The speed up is rather sudden but very brief.  It's as if it went into conventional for a split second.

Is this possibly being caused by loss of TMCC signal based on two outside rails possibly not being completely connected throughout the switch?  (Everything is Fastrack and 6 months old tops.)

Unless it's been upgraded, this engine has no cruise.  The reason for a speedup would be more track voltage.  Perhaps it gets a better connection on the other side of the switch and sees more track voltage?

In addition to the slight bend of the center rail what about dabbing the pins with this before putting the Fastrack together?

I'm guessing that would be a really bad idea!

Non-curing silicone compound used for electrical sealing, lubricating, protecting and insulating. Waterproofs electrical connections and components. Improves electrical performance in adverse weather conditions.

GRJ - Thanks from preventing that bad idea from actually taking off.  It appears that some bad connectivity may have been the root of the issue.  I was having a problem with a 1 3/8" straight (with the center rail jumpers) as well (separate post today).  I tried the suggesting on bending the center rail pin slightly and that did help some.  But your suggesting on that thread to sparingly squeeze the open ends where the pins go put me over the edge it seems.  Seems much better now.   And I avoided a trip to Menards to get dielectric grease.

I'd only gotten into Fastrack for my son's room layout about 6 months ago.  I had no idea it had "issues" like this.  I spent a lot of time cleaning it with Nevr-Dull based on positive mentions of that product here.  I also tried Simichrome polish but the Nevr-Dull was a lot easier to deal with.  I just went over it with a dry paper tower after getting the residue off to make sure I didn't leave "new" residue behind.  But then I rubbed the track with a cloth infused with WD40 to try to prevent future corrosion.   So after getting it good and clean and then getting the connections tight things are working!   My wife was getting very tired of waiting to put the tree in the center of this little railroad.

Assuming this is a Mopac RS11 given your forum name?

Seems like it's losing power through the switch and the Odyssey is trying to compensate for it.

Precisely!

Like I said, no speed control on this one, so there's no Odyssey to try to compensate.

All Lionel TMCC RS-11s have Odyssey, Including the first run of the NYC/D&H. The Sp and MP are the second run and have 4 pickup rollers.

Page 8 of the attached manual.  I thought I'd remembered this, but after the earlier comment I'd checked the side flap of the box and found no mention of Odyssey.   I also googled the part and even on Lionel's website http://www.lionel.com/products...diesel-4611-6-28522/ it doesn't mention anything about this unit having Odyssey.

Now that I've gone through the Fastrack and slightly bent the center pins and slightly squeezed the open rail ends it seems to be running fine.  After a few times of apparently losing and getting power back quickly and the momentary speed surge it seemed to "lose it's mind" and it wasn't responding to throttle commands.  It's lights would switch based on presses of the Cab2 direction button but rotating the red knob produced no movement.  I had to reset it twice during this time using the instructions in the attached manual before it went back to normal.

One aggravation that is part of normal (it's always done this) is that it's hit or miss whether I can get it to "power down" short of killing track power.  I press the RPM down buttons and then the center filled in circle (#5) on the Cab2.  I'll get the crew talk gibberish but the engine sounds never stop.  Other times this works.  Go figure.   But that's a very minor irritation I can live with.

Look at the first page of the manual, says right on the bottom.

Chris,

Thanks - yes that's why I mentioned page 8 - as it goes into detail on the Odyssey system.  I was pointing out that unless you remembered to pull out the manual it would be easy to miss this unit had Odyssey given it doesn't show on the Lionel website detail or even on the side of the box.

Given it has Odyssey, could it operate well in a lashup with more modern Legacy/Odyssey locomotives like the SD-70ACe?
