you are right Ted, the inspector caught that also. here she comes with the new plans....

Why Ted, that looks perfectly safe!!
Brian, is the wall section you uncovered that has a silvery-gray material, actually garage doors you covered with insulation? Yes, I can see where pup decided to get into the act with demolition of his/her own!! It's all looking good; but I get tired just looking at your rapid fire hard work. Yes, I know demolition is quick, but your construction is quick too!
Paul,
I think those are good choices for downtown building kits. Small downtown buildings add more interest on our compacted downtown spaces!!
hello Mike, here is a rough drawing plan and video simulation on track plan...
yellow area is the walkway.....
3 main levels.... roughly a 1% grade will connect the 3 levels....
example of what I am thinking....
hello Mark, the 2 silver areas and the next one down where the train shelves are getting removed in spring for a 12'x30' addition......loop shown in red....
Okay, Brian; Now I get it!! Thank you for the answer!!
That's very cool Brian! Thank you for sharing, now I can see where your going! Looks like its going to be fun!
Randy at Downtown Deco ran this special so I decided to order it last week and it came today. It has a nice small foot print for my lower level. I already have the spot picked out for it. Pic...........Paul
Well I decided to open up the package and start putting this building together. It has been a long time since I worked from directions. I am using Elmer's wood glue so it is going to take some time to set up. ..Pics.........Paul
From the pictures it looks like a pharmacy! LOL

I was up until 3:30 this morning running trains. So I guess I did do something on the layout today!
Tom, like the new vignette. Well done!

Hello Bo....missed you on some of the other sites. Thought you may have stopped modeling. Going to check out your website to hopefully catch up on the MARS!
I saw railhead53's post, but didn't check out the link to bostrains.com. Now I see it is my old friend from FaceBook Bo!! I am with Howard, I miss seeing what you are doing on FB, but now I have the link to the website and know who you are with your OGR alias!!! I'm glad to see you here, Bo!!!
Howard, You never cease to put up wonderful shots of your wonderful railroad!! Those billboard reefers are the best!!!
So what did I do on the layout yesterday? I was off work yesterday and today; being semi-retired, I was cut from 5 days to 3 days a week for a while. I feel a bit more semi-retired now. I couldn't clean up leaves yesterday because of the rain, I cleaned up the train room a bit to make room for lumber. Yes, lumber!! I boxed up all my buildings saved for the new layout and put them in the attic, since the summer heat is over.
By afternoon, the rain had stopped, and since I had enough natural light, I cut off the breaker and wired in my two track lights. It wasn't too bad, since fortunately the positions I wanted them in were between the same two joists as the main light. I didn't want to put them on a separate switch, and I can add the dimmer switch later. Between getting my cataracts removes, and the two track lights and main light, all LED lighting, I am almost blinded when I go in the room. Therefore, I think that will be enough light once I position the track lights effectively.
Looks good Mark, the room is nice a tidy and the track lighting looks to be nice a bright! Great Job! I noticed your working on an engine on you work bench, what is it and what's wrong? People want to know. LOL
ran some trains......
met with the inspector......
cleaned and painted.......
now I have to get this side cleaned up.......
Looks good Brian, I bet the inspector is also happy! I have 2 questions for you. What is the height of your layout levels? and what is the framing under the saw horses for?
Mike, that is framing started for the lower level of the layout......will be approx. 12'x30'
it will be a a large reverse loop with yard tracks....trains will start here, then climb about 900' of track at a 1% grade to the top level.... the mainline is basically a giant helix.....
WOW that is going to be impressive! Can't wait to see it come along!

Mike, Thank you! I try to keep things neat. I'm a bit OCD, I guess. The engine on the workbench is an MTH ProtoSound BL2, Western Maryland. I am in the process of upgrading it to PS-3. I'm dusting off some of my bench technician skills from earlier in my working days. Now I just stare at a computer screen all day! Keep your fingers crossed on the upgrade!
I'm with Mike on the inspector's attitude! I don't see any REJECT stamps in his paw, so things must be going okay!! I'm also with Mike on the job you are doing. Looking good! You are an inspiration for me to get my benchwork going too!
Good luck with it Mark! Keep us posted!

Not much layout work lately beyond looking at it. Kinda hit one of those dry spells that guys mention on here occasionally.
On the bright side it was sunny and 70 deg on LI yesterday so a round of golf was in order.
Ran into this little guy on the course. Unusual for central Nassau County to see deer. We are only 20 miles from NYC.

