Hello Forumites and Happy Switcher Saturday!

This is a weekly thread were we celebrate the smaller locomotives that help do the big work of railroading.  From diminutive gas powered machines and juice jacks, to small steamers handling the yard or the local run, to modern multi-purpose locos big enough to get the train over the road but still nimble enough to work the yard or the docks, Switchers are a fascinating group of machines.

Here at Switcher Saturday we take pride in being inclusive as all scales and gauges are always welcome.  The only thing we ask is that the photos or videos are yours or something you have permission to post here.

Our kick off image this weekend takes us to the extreme of specialization.  Brought to you courtesy of reddit user U/HjerterKnaegt, we have a gas powered machine nick-named "the Closet".  Built for the Danish state railways in 1931 for the purpose of being able to help steam locomotives on and off the turntable.

ivhj51g0yyr71[1]

And for something a bit more modern and US built, Here's a short clip of a Republic Locomotive works 4 wheel diesel in action, and remember there's no one in the cab, this is run by a remote control( Hmmm - sound familiar?)

20211001_094539

And as some of you may know, I also love LEGO.  There have been some amazing Lego trains built in the past few years, and my only regret is that "L" gauge track is slightly wide than O gauge track, so the Lego trains are not a drop fit onto O gauge rails.  In my head this is a pity, but I have built several O gague cars out of Lego.  My inspiration for these can usually be found on the website https://brickmodelrailroader.com/.

The real reason I bring this up today though is that I am excited about the annual OcTrainber challenge for 2021.  This year the them is "Critters". From their site "Loosely defined, a critter is a light-duty or industrial switching locomotive between 300 to 1000 h.p. weighing less than 100 tons, although most tip the scales at less than half that weight. "   That's right, they are having a building contest featuring Switchers as the subject matter.  Please check out the contest description here: https://brickmodelrailroader.c...inber-2021-critters/.  This should be fun to watch.  You will recognize several of the example pictures on their page.  Now if they would only make the wheel base a little narrower and ac powered....

Here's a screen shot from some instructions I purchased but never got the model built for

0-6-0 - Sticker Placement

And I hopper I built from plans using Lego for everything but the wheels/axles.  Brick Model Railroader sells Kadee coupler lego mounting boxes, so this can run with all the rest of my O gauge hoppers.  It looked even better when I got the decals on later.

20210126_192847

Anyway that's the opening message for me folks.  Everyone have a great weekend and please show of those amazing switchers and the amazing scenes you have created around them.

Yay SWSat is on track!

Great start as usual. Nice posts so far every one. This week my post is of a recent EBay winning. It goes along with the Lego theme only in that it is a bit of a brick.

It looks very close to their Plymouth in one end but it is a quite a bit different overall. Rivarossi had a history with Lionel developing the Scale Hudson. I have never seen one of these before. Thought some here may be interested in seeing it.

Have a good weekend. Can wait  to see what you post.

Happy SWSat!

Neat little critter Mr. Z. The LIRR had several almost as small at their Morris Park Facility in Richmond Hill. (pix here).

This week AT&SF # 2312 (K-line S2) is rolling into town with a local freight. After dropping several cars at the station, the crew checked in with the yard master Joe Davola.

2021-10-09 07.46.25

First job was to pick up a pair of empties from Team Track # 1 and drop them at one of the local businesses.

2021-10-09 07.46.53

2174 is assigned to this branch this week and will pick up the cars later after they are loaded.

The engine facility is on the same branch so the crew makes a brief stop for a maintenance visit, and tops off their fuel and sand, before heading back to the interchange.

The shop foreman Art VanDelay keeps watch over the activities

Thanks Mel that means a lot. I just had to  Train a new driver this week and it’s pretty in depth with Intermodal. I think next week will go back to normal. I slept in and I’m taking it easy this weekend. I appreciate it Mel.

Andy, I always liked the Rivarossi Plymouth, and now this little box cab.  I wonder how hard they would be to three rail?

@Melgar Very nice locomotives. I like that blue CNJ boxcar. I was just wondering is it a prototypical paint scheme or a fantasy paint scheme?

The blue CNJ #22485 boxcar is a Weaver Ultraline model. Seems prototypical to me. I don't think Weaver offered fantasy paint schemes, and the road number fits with other CNJ boxcars. I would not have bought a fantasy paint scheme.

Edit:

Boxcars CNJ #22485 and #25624 are Weaver Ultraline models. I believe that both are prototypical. I run them on my “New York area” freight train. CNJ #22485 is marked with a build date of February 1938. CNJ #25624 is marked as December 1947.

I followed the link and I see what you mean there Bob. I have a model of one of the Morris Park engine house goats. It fits in pretty well with the boxcab. I pulled it out for a double header.

