt for using Atlas replacement trucks as the Lionel 33" scale wheels are pretty expensive.

That's what I heard Matt. Based on what I've read, I'm hoping they really are as easy to 3RS or 2R with Kadees and scale wheels as Lionel has advertised.

I have the set of Lionel CNW 66-foot Mill Gondolas (nicely done cars, by the way) that I switched over to 2-rail. The conversion was pretty straight-forward with the Lionel wheel sets, and the cars were set up to take Kadees, but the wheels are code 145 tread width and I sometimes get derailments when I run them at the club. In hindsight, the Atlas trucks are a better call because they don't cost much more than the Lionel wheel sets and they have code 172 wheels. I inadvertently put the wrong bolsters in the first car and have since fixed it. I have a BUNCH of cars I'm switching over to 2-rail -- it's going to be a LONG project.
C&NW Geep pulling 5 grain covered hopper cars out from RIP track, thru car repair shop and going to main line.
Happy Friday! Westbound North Western manifest train with 4 engines MU running on main line of old Overland Route through Marshalltown, Iowa.
Here's a shot of our last custom car we did for the Mid-Continent Ry. Museum, depicting a car for the North Freedom Canning Co. Also, Lionel did make a reefer years ago, but I can't tell you the number right off hand. Also Lionel's version of C&NW 10-wheeler #1385; and the nice freight units from MTH.
Fantastic videos and pictures! I really enjoy coming back and finding so many.
- CGW, great shots on those night time shop photos.
- Jeff, I like the ten wheeler.
I'm in a bit of a holding pattern as I'm waiting on my 400 passenger car bodies. Eddy is a real cool cat.
I did however recently sell the fantasy steel Caboose shortly after the photos I posted because I was able to locate a Division Point DP-101 similar to the one you have Matt. Should have my hands on it relatively soon.
Many thanks to David in the UK for his pleasant communication. I appreciate the agreeable direct negotiation outside of the ridiculously fee intensive auction site.

Decided poke around a little bit today with my 3-rail Atlas O RS-1. I think I bought it for 70 bucks with no box and both of the couplers were broken off and dangling from the wires.
I bought the parts directly from Atlas to fix the pilots sometime ago. Well, let me tell you trying to take those shells off to see if I could remove the trucks.....Yikes! What a pain. I tried tracking the 3R coupler wires back to their source and finally gave up. I just snipped and secured them.
So I settled for just adding the scale couplers. Even that required some dremel work...
Not only that the process of putting in the coupler box is not simple. It was like building a ship in a bottle!
Got one done. The second will go easier now that I know.
Naturally, I'll have some painting to do. Yet it has great detail for a cheapie locomotive. It'll be a runner, I won't be entering any contests with it 😉.

What kind of trucks are those under the Atlas stock cars?
@AGHRMatt posted:What kind of trucks are those under the Atlas stock cars?
Matt,
They are the same original plastic trucks with Intermountain IRC20050 insulated 33" 2R wheels put in. These are the older Atlas 6222 Austrian made cars. I'd like to see anyone notice much difference while the train is moving.
Super easy modification. I can post a quick Vid tonight. Pop off the trucks, remove the plastic 3R coupler tongue, pop out the brake shoes pieces and wheels. Add a drop of oil to each journal hole, then the pointed IRC wheels. Using downward pressure and pinching in on the ends of each axle with both hands, work the truck back and forth on a piece of track untill the points work into the trucks enough to have them roll easy. I have a system to make sure all wheels are installed with the insulated wheels on the same side of every car. I put all the original parts in a baggie inside the car when I'm done installing the Kadees.
They then ride super smooth. I don't mind the plastic trucks because they have nice detail, ride low and smooth. I think they look great.
I've been picking up these old cars for peanuts whenever I seem the offered for next to nothing. I add Kadee 805 couplers with shims, 2R wheels and have been re-numbering with Tichy Train Group decals. I just think it's a fun and inexpensive way to get 2R/3RS CNW rolling stock. Trainman line now offers the same tooling cars for $79+ a piece but the new ones obviously have metal trucks.
Some other photos earlier in this thread.

Thanks. I had tried that before with one of mine. Didn't think about oil to seat the Intermountain wheels. I'll have to take another look at that.

Matt, here's a video I made this morning. Don't mind the idiot, er me, having trouble seating the car on the tracks towards the end!
Anyway, it gives you a better idea of what I was talking about. I found that, more than the oil, its the pressure from pressing the ends of the journals into the points of the wheels along with some downward pressure on the truck to the rails. I do it to work the trucks until the points cut/drill into the plastic enough to loosen and roll freely.
Will
I must say, That's one of the best demonstration videos I've seen in awhile .
Great demo video, Will. Last time I tried using the Intermountain wheels in an Atlas stock car I didn't pull the brake shoes and work the axles. I'm definitely going to revisit this option.
Thanks.
Looking forward to see the project completed Will. Good work so far.

@Trinity River Bottoms Boomer posted:Thanks Patrick. Though I wasn't raised in CGW territory, I witnessed my first F unit in Deramus red on the point of a southbound Katy freight as it was approaching Dallas during the summer of 1960. Mr. Deramus was at the throttle of M-K-T at the time and had borrowed some CGW power due to a Katy power shortage as many of their Mr. D's machines had been sent off for rebuilding/repowering. Of course he had come to Texas to run Katy, having left the CGW as their president.
Item: The majority of Katy followers dislike Deramus and his simplified "Deramus Red" color scheme including the "stretched" KATY herald. Personally, I'm a Fall Guy for the Deramus era on The Katy. When Barriger took over the president's seat of Katy in 1965, a lot of older power was traded to EMD for new GP40s and SW1500s, which saw CNW purchasing some of Katy rebuilded road switchers and F units and run off their final miles on the prairie.
Any CGW video clips would be appreciated.