Mark, you are off to a good start and before you know you will have a table in place. And now with work cut down you have a bit more time during the week to work on the layout. I hear ya. I have been retired for a number of years now and some days I think I am at work again because sometimes other pressing matters have to be taken care of first. Today I got a late start at relaxing ( doing something on or for the layout ) but I had to get the grocery shopping out of the way and then a quick run to Home Depot to get a few things. Like Flat white paint to do the deco building, double faced tape for the building flats, I learned that the glue dots don't work, and some more box knives for cutting black foam. So now I am waiting for the paint to dry so I can bring the building back in the house. Pics......Paul

Thank you, Paul! Yes, I just got in from mowing some grass and trying to blow some leaves into a pile. However, it got too windy to make any more headway. Yesterday it was raining.
Looks like you got a good handle on that deco building.

Yes, I have been a foamer for a long time. Back when we lived in Virginia from 1985 to 93, there were so many constructions jobs going on, that scraps blew out of trucks, and I was able to pick up all the blue and pink foam I needed. The price certainly has gone up! Actually the room looks brighter even at night than my smart phone camera showed.
Started track work on the upper leve; of the layout . The Curves are Gargraves preformed O89 diameter. Set out the track and adjusted to try and get the curvature of the track as preformed. Pretty close to the 089 curve. Depending on the joints as the sections are mated, you can get a minor variation . It should be fine for the Atlas California Zephyr which I plan to run on that level.
Tommorrow a bit more tweaking and lay out the cork roadbed and maybe secure the track on the rioaadbed.
looking forward to seeing this train run up there.
TrainroomGary, You sure have the layout at the perfect height for them. Wonderful. Their "body-English" speaks volumes, doesn't it. FrankM

Looks good Paul! but wouldn't it dry faster in the house! LOL
MIKE G, I figure I would take advantage of the nice windy day outside to air dry it faster LOL. So while doing laundry I got some diluted yellow ochre and started applying it to the walls. Waiting for that to sink in a bit I got out the Lionel 4 bay wood chip hoppers I just got to change out the loads. I put in ones from Don Kane. Then I went back and applied a second coat leaving open spots where mortar will go as a patch. I'll let that dry overnight and see what I have in the morning. This has been a new learning curve for me. I think the next building I am just going to spray each wall once instead of twice as I did with this building. Tomorrow it is off to a train show in Kirkland Ohio. It is basically a two rail show but I may find something nice that I can convert to three rail. Pics...............Paul
Paul,
Don's loads are always nice. The building is looking more complete already.
Have a good time at Kirtland!!
Looks great, Anthony!
Today, after walking my two miles, I got really fired-up to get the whole shebang ready for inviting quests in for the Holidays, which can include seeing the layout, if they wish it.
So, first thing on the list, for today, was making certain everything ran like clockwork. I ran all ten trains and the trolley. I had to make sure that the two MTH trains, which are not part of my TMCC system, were ready and not about to punish me with the dreaded "clang-of-death," which, thankfully, did not happen, especially considering I had not run trains for several months.
My next move was to begin dusting the entire layout by starting with this newer section of the layout, which is the area removed from the garage and added to the basement, some years ago.....
The ZW bank is situated where the garage now ends and the basement-devoted layout room begins, when approached from the in-ground garage, via this door on the left.
I even turned on all the in-structure lights to make sure the glow was going to be as I designed it. All was well (though somehow never enough!)
I must admit, especially since I did not have to mount the layout to rescue the MTH engines from having been clanged to death and rendered useless, that I had a good old time of it all, getting my imagination into it all once again and looking forward to The Holidays and sharing my trains - excuse me, our trains - my wife's and mine, and very happily so, with friends and relatives.
P.S. The two hi-chairs are for children to move around and sit or stand upon to see better into the layout.
FrankM, Moon Township, USA (It'll take me all of November to get all the decorations in-place and ready for decorating the rest of the house for Christmas. Then, I'll dust the remainder of the layout one last time, and be ready to roll.
Frank, I am glad you did not hear the clang of death! That is always so discouraging!
Moonson - Frank - your layout never ceases to entertain and inspire me!! Your work is a wonderfully authentic contribution to our fine hobby! Thanks for always being willing to share your artistic talents!
Upon arriving home from work Friday, I ran trains for about 40 minutes and totally enjoyed every moment! Nothing like finishing a week's work and coming home to train on a fall Friday evening! WOW!!
My latest creation:
I was asked to see if I could get a Harbor Freight klaxon to work for sound effects for my audio theater group. Quick answer: Not without a full size car battery. So, I decided to scrounge...
The Klaxon has been gutted and bolted to the hard case, and now contains a speaker from an old "Sounds of Steam" tender. Inside the hard case: The board from a Lionel diesel sound shack. The #90 switch controls the sound, and has a couple feet of wire so that the horn can be placed remotely if desired. After I took this pic, I put velcro on the switch to attach it to the hard case.
Should be fun showing this to the theater group!

