With no layout temporarily , I wanted to find a way to take some photos of the new postwar stuff I got. I also figured that after reading a bunch of books on display layouts, I wanted to try my hand at it before I built my new layout based on a postwar display. Below is my result. I used some scrap wood I had laying around from the old layout.

It's 34'' x 12''
I painted a gray roadbed & when that dried, I masked it off & painted the base a green color. ( The green I picked is slightly different from ones I've seen - not sure if I like it) .

As the paint dried, I added a light mix of Woodland Scenics Grass & Earth blend ground cover. Trying to get the right mix to simulate the saw dust ground cover of those classic postwar displays.

I also wired it up so the 256, 445 & 153 all light up, using a postwar 1014 transformer, which is mounted on the back.

What do you guys think -

Chris,  I like your idea a lot!  Experimenting with small displays is an excellent way to practice your technique.  I wish I had done that.   I now have a postwar layout and I am trying to figure out how to enhance it without starting from scratch and rebuilding the whole thing.

And, your display looks great.  My one thought is your track bed.  I have a picture of Frank53's roadbed.  He used postwar track, O gauge and enhanced it, remarkably, by elevating the track and filling in the missing RR ties.  It looks outstanding.  I use O27 track with O42 curves and Gargrave switches.  I am thinking about doing the same thing.

I like it.  I too am getting interested in doing postwar now, it is neat stuff even though it isn't scale and looks more toy like.   I disagree with the track recommendations, leave it as it is if you are trying to replicate a postwar layout.  I find my own interests keep getting modified as I 'age' in this hobby.

The main thing is to do what you like and what gives you the most satisfaction. Good luck!

I have that special issue - what a good read!

I have always liked the D106, D132 & D131. I really thought hard about building those
