Re: Red Paint on Door of Locomotive

I am doing modeling and note that the door leading from the engineer to the outside seems to have been always painted red. Was this a regulation, or just a preference? Is there a history behind this practice?

A few questions for clarity:

1) What type of locomotive are to referring to? Steam, Electric, diesel, trolly?

2) What specific railroad?

2) What time frame/era?
