On30 2-truck shay gears upgrade

The Bachmann 2-truck Shay NWSL 2801-6 re-gear kit is no longer available (per NSWL). 2 questions please:

1. Is there another quality source for metal gears?

2. Was there a point at which Bachmann replaced the plastic gears with metal gears for this locomotive?

I purchased a used 2-truck Shay that needs the re-gear upgrade.

I would like to purchase 2 more Shays, but if they were all made with plastic gears, it doesn't make much sense to buy them if they can no longer be fixed.
