New hobbyist here, thank you for the generosity of your knowledge! The engine in question is a Thomas beginner set, bluetooth connection, with the power supply running directly into the FastTrack without any indicators or controls. (Model # YD14120). The thing is, when I can get the engine to receive power from the track and connect to the bluetooth, I can play the whistle and speaker and bell, but as soon as I give it a command to go (forward or backward) it will engage, lurch, and then shut down completely. It disappears from the bluetooth connection.

I have disassembled the engine many times looking for obviously touching or frayed or broken wires, bad gear mesh, etc. but haven't been able to change a thing. It's a new set, so there isn't corrosion or buildup. When I first opened the engine, I did notice that a loop of the red wire going from the middle pickup wheels was visible from outside of the case, pinched in the lid.

If this sounds like an obviously diagnosable problem, I'd love to hear about what I ought to do next! I do have a ammeter/voltmeter but honestly I'm a not confident in using it.
