PS3 DCC Questions

DCC compatibility is standard on PS3 boards. RailKing units have it because it's a  standard part of the electronics, but few expect any 2-railers to have any interest in RK items. Supposedly the DCS/DCC switch is being left off of newer RailKing locomotives for that reason (you can still install one yourself though)

I couldn't tell you if the as-yet-to-be Proto 3/2-rail locos have insulated wheelsets--it could go either way (it could potentially be easier/cheaper to make them all insulated wheels and let the 3/2 capability sort it out). But if you were able to install proper 2-rail wheelsets upon them, then they should run as well under DCC as well as those factory-equipped for 3-rail/2-rail conversion.

My understanding from MTH is that the RK engines without the switch have an internal jumper that can be moved for use with DCC. It's not necessary to install a switch.

All PS3 engines are  capable of operating under both DCS and DCC.

Barry, that's what we were told when I was down at MTH, but it's not in the manual, you apparently have to call MTH and ask for instructions.

I know I am not a typical 2 railer. I would easily order and run the Imperial Camelback in the new catalog if it had or I could economically change the wheelsets over to 2 rail. These days a conversion of a locomotive with that many drivers costs around $300. I might as well wait for MTH to re-run the Premier Camelback. However, if I ever see one on the secondary market cheap enough it might be worth it.

As for diesels I like the NW2 and the RS-3. These wouldn't be as costly to convert. I realize they are not highly detailed but if I were to add a few details and maybe some weathering it might be a good deal and a fun project.
