Gentlemen,
Its been quite some time sense I have been able to participate. My layout is DCS controlled and has many different kinds of original and Repro 0 gauge trains. Lionel, Weaver, Williams, and MTH all run on my FasTrack layout at the same time. The Lionel 263E Tin Plate original and the 263E MTH Repro, are amoung my most favoite train possessions. For those of you who are new to OGR the 263E was one of Lionels earliest 0 Gauge Trains, the 263E Work Train is very rare, few were actually made, mine was gven to my Father by my Grandfather at Christmas time when he was very young. During the WWII to keep moral high, just after taking Guadacanal, the Admiral in command of the 46th Seabees had my fathers 263E flown to Guadacanal for his men to watch as they ate Chrismas dinner, the Navy returned the train to my Grandfathers home during the war. My 263E is part of American history, I prize it greatly. I was lucky enough as a little boy to have a Father who worked for the Union Switch & Signal and Engineering life size Railroad equipment & electronics was his chosen profession.
Of course this led to Model Railroading in a big way, and may very well explain why I became a NASA
Professional Engineer. Professional Engineering is our family business and Model Railroading has played a big part in both my fathers career and mine. The next time someone says to you that model Railroading is just a kids toy, remember that a lot of us Professional Engineers, started our engineering careers by engineering layouts for Model Railroading. I can't explain it but there is something about Model Railroading the produces a highly disciplined Engineering mind.
My father once took a poll in his USS Engineering office to see how many of his Engineering friends
built Model Railroads as children, 96% of his engineering crew built layouts. I took the same
poll at NASA - (Martin Marietta), 98% of them had also built Model Railroads as young boys.
Unknowledgeable people may continue to call Model Railroading toys, me I know what it really is,
hands on education for Professional Engineers.

Norm,
You are so right, the Marines had a sign built on Guadacanal, it said when the Marines
roll into Japan it will be on the roads the 46th SeaBees have already built. My father was a
Master Chief UDT SeaBee Diver with the 46th SeaBee Batallion, the Marines called them the toughest men on earth, they later bacame the US Navy Seals. My Uncle Scotty who was a Marine SGT and my fathers best friend, he told me you could hear a pin drop as the men ate and watched that train run under their Christmas tree as the men ate, for some of those men it was the last memory of home they ever had. Old Tin Plate Trains mean more to some people than a man might think, especailly the men who fought the battle of Guadacanal, in both my uncles home, and my fathers there was always a Tin Plate Train that ran under the Christmas tree every year. During President Reagans time in the Whitehouse, a Standard Guage Tin Plate Silver Presidential Train ran in a big circle under the Foyer Christmas tree, that train belong to President Reagan, and he layed the tracks himself. Often late at night he would set and run his train, and pray for the men in harms way, that he commanded.
There is a lot of history to some of these Tin Plate Trains no doubt about it.

Some men from Pittsburgh that really knew their trains, with a 263E awaiting
work cars on the Office Layout. My buddy runs his trains with God now, and I miss him badly. New owners now at the Iron Horse outside of Pittsburgh, I have not been back, the memories are just to much. Got to admit our Train Cub was something special in those days.
I agree, that is a great story! I am currently an Engineer for Union Switch and Signal, now Ansaldo STS USA. I had my MTH 255E running in my cubicle this past Christmas and it was a big hit. It led to several of my co-workers buying train sets. I will have to take a similiar poll in the office to see if the percentage is still that high.

Ryan,
Thank you sir for continuing the old Union Switch and Signal tradition of running a Tin Plate train at Christmas time. Ask your older employees if they remember my father Bill Buehner, he retired as Chief Internal Auditor.
He worked for USS for 50 years and passed away on his 60th birthday, just after he submitted his retierment papers. His 1st birthday present form my Grandfather is one of our famlies treasured possessions. My brother has it on constant display in his home right now, in one of those fancy display cases. Ryan please let me know how the new poll turns out, I will be very interested.

PCRR, I thought that pic you posted was from the upstairs of the Iron Horse! I remember when I was kid and my Dad was helping Frank build that layout. I also have not been back to the Iron Horse since change of ownership.

That is quite the career your father had. I will ask around. I have the PS2.0 versions of tinplate and my fellow engineers were amazed that these models use similiar technology to what we put on our fullsize driverless metros. As to the the office poll; the numbers are high so far. I also asked who still does model railroading, either all year round or just at Christmas time.

Ryan,
If your father is still alive please tell him Dave from Franks Iron Horse Train Club says hello! I remember him from when we were younger and he was a real nice man who really liked trains.
I had some pictures of Eddy working on the office layout, I will see if I can find them, unfortunately they were on the old instamatic, God only knows were they went.
PCRR/Dave
I forgot that everyone down there called him Eddy. He is still very much alive and anxiously awaiting grand-children to share this hobby with. He started me in this hobby with postwar Lionel O-gauge and he is the person that started me with tinplate. He started collecting modern standard gauge and that led me to buying my first MTH O-gauge tinplate pieces. I am hoping he and I can build him a standard gauge layout at their house.
