It shouldn't be that difficult, many of them are only a handful of screws.  I've taken many brass locomotives apart,   I have that model here that I'm going to upgrade, looks like two screws next to the tether connection and the one large one under the front pilot truck is all you need to take out.  There's a plug that you'll have to unplug for the headlight and smoke.  The boiler front is just press fit, you just pull it off.
