Yes, I had a few trains hidden behind the snow hill and backdrop!
So far today I just ran trains in the attic. I had switched out engines to entertain the group but bad weather canceled that. Upper mainlines I have the Lionel Legacy 4 unit FA's pulling the autoracks on the outside and on the inside track I have the wife's L & N fantasy passenger set running. On the lower mainlines on the outer track iss the Lionel Legacy Niagara pulling the Weaver TOFC flat cars and on the inner track I have my Canadian Club PGE RS-3 pulling a bunch of Crown model and Weaver box cars and reefers. Pics..............Paul 2
Paul, Good day to run trains! They look great on the attic layout!!
I just finished gluing people into the "Pine Gorge" Sleeper from the 1927010 4-pack. My biggest fan, Mom, looks at the finished car. Now we are ready for some football on TV.
The Pine Gorge is the 8th car of 9 Santa Fe 21" passenger cars. I skipped putting people in the 7th car, the Observation until this afternoon. The people are ready and I will break to work at half-time and after the game.
Have a good day.
Sincerely, John Rowlen
Same thing as yesterday with a little more progress on the basement floor and started gluing all sections together, they are all pinned which took a lot of time but is paying off now as everything fits perfectly.
The last two days, I've been busy with a bunch of detail stuff. I took a couple of coaches I bought it a show for next to nothing, Christmas patterns, and turn them both into Maintenance of Way cars. I didn't really need them, and I probably won't use them in any op sessions, but I just wanted to mess around with them because I had almost no money in them.
Take a look at the soda bottles in the pallet, each was an individual piece. That took quite a while to get those together...
That is a lot of intricate detail in that scene, Lee, not counting the individual pop bottles! Excellent job!
P51 great video, very realistic
mike g. posted:RSJB18 posted:mike g. posted:As for me I did nothing, but went to the train show yesterday. I was able to pic up 8-10 gondolas and 1 switcher for $200, I needed them for my scrap yard area and I didn't have any in my collection. They are a bunch of different road names which I will have to change down the road, And the switcher is a New Haven switcher that will one day get either a BN or BNSF repaint. I will post pictures later in Buy anything cool lately!
I hope you all have a great day with your train and layout! I will be working on the house again! LOL
REPAINT A NEW HAVEN????????
OH THE HUE MANATEE!!!😲
Heresy, sir... heresy!!!
(Though not as bad as the pink GG1...)
Forward Progress
I went back to the 7th Santa Fe 21" passenger car, the Observation Lounge. Work was slow and tedious as I had to do more grinding to fit the figures at and under the table tops. The figures are sandwiched between the seat and underside of the table. The Sleepers went quickly earlier today with grinding on the backsides only, but the Observation brought progress to a crawl.
The seated people with wide hips have to sit on the benches. Only the smaller figures can easily fit in the many narrow chairs in the rear of the Observation.
I plan to call Lionel parts and see if the earlier Bar from the NYC ESE Observation is available. I am tired from re-inventing the wheel and creating interiors that should have been included in the car.
This is where I stop for today. Three of the four Lounge Tables are done and some larger figures are seated on the bench/sofas. My creativity has disappeared and sleep is calling me.
Have a good week.
Sincerely, John Rowlen

Bob, good news! You don't have to worry there will be no painting of the New Haven switcher! Forum Member Briansilvermustang has offered to trade me a MTH PS2 BNSF switcher for the New Haven switcher!
Don, Nice find! There were a lot of things I was looking for but ended up with what I got. I wish we could have met up at the train show. I couldn't find Lee AKA P51 while I was there, just so many people.
Sam, Great set of Rules! LOL
Mark, looks good. Now your just like Paul, a clean slate just waiting to get messed up again with the build!
Paul, Looks like a good time! You know you cant spend all your time building! Everyone should take some time to just sit back and run trains now and then!
John, Looking great! I hope you and your mom had fun watching football! So just wondering what's next when your all done with the Santa Fe Passenger cars?
Ray, Looks great just like yesterday!
Lew, Looks like a great idea that should work well! Makes me want to hook up the motor system I build for my crane. I hope you will post more photo's and maybe a video!
Lee, Your attention to detail is just AMAZING! Nice little video also! Sorry I didn't find you at the train show, there were just so many people and not enough time!
Well yesterday I busted my butt working on our bathroom remodel and that's about it! But the CEO said I should take today off and do something fun, so train room here I come. First this is to put new traction tires on the New Haven switcher, then whatever I want. I am not sure but have a few ideas of what I am going to try and get done. I will post later!

