Welcome to 2014 folks trust you all had a great festive season.

 

A quick question, I'm after a set of Weaver or Atlas Blomberg truck sideframes (or even unpowered trucks) for a rebuild project I'm working on. I've had a look around the web but haven't had any luck in finding any, where is the best place obtain a set of these from?

Hi Gents, thanks for responding, it's a SF GP30 project I'm working on and either style of truck will work. Had a look at P&D and they have a set but the price is a little steep for what I'm trying to achieve. I've contacted Vince to see what he has.

 

Thanks again, once the last of the detail parts I've already ordered turn up I'll post some pics.

Just be aware that there are two styles of Atlas Blomberg truck blocks.  The trucks for the gp's are for the China drive and have the hardware and gearing setup to mount motors directly to the trucks.  The trucks for the mp14dc's are designed to have a drive shaft from the single motor with worm gear and spur gears to the axles.  

 

I'm not 100% sure but I think the sideframes may be the same either way.  The difference would be in the mounting tab locations.

 

I'm always on the lookout for spare Blomberg trucks from the mp15dc's.  Unfortunately they seem to be rare, just like the diesel models themselves.

Hi Jim, thanks for the further info, it has driven me into the books. While I read somewhere that there Blomberg M trucks were fitted to the GP30, I cannot find any pictures to verify this. There are however lots showing the early and late Blomberg B Trucks the latter without the outer brakes.

 

In terms of installation, I'll just cut, drill and tap attachment brackets if I have to so that is not an issue. What I'd like to get hold of is a couple of Atlas or Weaver Blomberg truck sideframes but these are not available from either manufacturers that I can see. 

 

I'm playing with an MTH GP30 which has an interesting combination truck in having a 'boxy' journal on one end and a round journal on the other, I've not seen a single picture of this configuration. It is also about 6 mm too short and the wheel centres on the trucks is about 2mm too short. For what I want this is not too much of an issue. This loco will run around a 50ft by 20ft layout used at public displays as a dummy with a DCC sound decoder installed so a stand off appearance will do as a last resort.   

 

A solution may have come to hand, I'll keep you informed.

Concerning the differences in journal boxes on EMC/EMD diesel units, it primarily depends on the era you are trying to model. For example, early "F" units all came new with those "big square" looking "J-1" Hyatt roller bearing journal boxes. Some tine in the middle 1950s, EMD started using the JMRA "more round looking" Hyatt boxes, on new units. However, when the Locomotive Replacement Order, i.e. trade in an old FT, F2, F3, F7, etc., many GP20s, GP30s, GP35s, and GP40s, were delivered with the old "J-1 square box" style, as those came off traded in old units, then were complete remanufactured for use in the earlier Blomberg  two axle remanufactured truck assemblies. Thus, a "new" GP35, for example, could have FT type truck assemblies under it.