Trumptrain and Frank....thank you!
My wife is a quilter, so I added this Lemax quilt shop to the layout as an homage to her considerable skill. Probably won’t get me a legacy engine, but maybe a few cars...
Not to much work on the layout, but do run trains everyday for about an hour while I do my PT to get my shoulder back in order. Usually run five trains on my single track loop to loop. My Z-Stuff grade crossing gates get a real workout. amazing they still work after ten years.

I hacked and.cobbled on a second track worthy VW today (for tow anyhow).
Not a Bus, but a panel van. A diffrent toy maker and also representing a slightly earlier VW vintage. Except that the sliding door should be two hinged doors . Maybe a tiny bit larger scale. It is ⅛-¼" taller than the red/white Bus.
Once it was rolling, the palm tree graphics package was wet sanded off with 400 or 600 wet/dry paper (? ). I was hoping the paint would be thick enough to polish out again, but white primer is bled through already, so who knows, maybe a repaint; maybe just a clear coat, then weathiring. I'll clean up sanding corners and edges at my leisure while I decide.
I used plastic MPC wheels and axles this time because the flanges are so tall that I now know any metal wheel set will fit later. Being very black, they look good on this in a side view imo. Sits slightly lower in the rear..bingo.
I also ground for the wider flange thickness of the fat, blunt, wheelsets. The top center of the wheel tubs were open up too. The passenger side's front flange encroached into the sliding cargo door track, but it cant overclose, so the gap doesnt matter. The lower arm of the door also had to be trimmed. The boss area of a guide pin had to be reduced to match the pins O.D...It rubbed the flange with the cargo door closed.
The front needed the most grinding. A brown dremel stone disk, maybe (½" dia?) was near perfect for flange clearance. The front also needed the plastic "trough"/ axle bearing both shotened/ narrowed and opened about 1/32" for the Lionel needle tip axle.
The rear was simple! Popped the pullback spring motor out of it's snaps, gound off a1/32" from the rear of the wheel well mudflap area and reassmbled it with the other MPC set.
This will be the easy one to power eventually; level frame, removable interior, room for hacking gear holes with no significant weakening, etc.. I think all I need is an ho driveshaft to put my last scap HO motor in action here and I think I have a toy motor & worm gear set too.
Looking at the pullback gearbox, I'm thinking about trying to mount wheels right on the toy gearbox for the next one.....yea, there are at least 2-4 more I have plans for, depending on how the different power trains that I'm thinking of work out.
?? Now , what jobs to give them ?? My favs so far, in order after.the taxi which might end up a firetruck, I hadn't thought of yellow but I cant recall a "V dub" "squirt gun" done in yellow.
With windows, the Micro Bus will be an ambulance...or "RESUCUE"?
I think this design is more period (50s-early 60s)
But where do I find decending point type cheap?...I dont. And my hand lettering isnt good enough anymre. So below with dry tranfers or old 1:24 model decals is more likely.
I'm wondering if I could find similar small enough to fit from a brotherhood or association?

Adriatic, Great looking work there, I cant wait to see them running down the track! But as you stated I do like the red ones, and the none with the flames maybe alittle much I think its really cool!

Hi Brian, you tell me the height of the 3 levels on your layout? Your layout looks great ! Art
Brian, you sure are moving thing right , then Left, its making my head spin how you get so much done in such little time! You keep going and I will keep watching! LOL Love your pace!
Made good progress on the engine yard and fuel depot yesterday. Painted the board, ballasted the track and set the old tanker in place.
Before I did this I split up the track power into two blocks so that I can park a train on the short section after the turnout. I discovered that the center rail on the turnout was dead since I isolated it from the joining track, so I had to add a jumper to the center rail. Not the first time these 5121 switches have done that.
I used grass paper under the elevated track for now. Too tight to try and paint around the base of each trestle. The rest is going to get covered with gravel so I can blend it in.
I found this guy laying down on the job this morning so he was fired!
Now the bad news- while I was taking these pictures I hit my 060 Docksider with my elbow and it took a swan dive to the floor. Now it won't run. Must have bent something on the drivers.
I like the way the tank is supported a lot.
I don't like "black swan dives" by engines either, even if it isn't mine. I'm pulling for you with some fingers crossed
katy409 posted:Hi Brian, you tell me the height of the 3 levels on your layout? Your layout looks great ! Art
thanks Art !
there are three main levels, the floor level started, 2nd level 30" to 40", then the
3rd level is 74" to 76" high, with stairs up to the 3rd level.....
kind of a mushroom type layout......
trains will run on a 1% grade from the floor level to the upper level on about 900' of track
shooting for something like this eventually.....
with an upper level......
stairs to the upper level....
the upper level......

