I am a big fan of Woodland Scenics' O scale structures and hope they offer several new structures in 2014.  Structures on my personal wish list include:

  • 2 door 2 story brick firehouse
  • downtown movie theater - (a little more understated than the gaudy Walthers/AtlasO theater and larger than the Ameri-town one
  • mid sized white clapboard church
  •  freight station
  •  mid sized brick passenger station
  • a 2 track coal tipple

What would you like to see them do?

I, too, am hoping for a nice small church.  I would also like to see a nice fire station similar to the one Lionel issued about ten years ago that is impossible to find.  Upon reviewing the HO buildings on WS website,  the smaller ones like Tucker Bros. machine shop and Ricky's tavern would fit nicely in a small space.  Others from the HO offerings would be Our House (smaller Victorian house) and a smaller version of the Rustic Barn.

I do hope they will continue with new offerings.

Happy railroading,

Don

A nice, large movie theater, perhaps 12" wide. It should have a marquee with chace lights and lights underneath leading into the lobby. The buyer should be able to customize the movie titles on the marquee to fit the era of the layout.

Movie posters (real size 27" by 40") should be on display and lighted within frames on the front of the building.

The roof should have a wood water tank and other details.

   Don't forget a ticket booth.

Movie theaters were an important of small, medium and large towns for most of the 20th century and a detailed Woodland Scenics model would fit most model train towns.

Erie, not Eerie

I agree make some of the successful HO models into O.

Other things I would purchase are: 1.a railroad hotel, two stories high by about twenty inches long, maybe have a restaurant and bar, little on the seedy side, a place for rail crews to rest before the next run. 2. A small cotton gin, idealy one with a stationary steam engine, wood sides with rusty sheet metal roof. Every small town had one of these where cotton was formed into bales and shipped out on a train. Maybe use the cotton gin in Tifton, Georgia's Agrarama as a prototype.

This topic should not be limited to Woodland Scenics but should include all suppliers who manufacture scale model buildings.

I recently bought the Ethyl's gas station, it's a really good structure, but I had to remove the entire side with the lift as well as much of the detail parts along the outside as I model the WW2 era and a lot of that stuff is postwar. And the signs were pretty lame, I wish they'd had those as stick-on the owner can put on if they want...

But what would I buy if they made it in O scale?

  • Realistic backwoods barn.
  • Shortline depot.
  • Water tower that doesn't look like Lionel made it
  • Simple farm house, almost nobody makes a rural, backwoods single-level farm house in O scale!

I sent a link to this thread to the marketing folks at Woodland Scenics and got a very nice note back in reply.  They provided no hints of what's coming next but are following our comments.  Given contracting and tooling lead times I'd bet the 2014 offerings are already set.  As I recall the 2013 buildings were announced around July and some were delivered in September/October. Even if we miss influencing decisions on what to build for 2014, perhaps we're influence 2015's offerings.

Our layout town is versitle in that we can change out buildings as long as they are in 40-50 era.  We are always on the lookout for realistic detailed Woodland Scenic types with a small footprint to give a sense of alot in small space.  Woodland Scenics from Menards are nice, I just paint out the Menards stuff to make it generic.

Actually, I'd like to see Woodland Scenics make all of the detail parts available for separate sale.  Now THAT'S a goldmine.

I would agree to this and also stand in line for the parts. GREAT idea.

A clapboard church...like their HO offering BR5041.

A brick church.

A stone church.

Actually....any church.

------------

A pawnshop...with the usual assortment of equipment, thingies, sitting out front, along the side.

A pharmacy...to attach Miller's nifty Rexall sign to!

A replication of the building/diner featured in Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" painting, a model of which was done by the late John Armstrong, and is now being discussed in a separate thread on the Scenery/Structures forum.

A park scene...something about 1 foot square, or thereabouts, with trees, flowers, pathway, statue or fountain/pool, benches, people/pets, fencing, flag, lights, etc.....that could be a central celebration point in our towns.  It would make excellent use of all the W/S scenery materials!!

A new station based on the "Tomahawk" station on the B&M railroad, featured in a 1961 issue of MR, and now available as a pricey laser kit from Grizzley Mountain Engineering.

A small restaurant/boathouse...wharf, piers, nautical doo-dads, seagulls/poop (the avian version of the cow pies in their Hereford packs!), fishy fishies, nets, tables/chairs, diners, salty dogs, etc..

Well, hey, you asked!

However, I'm sure whatever they choose, it'll be a knockout, hot seller, and must-have.

I like both of these, but the top one would be seriously impractical for most people and especially as a pre-built building.

The second one has serious potential as a seller, especially among the NG types. If WS made one of these as a pre-built, I'd buy it for sure!
