If they are having a very limited production run of each tractor-trailer set, that might explain the high price.

This set turns out to be one of my last O-Gauge purchases, given my recent switch to Standard Gauge trains.  I pre-ordered this set years ago, since I'd been quietly collecting the scale PS-4 flatcars w/piggybacks over the years -- both individual cars and two-packs.  There are actually quite a few of these cars that Lionel had already produced BEFORE they offered this set -- making the set somewhat of a hot item right out of the gate.

Might be too early to tell for sure, but I'd grab this set quickly if you can find it.  I don't think it will be on shelves too long.  Already very few of the big website dealers list it.  It was off Charlie Ro's website for pre-ordering for the longest time, but has now reappeared since they received the set from Lionel.  Perhaps Charlie got a few extra sets, or some folks that pre-ordered the set years ago got tired of waiting and cancelled their pre-orders.  Either way, I wouldn't wait too long if you're on the fence.  The GP9 locomotive isn't the draw here... It will be the flatcars w/piggyback trailers for those collecting the entire series.

How does the tractor fit with the trailer and other cars?

Is it 1/50ish or 1/43ish?

Funny they have CP trailers on a CN flat car, that was very unlikely.

The trailers are very nicely detailed.

Agree would be nice to be able to order some add on trailer sets with flats these are really nice that Lionel Runs.

Umm, is it kinda weird that the white trailers in the above photos say "NATIONAL CANADIAN" instead of "CANADIAN NATIONAL?"

The catalog art has is correct or reverse of what is pictured here.

I still like the set and the PS-4's are suburb models.

If I remember correctly, you had a hand in bringing these to Market? If so, thank you. Like David stated above, I have all the issues of this car so far, and they make a spectacular train (for a freight train).

As a side note, if you attend the annual O Scale (March Meet) show in Chicago next month, you will see this car (some converted to two rail, some not) as these have been well received by the two rail crowd.

I also bought the set and a couple of the extra tractor-trailers to go with some of the first PS-4 flats back in 2005. What I did not realize until now is that some of the trailers have only rear opening doors and that some have 2 opening side doors along with the opening rear doors.

Stop it, guys!!!  I'm supposed to be budgeting my $$$ for Standard Gauge stuff these days... and now I may have to order some of these tractor-trailer jewels.  Life just ain't fair.

Ooops!!!  In the days when anyone cared (i.e., the pure collectors), we'd call this a factory error -- especially if Lionel produces a follow-on "extra" piece with the correctly sequenced "CANADIAN NATIONAL" trailers. 

I also noticed that one of the flatcars in Paul's pictures has the word CANADIAN spelled CANADIEN", which is also depicted on the set box that way as well.  Perhaps that's the French influence coming through?

If you want to build some of the trailers on your own the Berkshire Valley kits are nice and offer a few different trailers.