Mike, you are absolutely right except I need to clear off some space in the other room to find the tools and materials.
Wow, everyone’s really making progress, scenic detailing, adding freight, spicing up their rolling stock, improving older accessories, fantastic thinking... Saturday,I rearranged my MTH Stations For easier viewing as these are operating accessories. The people actually board the train, the merchandise actually gets loaded on to the trains and I’m going for realism, ha,ha. It’s all in the fun of the game. I’ve decided to wire them via the actual controller, it’s simpler. Mite G., I hope you get some train time in soon, Geysergazer Lew, great idea working on the gantry crane and keep us posted, P51 Lee, great pictures, awesome detailing, very interesting, Briansilvermustang, your the man, trains everywhere, your trains are always fun to view. SIDEHACK, Great Modeling, neat layout, more pictures. Paul 2, I like that Canadian Pacific ABBA, and the layout, wow., Mark Boyce m great pictures and I love the hi level railroad, so cool, also your table top layout looks great, wow, and now that the NFL Playoffs are close to an end, the Super Bowl in the near future, we can work on our layouts. Have a great week everyone.
Larry, thank you!! The MTH station platforms are neat! I have a freight one and need to get a passenger one someday. I also need to cover up the NYC sign with Western Maryland! Wink! I see one of yours says Pittsburgh Brewing Company! That is certainly a Western Pennsylvania icon!
So many things to do, the hobby never gets old!
Thank you Larry, The CEO has given me the green light to play in the train room today! Not sure what I will get done, but its better then working on the house! LOL
I too like the MTH platforms you have there on your layout! When you get them all hooked up it would be neat if you could do a little video as I have never seen them in action!
Brian,
Great job on all. I especially like the way the 2 shades of red on the observation car really stand out

Did you get anything cool? I really didn't see much I had to have and nothing I couldn't live without. That said, I got a screaming deal on a book about Milwaukee Road structures which had lots of stuff from Montana to WA (including the Chehalis depot, which isn't far from where I am)...

Hi Lee, I did pick up 9 gondolas and one MTH PS2 New Haven switcher and 4 bottles of woodland grass. But I am a little PO'ed right now as the switcher isn't working correctly and I have no idea how to fix it. I put a post in MTH PS2 forum and hope someone there has some good idea or news for me about it!
Cool looking book! Should be a lot of information in there for you!

Finally got my smokejacks inside my old ten stall roundhouse. The smokejacks were made as one tapered Thus the units are made so that they are rectangular as a smoke jack and taper into a square at the other end of the unit becoming the chimney.piece. The area of this unit, under the roof is the smokejack; while the area above the roof becomes the chimneys. After we completed the units in all ten stalls of my roundhouse today , we tested out the theory. See attached picture, with one of my S-3s in the stall underneath the smokejack. Works great!!
Jeff, they do work great!! Nice job.

And what everyone is waiting for with baited breath :
Lew, Great Job! I am glad you included the video! Works really wonderful! Now the big question is how are you going to hide it! LOL
Thanks, Mike! I think I'll put a small shed over the winch drum. I need more Lionel winch cable to replace the piece of electrical wire currently substituting. That will make the cable kind of disappear. Also, there is normally a mill gondola parked under the Crane which will pretty much hide that cable.
Very ingenious, Lew! Your ideas to hide it sound like winners too!!