@coach joe I somehow missed your question. My reply (besides you are going the wrong way 😉) is it should be easy with some rewiring and a slider pickup. The wheels are isolated on each side so running those pickup wire together and one to the slider and you should be good to go. The wheel treads will be narrower than 3 rail wheels but they are in gauge. Easier than 2 railing a 3 three rail engine.

Lee, with all the talk in the news about the trucker shortages, nice to hear that there are some new drivers entering the field.

Thanks for doing your part to keep freight moving.

Thanks Bob I really appreciate you noticing the Truckers hard work. Yeah but it’s very hard to find good drivers. This one I trained earlier in the week called out yesterday. Go figure people these days just don’t want to work and it’s cutting into my Train Time 😂

0B6838D4-9BCF-4C00-A3BB-560B6B42F3AFHappy Saturday everyone! This is the paint scheme that I have the earliest, fondest  memories of (Born in the 80s). Really grabbing my attention as a child and turning me into a “rail fan”. This is the first Lionel engine I have ever pre ordered. With the Cheesie System Scheme with CSX repaint, I had to! Awesome engine! Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks for the heads up Coach Joe!  Much appreciated  I posted late last night after a looooong day ... lol.  I made the correction of the road name ... not only that but I posted the wrong locomotive model as well last night ... it should have been SW1 not SW1000 which I also corrected.  Thanks again!

Looking amazing gang!

I do have a Lego related request.   Please check this out:

https://ideas.lego.com/project...be-8ce4-1a0e6c3c4e10

This is a Lego ideas submission for an official Lego Big Boy.  I know,  I know,  its the total opposite of a Switcher,  I just think it's cool.   If you think its cool too, please consider casting a supporting vote.   If an Ideas project hits 10,000 votes it gets a review by the lego designers and may be put into production.

I am also hoping some designs from the BMR OcTrainber competition make it to the ideas page as well.

Keep up the great stuff everyone,  this has been an amazing Switcher Saturday today!

Thanks for this photo.  While not SwSAT related, I have an Atlas PRR RS-1 that needs the steam generator mod shown here.  In 1948 the Pennsy bought only one equipped with this for commuter service (they bought 4 others in 1952 but that was beyond my layout era).  Now I just need to do the mod.  Until then my Atlas RS-1 is doing switcher duty.

You may be able to get parts from Atlas.  Most of my diesels are Atlas SW-9,  Atlas has supplied parts.  Steam generator stack, major part.  There does seem to be additional short hood detail related to the steam generator.  IMO, Mike CT.

TALES OF THE DOCKSIDER

Yesterday I tried and failed to post my first video, so “I went home mad”.  Not yet up to another try, I decided to post one of my favorite photos from the archives.

Some of you SwSat fans may remember it was the day shop switcher x-8688’s crew discovered the crew from a “foreign” railroad ain’t all bad.  I think it’s a lesson in tolerance and inclusiveness worth repeating.

John,

Not sure why you had a problem posting a video. The process I use is exactly the same as posting a photograph by selecting "add attachments" and then selecting the video file, which must be less than 100 MB. A video generally takes much longer than a photograph since the file size is likely much larger. When "uploading" reaches 100%, the dialog will change to "processing." When processing completes, the dialog will change to "success" and you can then check the small box at lower left and click on "update" or "post reply." You will then be returned to your "reply" but it may take several minutes until the video is available for viewing. Be patient.

Very nice video Arnold!! Fine looking model !!

Yes, the Maryland Midland is a short line basically serving Carroll County, Md.  It runs on parts of the former Western Maryland Railway, including a short stint of street running in downtown Westminster.  I believe the Maryland Midland came to be in existence around the time of the formation of the Chessie System, which is now CSX.   Chessie System was originally comprised of the B&O, C&O, and Western Maryland.  On lines which were duplicated, the CSX did away with one of the lines, and sold off trackage to smaller switching roads/ short lines where applicable.  This how Maryland Midland came to be ... I think at sometime in the 1970's.

As I model Maryland railroads basically from 1946 - 1960, I don't include the MM, however, their engines and rolling stock are certainly very enticing!!

MELGAR, thanks for taking the time to offer your advice on posting a video!  I believe I followed the steps exactly as you outlined, but got an odd result.

All of the video attachments I have seen look like a still photo of the first frame with a "play" arrow in the lower right corner.  My attachment (which took 15-20 minutes, you're right about that!) was basically a blank screen with an arrow in the middle.  I couldn't open it, so I assumed no one could and didn't post it.

Hopefully I won't be as frustrated next Sat and I'll try it again.  Thanks again!

John- when you upload a video directly in a post, it takes several minutes to fully upload and render into the page. Prior to that, the image you describe is what you see. Try again and give it some time. As long as your file is under 100MB in size, it should work.
I use my smart phone to shoot videos. They are produced in MP4 format. I believe most common formats are supported by the forum.
