I'm currently working on transferring the control circuitry from a 30-1183-1 0-8-0 into the camelback I'm building on the carcass of a RK-1111LP 0-8-0.  (I got the whole PS2 loco on eBay for less than the cost of a PS2 upgrade kit, so it was a win for me.)

My question:  I didn't plan to open up the firebox door to make use of the firebox glow, and room is slightly tighter inside my new body than stock.  My concern is this: does the tach reader NEED that light bulb placed in a specific way for the reader to work, or does it need it at all?  If I just jam the bulb in anywhere back there will it still operate properly?

The PS2 tach reader is a self-contained chip with 2 windows on it.  One window shoots an infrared beam (invisible to the eye) at the striped-flywheel and the other window detects the reflections.

Incandescent bulbs emit a bit of infrared radiation, so if anything it might interfere with tach operation if placed next to the tach reader.