Thank you Sir! Worked out perfectly. I had a post war gondola with electro-couplers that kept opening on a switch. When I bought the tanker for this project I was able to swap the trucks on the gondola.
Yea- I'm bummed to say the least. Mad at myself for not being more careful too . First time for a swan dive, had to be one of my favorites !

lunchtime train break....
Almost done! Just gotta add an inner track.
It appears that my Lionel 060 "Tank" engine is built like one. Nothing more than a dislodged bell and a small chip on the roof. The fireman took a bit of a spill too but he has been firmly placed back in his seat .
It must have landed perfectly flat on one side. Not even a bent grab bar.

Today I put two washes on the building. Raw umber and diluted black wash. I'll see tomorrow if I want to play with it some more. I have another small building to work with and I think I'll just try one quick swipe of spray white on the sides. Pics of this one so far................Paul

Hey Mike, I tried to feed my thumb and index finger to two fighting dogs about three years ago and have only had a "real" thumbnail back for about a year. You should have seen the guilty parties face when he realised he had bit me. It ended the fight with wimpers on both sides. ("daddy dog" Bruno has moved away since then )
You know you shouldn't tempt me like that Bob; I'm very impressionable
Hey, only slighty of off scale. But the length is a killer. Maybe a slot car motor mounted vertically?
Here is the Bus next to a trolly..not too bad eh?
This is a little large for conversion but very tempting also. I had a couple of these in real life too. One was like this, the other a window van (retired rural Texas school bus with 700k). It was painted green candy on metalic turquoise, and a metalic gold striped for the two tone. Can ylu wrap your head around that color bomb Think of an Eddie Bauer Edition as an early 70s candy metallic hot rod. At first you hated it, but a half hour later you loved it. I was always tempted to give it a Warbonnet.
Cool ! How many of these neat vans do you have?
Mike
Interesting day, was able to cut another access panel on the layout and redirected some wire with that new hole, but finished the night mopping the basement because of the rain. Oh well, nothing harmed, just a small mess that needed to be cleaned up anyways. Once I get it cleaned up , getting the two Menards buildings connected to a power source is a must.

I'm only sure I'm not owner of close to a thousand VW toys anymore. Maybe 10 vans I could convert and another ten or twenty here and there?
My Mom junked my first car a week before I got my licence; a 64½ Formula S Cuda with a new racing motor in it; thinking it was my Dads. My Step-dad felt bad. He won my first bug in a poker game at Fords, and said "Here's a car kid". I didn't realise till much later it had a hot stroker motor. I couldn't understand why folks thought they were slow because at a light, 0-40mph, not much could touch me ( after tuning, 2 losses light to light, turbo corvair and 6cyl. 914 {a 911 motor in a smaller car}). After that I was the VW guy, and deals and toy gifts just got thrown my way left and right. I had lots of VW toys as a kid, including the rarest, the 1st year Beach Bomb Hot Wheel. But I never intended to be the VW guy. I still have some of those here too, but i.e., the VW hobby picked me, not visa versa.
Here is about 2/3 of whats left. Maybe 150-200 total? Thats nothing in my family. Gramps had more O locos than this, let alone cars. I kept my fav.s not the real valuable ones.
My fav model is in the flash spot there. The seat folds into a bed, gauges have needles painted, etc.. The race watching platform for the roof is a barrel loading dock on the layout today.
....only 1/3 or 5 cars total are not VWs below. Toy Chev, & Caddy, Euro Ford Delivery, Tootsie Toy- Lincoln, & Scooby Van. All gifts here with a memory except the yellow bug
Thanks for the compliments Mike. This is or was my first plaster building. Trial and error LOL. I got some good help from JDADDY on how to do the rest of them. I went to the train show to look. Learned you never know what you will find or not. It was a two rail show. You are right I am hooked on the Weaver and Lionel wood chip hoppers. I have to get more black foam board to mount the buildings. Maybe this week............Paul
painted more shelves....
took down more shelves......
c'mon, let's play with some trains......
Cleaned up the result of an over zealous Springer Spaniel trucking through the layout. Certainly could have been worse.
Brian, things are looking good, but I think the inspector has a little to much power over you! Didn't seam like it took you to long from work to play with trains as soon as he said! LOL
Paul, your building is coming right along, looks very nice for your first one! keep us posted on how it goes!
Adriatic, what if you put a small Lionel engine in your van, you know like from an old steam engine? Just a thought.

Yeah, you’re right, about three seconds... She’s a pretty good girl, 14 now. Slowing down quite a bit, but still enjoying life.
It's no worse than what Norma gets up to...
I had to get my last dog "Lacy" her own trains to play with.....
she knew when I turned the transformers on......
she used to chase the trains from room to room when I was running them....
I didn't do it........
Cute pup.... maybe that is some benchwork incentive.....
