Okay went to run some trains and no engines found hmmm.
so I did a read 1 tiu and so on no second tiu found strange.
now 2 days ago I had unplugged both tiu's aux power to verify both were set as tiu 1 and tiu 2 all was well.
so my doing this did I inadvertently create this error of not reading both tiu's?
What I did was unplugged tiu 1 and re added tiu 2 and poof all was working again as it should did I do something right?
and both show being in super tiu mode yet I have done nothing prior or after to reset them as being in super tiu mode as they were already setup months ago in super tiu mode this is baffling to me.

can anyone explain this to me?

and no Barry i do not have the holy grail book i get baffled enough just keeping tracks cleaned so it is happy no pun intended just a true statement.

How could you know that? One of the "quirks" of DCS is that there's no indicator to tell you this.

So, you don't know much about DCS and you would are happy to depend on others to answer your questions. This is instead of spending $12.95 to make yourself considerably more knowledgeable of DCS and less dependent on the expertise of others.

 

Do I understand you correctly? Would that seem to be a "true statement"?

It's a shame to see anyone leave the forum because they either didn't get the answer they wanted or got some answer they didn't like. I try to just ignore and move on, hoping someone will be kind enough to help.

 

As for the book, I bought it, but haven't opened it yet because I don't have a layout yet. Still, one should not have to buy a book, $12.95 or not, just to avoid answering questions and getting an answer here. Besides, I think it's kind of hard to buy Linn Westcott's book before asking questions about L-girder construction. Yeah, not quite the same, but the point is shouldn't we be allowed to ask questions and expect answers if folks have the answers? Obviously, there's more going on here.

I get that Jim, and I agree. I think it's kind of silly to spend the money on DCS and then not spend the $12.95 on the book, even if it is a little intimidating given the amount of info it contains. I also agree the comment from $oo seemed as if he were just daring Barry to say something.

 

That said, I would have tried to not get sucked in and that's why I think there's more to the story that just what we're seeing in this thread. I can't say enough about Barry's support here. Heck, he's even answered a few of my questions knowing I had the book and he didn't just tell me to RTFM. I don't know $oo, I just thought the thread took a bad turn and wanted to say something.

Yes, there most certainly is more going on than one might think.

 

I answer a lot of questions about DCS on the forum and have been doing so for the past 10+ years. I started out doing this because it was a way to "give back" to the forum by paying forward in return for what I learned from other forum members.

 

Later on, attar publishing the DCS O Gauge Companion in 2009, it was also a way to promote both DCS and the book. DCS because I think it's a really neat way to run a model railroad and the book because it's a way of "demystifying" DCS". The system is extremely content-rich and the manual that accompanies the system merely scratches the surface of what DCS can really do.

 

Anyone who thinks  that I do this to make a bunch of money needs to have a serious conversation with my accountant!  

 

As I stated above, I answer a lot of DCS questions. However, most people say thank you and mean it, and are generally quick to say that they either own my book or plan to purchase a copy. Most people "get" a couple of things about the book:

  • That there's a lot more info available in the book that might not surface in a forum thread Q&A
  • They can learn how to avoid common problems before they encounter them
  • That the book is both a tutorial to really learn DCS, as well as a reference guide.

My gripe with the OP is simple. I've been answering his DCS questions for at least a couple of years. That's no big deal. However, his reluctance to help himself by acquiring a copy of the book sounds as if the reason is that he's too busy (or lazy, take your choice) to take the time to learn a bit about DCS himself.

 

Regardless, he has no compunction about taking up other people's time to answer his questions.

 

Call me picky if you will. However, I find that somewhat rude.

I'm not going to get involved in this one, but often a simple question (that probably would be answered in the book) leads to a lengthy stimulating discussion that imparts new knowledge to us all. I'd hate to be deprived of hearing the questions that could have been answered by spending time with the book.

 

Often someone has the book and doesn't know enough about the subject to know where to look in it.  I recall xx years ago, when I got my first set, and knew absolutely nothing.  I've done a lot of reading and question asking since then.  But I can still sympathize with those who have a problem.

I own barrys book both revisions and i must say that it is very infromative and consise however I still come here to ask things that I do not understand and need Clarification on. Between Barry/ Marty Fitzhenry/GGG and others I get the information that I need

at the time that I need it.  I have been working on a Friends Railroad and implementing DCS to it. And I have used Barrys book the originial DCS Guide that came with the DCS system and the Forum to get this layout up and running. without these people and their information I would still be working in the dark trying to figure out what and how to do what I need to do when I need to do it to get it to work and these guys are the Guru's the beta testers and users and writers of the code that make this work.  We all need to be civil with one another and work around ones sensibilities to understand one another and not take what one says to heart when they may not mean how it is taken.  I have had circumstances where I have almost left the forum due to this same type of scrunity but I am still here and I like barry and the rest are giving back to those that are in need.

RJR, I get your point and agree. However, as Barry stated, he's been answering questions from the OP for years, so I can see why the snarky comment about not having the book hit a nerve. That's why I closed by saying I thought there was more to this story, and there is.