Lew, you could do what I did and use 50lbs fishing line, can hardly see it!
Thank's Mark! Did you catch the pic I put up of a B&O excursion train at the station in Butler:
B&O FPA2 #4017. Then second unit is 4015, seen here when the power had to run-around the train at the end of the outbound leg:
Huh. I see milepost #195 to the right next to the mainline.
Well, as some may know, I started my layout a couple of years ago with Lionel Fast Track, but then ran into issues with locos backing right out of some of the switches. I then, after a lot of research, made the decision to sell all of the fast track, and to switch over to Ross Custom Switches and track.
The table is 114" x 58 1/5", and I made a nice green grass cover for my table using Woodland Scenics Spring Grass mat, with a thin cushion/pad of laminated floor under-lament for a bit of sound deadening.
I had planned to lay down the outer loop, when I realized that the edges were curling up because I just made the mat the size of the table, and didn't staple it down, thinking that the raised fascia would hold it in place. I also then decided to add another leg to the table to make it a long "L" to allow a much longer loop, and more space for trains and other stuff. The "L" will be 91" x 52", so it will add a lot more space.
Well I finally had a friend come over and help me make a new cover for the main part of the table, which I made approx 6" larger on all sides so that we could pull it down and staple it in place. I also added a second layer of the cushion/pad material. You can see the seams where I had to piece it together to get it large enough for the table
Now I can go about building the "L" and getting it covered and attached to the table. It will attach to the right half of the visible side of the table, and will have an approx. 2 foot long45 degree corner where it joins at the middle of the table.
The cover for the "L" will be stapled down and then the two will simply be attached together with long utility screws. There will be a noticeable joint there between the two folds, but there will be enough going on in that area to mask it a fair amount.
Here is a pic of the table with the new cover.
The 8th of 9 Lionel Santa Fe 21" passenger cars is done, The "Navajo" Observation.
The Observation has people installed on seats that are visible through the car body windows. I set the body shell next to the chassis to find which seats would be in front of a window. There is no sense in placing people who will be hidden behind a wall.
The placement of the people seemed to take forever: grinding, trimming, repainting flaws, and finally gluing into/onto the seat. With the Bar missing from the center of the Observation Lounge, I overpopulated the remaining seats to compensate for the void in the middle of the car. I still have plans to contact Lionel parts for a Bar from the NYC ESE Observation.
The final Santa Fe passenger car is the Baggage with opening doors. It will get the interior floor painted and baggage installed. When I finish the Baggage, I have the two Challenger Add-on cars from 1927060 2-pack to detail.
Sincerely, John Rowlen
John, looks great! How are you going to top this project?
Mike, To TOP this project I will have to get off my BOTTOM and finish my "Valley of Bridges" layout. You have passed me by, and it is time for me to finish the layout with the corrections I discovered I need to make.
It is easier to type what I am going to do, than to do the things I type.
Sincerely, John Rowlen

Lew, going between Pittsburgh and Butler you would have gone through Mars and Valencia. I grew up about a half mile from the tracks at Valencia.

Yesterday I spent the day in the train room working on getting the new to me New Haven switcher running. The rear motor was binding up but with help from a couple of wonderful forum members I got it going again. It appears that the grease had started to set up in the truck, by turning the top of the motor I got it freed up and running smoothly.
I also spent some time weighting some of my new rolling stock, its amazing how well cars run on the layout when they are the right weight! Here are a couple of photos and video so Lew knows I did it!
Also I did a little head scratching on a new to me crane, still working on that one! LOL

Brian, The switcher will fit right in.
Mitch, Norma appears to be right at the controls while you take care of sad business.
Yesterday I did a little sorting of all the paper things I brought back from my Mum and Dad's house. Stay with me, this is train related as the photograph I posted yesterday shows, I can't get at any layout building materials until I find a place for all their mementos, high school and college yearbooks, photographs, funeral documents, cards, etc. They are all organized in piles, but I'm not sure where I'm going to put them yet. Some of them still smell like mothballs since Dad must have had some of his fly tying treated pelts and whatever you call game bird 'pelts' in the plastic bin I found all these paper things in. If I can smell mothballs, my wife certainly will smell it much stronger.
Mark, this may help get rid of the mothball odor:

Brian, I cant wait to see the BNSF working out west here!
Mark, I know what your talking about, when we moved my mom in with my brother the rest of my 5 siblings and I had to clean out her house for sale. It took us a full week to go threw everything!

Johan, what a wonderful job on the box car! Your work still amazes me!
Well don't tell the CEO, but before I start work on the house I went out to the train room and moved my crane out to the closest track near the edge of the table per the suggestion of Dave AKA Darlander! I have to admit it looks a lot better there. I still have to get the travel motor hooked back up so I can be like Lew! LOL
Mike, I like the new location.
I can see a scenario where the #182 unloads a barge (placed in the isle way) and the #282 then loads that material into mill gondolas.
I did a tiny bit of work on the Winch Shed:
I'm thinking about what to do with that giant-sized stack.
Also what color it should be. I think the same as the Crane cabin which brings me to another subject. These PW Gantry Crane cabins are ridiculously out-of-scale and sooner-or-later Ima' do something about that....The whole thing is pretty much imaginary because I don't think anyone ever built gantry cranes of this sort/size. It's a matter of making the caricature work and for me that means the crane cabin needs to at least be large enough to fit an operator.

