Weaver GP-38 not working in TMCC

IMG_4590IMG_4591

I have a Weaver MEC GP38 (U7583-LP) Ultra Line locomotive. It runs fine in conventional mode but when I tested the TMCC using a Lionel TMCC set with the cab-1 remote, it worked momentarily then quit. It still works in conventional but not TMCC.

I have tried resetting using the code in the manual (43) but it does not respond. If I reset using "8", it resets the sound and the engine starts up and idles. After that the engine does not respond to any commands.

I opened up the body and reset the connections and noted no pinched wires. Here are photos of the boards. I have know idea what I am looking at here, but hopefully someone can help...

Top suspect for flaky command operation is the R2LC, consider swapping with a known good one and then reprogramming the engine and see if that helps.  Since it works in conventional, that seems to be the most likely.

However, let's try to narrow it down.

If you reprogram the ID, can you use AUX2 to toggle the lights or operate the couplers?  If not, that points to antenna or R2LC.  If all that works, and it doesn't move, I'd be looking at the cable between the motherboard and the DCDR (motor driver).  If you need a DCDR, I'll give you one, I have a few from upgrades that I'll likely never use.

Steve, thanks for the lead. If all else fails, that sounds like a good route to go. I am in northern NJ but I am willing to travel a bit!

John, I tried a reset using the 8 code again and the engine worked back and forth for a moment then quit. I did toggle the lights off with the aux2 button but they will not come back on. I did one function out of each coupler. If I do the system reset, the locomotive does nothing until I press the aux1 button. It starts up the sound, but nothing else functions. I don't have another R2LC, so I would consider buying one if I cannot get this one to work...

One additional symptom is that in conventional mode, the bell and horn buttons on my transformer are reversed. It I hook up the track leads to the opposite posts, the horn and bell work properly, but the leads are then wrong for TMCC function.

Well, unless you have an antenna issue connection, I'd suspect the R2LC.  The fact that the operation is flaky and the headlight doesn't work 100% leads me to believe that's the bad part.  Nothing else in the headlight circuit, and since it was on, it obviously isn't bad wiring.

One question however.  Does that unit have LED headlights?  Atlas had some engines with LED's and they didn't provide the load capacitors to trigger the lighting triacs.  The symptom was flaky headlight operation.

Can you borrow an R2LC from another locomotive for a test?

I have the headlights back on. They are not LED from what I can tell. I am back to the reset and nothing until I hit the Aux1 button...then loud sound and no other function except lights.

in the pictures I posted, which one is the R2LC board?

Thanks.

Andrew, good call, but I tried that route already. I was kind of suspect of sticker next to the switch, but it turn out right on mine.

John, is the one component you circled replaced or the entire assembly in the picture?

Okay, I am on the same page now. I unplugged the board, reinstalled it and did a reset. It work for a moment, working the couplers and horn and slight movement, then it quit...

a new board will be in order I suppose. I looked up various replacements and there are different "codes". Is there a way to tell what code I need?

Well, the R2LC board arrived from Lionel in two days! I installed the new board and programmed the engine for its ID number. The headlight flashed and the horn sounded. Much more activity than before.

I set the engine to "run" and it started right up. All functions now work and the engine runs back and forth like it should. Repair is successful!

Thanks to John for steering me in the right direction as to the solution to my issue!