No. This would be correct, as they did call the CNW "The backwards railroad" because they ran opposite of all the other railroads.
The CNW main and yard (now UP) here in Butler, WI always ran northbound traffic on the "Every other railroads" would be the southbound trackage and southbound in the northbound!

Nothing new to report yet. Wichman 401 Models Passenger cars are progressing. Should have finished painted/decaled bodies soon. I have to figure out the trucks then and window glazing. Nice set for an accurate Dakota 400 and additional cars for an accurate Twin Cities 400.
I have a line on a Unicorn. Has the potential to be something really special and unique if I can get my hands on it and pull it off. More to come on that later.

Was going to sell this vista but now just put LEDs and passengers in it and will add it to the latest MTH passenger cars. The bodies are aluminum but the roofs start as black plastic one piece parts and in certain light the green paint looks a lot darker than the side band.

I get confused between "Safety Yellow" and "Zito Yellow". Zito is the one you can see from orbit because it's so bright, but it faded to a white-yellow in about 18 months, but did they refer to that as Safety Yellow, or was it the school bus chrome yellow?
"Safety Yellow" was the official name of the 1980-1990 era yellow applied.
"Zito Yellow" was the railfan nickname.

Yes, that yellow does really fade, I took this in Toccoa, GA on 20aug2011:
That "J" SD in front, however, is a different story!
One of my favorite Weaver center-flows Is the C&NW version, I have about ten or so:
I also have a couple of the three-bay rib-sides.
LATE EDIT (16dec21): I am not sure as to why I thought that SOO was C&NW!

I have a batch of them. It looks like the CNW 4-bay ACF's were done by Weaver and Petersen in different numbers and slight logo variants, in yellow and green. When one pops up on eBay, I have to check to make sure I don't buy a duplicate. I've switched most of them over to Intermountain scale wheels and Kadee couplers. I also have a few of the 2-bay PS2's and PS4427 high-side 3-bay hoppers.
Atlas did two pairs of PS4427 low-sides for Petersen Supply in yellow and green. They also did a four-car release of Trainman PS-4750's in a one-off green -- a color which supposedly was done for a company, then cancelled, then picked up by CNW. Lionel released a nicely-done 3-pack in yellow, plus a single unit in green. All are on my list to be 2-railed.
I did a YouTube with 20 ATSF PS4427's pulled by a pair of C40-8W's. I realized I've collected so many CNW grain hoppers I can do the same thing, but never got around to taking everything down to the club to shoot it.
By the way, if you want an early intermodal, Lionel released a series of PS-4 flat cars with trailers that are fantastic. Hard to come by now as they sold out quickly. I've also planned to 2-rail these along with the Weaver 50-footers with the 35-foot single trailer.

The LIONEL SD40-2 has the 1970's era Original Yellow scheme.
Original Yellow has a bit of red mixed into the Yellow.
Andrew
I've seen "Original Yellow" referred to as "Stagecoach Yellow". It is such a great color; warm, tasteful and classy. I'm a UP fan but a clean CNW paint job trumps Armour Yellow every time. The last such comparison I made was 10 years ago, in the Powder River Basin, when I spotted one of the last class of CNW power mixed in with a bunch of UP power.
There's something particularly stirring about seeing your "home road" power, pulling hard for home, regardless of the passage of decades and intervening loyalties. *sigh*
Mr. Zito's rubber stamped signature is on my ancient Road Brakeman qualification cards but I never met the man. I'm sure he was an effective manager but his choice of colors leaves much to be desired, as far as I'm concerned. "Zito Yellow" is pale by comparison.
Great C&NW shots! Growing up in Glen Ellyn, IL in the 1970's and 1980's, I can remember the many C&NW freights and commuters running by.. Usually, the freights would run the GPs and SD40 locomotives and the E's and F's would pull the commuter runs. Although every once in awhile, there would be an E, F or even an FB runnning on a freight train which was always pretty neat.
A small contribution to this thread. GP38-2 and a caboose that came out of the collection of Bob Johnston who was a founding member of TCA Desert Division. More important than the trains themselves, I hold on to these as memories of someone who was a friend and an avid fan of the C&NW himself.
In a post dated 9/20/21, WITZ41 mentioned that a Williams 4-6-4 (in C&NW lettering) might be a good candidate to convert to a C&NW Pacific, but then included a picture of a Milwaukee Road Pacific below that comment. Chuck, I can see where it might be confusing, but the image of #601 is a C&NW Pacific, lettered for the Omaha Road or "C. ST.P, M. & O.RY" = Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha. The C&NW bought/controlled/absorbed the Omaha Road in 1882 and kept it a separate corporation until 1958.
The Pacific of the Omaha Road > C&NW were some very impressive engines that I would like to see modeled as well, but I suspect the interest would be too small for anyone (Lionel or 3rd Rail) to make a credible version, so Witz was just saying that the Williams Hudson, might make a good starting point for a C&NW Pacific stand in.
Hope that helps.

Hope that helps.

@PRR1950 posted:In a post dated 9/20/21, WITZ41 mentioned that a Williams 4-6-4 (in C&NW lettering) might be a good candidate to convert to a C&NW Pacific, but then included a picture of a Milwaukee Road Pacific below that comment. Just wondering if the comment meant MR Pacific, or if the wrong picture was attached?

Hi Chuck.
Charlie's good explanation aside, here's a wider photo for context.(Clearly not mine) from Lloyd A Keyser's wonderful book
'Chicago and North Western In Color, Volume 1: 1941-1953'

I have some models with "Line" and some with "System" in the herald. Also, I see a lot of photos with "Railway" in the herald. Does anyone know the time frame for these changes? It seems that "Line" may have been in use in the 1940's and 1950's and "System" came later?