A man can never have too many Christmas trains.
A couple details regarding the Gantry Crane project.
The newly modified control panel:
The left-most momentary center-off toggle switch raises/lowers the electromagnet and rotates the Crain. The red slide-switch operates the clutch-solenoid such that switch down (off) causes the Crane to rotate with activation of the left-hand toggle switch and slide-switch up (on) causes the winch cable to lower or raise when the motor is activated. The right-hand momentary center-off toggle switch moves side-to-side, causing the winch-motor to run which traverses the Crane left or right. The right-hand slide switch activated the electromagnet. Having motorized traverse-movement brings a lot of reality to the caricature because control panel actions cause the Crane to perform all of the actions a prototype crane would. It definitely adds fun&satisfaction to operation.
I rummaged in the sewing room and found heavy-duty carpet thread:
The winch-cable almost disappears from view now.

Mitch, I looked over the information on the link. It is very informative. Reading it I must happily say that it isn't so bad that the odor fills the room. I think airing things out is the answer. Light paper items don't have the smell anymore. Now it is mainly when I open up a yearbook, I can smell it. I think sitting the book upright opened as much as possible to let individual pages to the air may solve the problem.
Mike, The crane looks much better out front!!
Johan, that speeder boxcar is excellent!!
Lew, the added controls look good. I agree with Bob that an old boxcar would work out better.
Paul, You just keep finding more places for switching cars to industries. That's good.
Dave, It is hard to give up the layout, but with new construction on the horizon, I'm sure you are wanting to start.

Lew- how about an old caboose or boxcar for a shed? Would be more in scale next to the tracks.
There isn't really enough room. The winch-drum had to be aligned to produce a straight pull on the Crane feet so it is pretty close to the track:

Lew,
It was a tough day crawling on and under the layout. My Father will come to the mountain tomorrow to run trains. Last time my milk can launcher didn't work. It has been rewired and joined by a 1952 version plus new milk cans. I installed a Lionel #445 switch tower. Next, a #195 light tower was given access to 10.5 VAC. All pieces of "action track" are working. I lined up a Breakfast Express, milk, chicken, and ham destined for Birmingham. There will also be a passenger train bound for Tuscaloosa. I relocated lumber left from the recent track upgrade. I even took out the garbage. I hope we will have a fun day with few derailments.
Bill
Bill, It sounds like you are ready to go for Dad’s visit!
Sounds like progress is being made on many railroads. It is fun to see,
I started painting the Union Pacific Challenger Dome Coach #7014 from the 1927060 2-pack.
As I wait for some new paint and figures for the Santa Fe Baggage Car, I shifted to what I could accomplish: painting and detailing the 2nd 2-pack Challenger Dome Coach. The painting is done and I am looking at photos of my other Challenger Domes to make sure I change the placement of people in this car to avoid duplicating the seating arrangement.
The painting took four coats of paint and then some touch-up. The mold release oil caused the first and then second coats to be very thin with lots of show through of the plastic seats. It took over eight hours of painting in the last two days, starting last night. The work doesn't look like much without people, but a good paint job is necessary since the LEDs brightly light the inside so flaws can be seen.
Tomorrow I will be grinding the figures and placing them throughout the car.
Sincerely, John Rowlen

The PER crew had their [switching] work cut out for them this AM at the East End. Three set-outs:
and four pick-ups, including the covered hopper under the tipple:
On Edit: Ghaa! Forgot to say the purpose of this post was to show how inconspicuous the Winch-Shed is in the overall scheme of the East End industrial area.
We started to work on structural support for Scenery on the layout. Styrofoam is an excellent material since it is lightweight and can be formed easily. A source of white Styrofoam pieces is packing in boxes for different goods and appliances we buy. A lot of these pieces can be used as is to form the structure for terrain. Cutting these does make a mess with the charged particles that result.
Here is some work we have done at one end of the layout where there is a tunnel portal .
on the back side of the upper level bridge crossing the duckunder
on the left side of the portal
;and the right side. Here I used some pink foam board which makes a wall from the upper level to the lower level
And an overall view. All the Styrofoam has been glued with white clue to the wood table and to each other. When the Glue dries this will be a pretty rigid and lightweight structure to support the Woodland scenic plaster cloth to form the terrain.

Your description and pictures are very helpful as I consider doing something very similar in the corner of my layout, which has one main line elevated with a bridge and one running parallel below it. Thank you!

will be doing some plaster cloth later so we can continue to follow the process.
Thank you for your comment. I try and use material on the layout that are readily available and can be repurposed rather than disposed of.
Over the past couple of days I have completely torn down my table for my Train Layout. Since our basement is being waterproofed so that will be good in the long term. It is essentially phase one of basement work. I am going to look at getting more modular bench work this time around, that way when I am able to finally finish my basement it will be a heck of a lot easier to break it down and and store it. That way I don't need to spend a long time completely breaking everything down to have any work done.
