I believe they can based on what I've seen with the no-sound models. Innovative Train Technology (ittc.com) has a sound module for a mechanical reefer if you want to add sound to one. I was looking at going that route.
Yes, same car bodies. Sound was from TAS.
Mike and I went up to Northumberland when the tool was cut to check how to mount the circuit board in the car.

How does the shell separate from the floor? The only screws I see on the non-sound car are holding the trucks to the floor. Thank you, John in Lansing, ILL

If I understand your question—can I do a simple shell swap between cars?—the answer is basically no. These cars aren’t built with the typical one piece shell on floor assembly. The floor and car sides are molded in a single integral piece. The roof and end walls are similarly molded in a single piece that snaps on the door/side wall piece to form the body. There’s no separate floor and no screws. To change sounds between cars you’ll have to transplant the sound board (and pick up rollers) from the donor car to the recipient.

Thanks Rich for jumping in on this one. When i saw the question about how to disassemble the car I realized that there could be problems, even though its the same mold.
I should have thought ot that; I have a car apart on my workbench to consider redoing the sounds.

Matt, looks like an interesting project for a Lionel 57' reefer. Do you know the size of the boards?
About the lights and sounds synchronization. When the Red light is showing, there should be no sounds as the unit is not running. When the Green is showing, the diesel would be going full bore operating the cooling system. When the Amber is showing, the engine would be at idle and should not be as loud. Is that how it is suppose to work? I have an SFRC car which has the same sound level whether the Amber light or Green light is lit. Thanks, John
That is how it is supposed to work. The diesel sound was from Mike Reagan's Chevy Suburban and Rich Melvin made the MP3 files for me.
