Decoynh--on flat land I lay track straight onto the foam. On grades, I run the luan supported by foam blocks underneath (with the foam blocks gradually changing height as dictated by the grade). Then I lay Midwest cork on top with the track on top of that. It "seems" like it should be a good system. But we will see--the jury is out.

My last HOn3 layout was by the book--L girder benchwork supporting plywood with homasote on top. I foolishly did not wear dust masks when building it and I have been dealing with the respiratory issues that ensued ever since. It was all my fault. Homosote on plywood is a great base for a layout. But I am so spooked now that I knew I would never do anything like that again. Then I started the new layout on the foam and I have never looked back.

My "benchwork" is even more off the track (pardon the pun!). It is a metal frame that started life supporting tape racks in Blockbuster! I bought the used frame to use building a trade show display. It was sitting around after the my last trade show was long over and I said "hmmmm....looks like sturdy benchwork to me!" The metal frame has worked out very well indeed. Solid all around. But I took precautions to bolt the sections together instead of just using the pot metal clamps that Blockbuster used. I would never risk crawling my 265 pound bulk onto the platform. But I have come close!

With the metal frame, another bonus is that the frame and legs are all around the edges of the platform. Underneath is mostly clear (I added some center support legs just as a precaution). I built several automobile-style "creepers"--taller and more comfortable-- to lay down underneath, looking up at the underside of the platform. There is plenty of space underneath to "ride" the creepers from one wiring hub to the next. Such luxury!

Laziness is the mother of invention, right? Or do I have the quote wrong?

I really haven’t gotten much done on my layout this year, in part, because I have so much “stuff” laying on the layout. So today, I started the clean up process with all the extraneous engines. I started by cycling out a few engines from my engine yard. The remaining engines got rearranged in anticipation of adding a bunch of steamers I have sitting around. Now I could probably have done everything in about 15 or 20 minutes if I just picked each engine up and placed it where I wanted it, but no... I spent about 2 hours with my Cab2 throwing switches and making short moves. It was rather relaxing!!! I now have enough room for around four additional steamer.

Tomorrow, in addition to placing the engines in the yard, I’ve got a bunch of rolling stock that needs to be put away, then back to actually working on the layout!!!

Great pictures fellows, I haven’t worked on my layout for awhile as I’ve been visiting friends. Here’s a picture of my friends new Big Boy, the newest and greatest, gloss friendly, Lionel legacy and many neat features. He is a 1st Lieutenant in the Army stationed at Ft. Campbell 26 years young, and a train lover. Happy Railroading Everyone....

Carl,

I am sorry that I do not know the Lionel part number for the Dome Floor.  There is no parts diagram in the car box.  The seats are separately applied to the Dome Floor, and they are inserted into rectangular holes in the floor at the factory.

My "Challenger" Camera passenger car had three seats installed tilted, and they needed to be moved to stand properly.  One seat post broke, and I had to glue it and the two people in the seat to the Dome floor to secure it.

The Challenger Camera Vista Vision passenger car is 2027270.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Carl,

Call Lionel Parts,  The Dome Floor has been used for a couple of years under other product numbers,  The new UP Camera car is probably not in the system because parts have not been gathered up and sent to Lionel yet.  I bought the interior of the NYC Empire State Express coach car from Lionel Parts and used the seats I cut from the two floor pieces,

Good luck on your search.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

I started painting 36 more P4806 Seated People from China on Ebay.

The Preiser 65602 Unpainted Seated People 24-pack is not available.  I ordered three from a US Supplier at $37.95 for 24 people, including the adults with babies, plus $14.95 shipping.  I may get them in four weeks.  German Dealers can't ship to the United States on Ebay.

In frustration, I ordered three 50-packs from China at $9.99 each, plus $1.00 shipping.  For less money, I get 150 people instead of 24.  By the time I pay the $14.95 US Dealer shipping, I could have 250 China figures instead of 24.

The German figure blanks will cost me about $2.00 each, The China figure blanks cost 20 cents each.  The quality is noticeably different, but with two coats of paint and the passenger car moving, the effect is about the same.

UPDATE:  The 36 plus 4 people are finished. Just some touch-up painting is needed.  Two more 4806 50-packs arrived today from China.  Two and three more 50-packs are on the way to me.

Have a good week.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

I always wanted an SP SW1, but could not find any in the original 1939 paint style made by any of the manufacturers of 3 rail. So I bought an MTH  a couple of years ago with a different railroad’s paint scheme and planned to repaint and reletter it. I only recently finally found a source for dry transfers for the SP SW1. So at last I finished this projecy and just test ran the engine. A longtime goal finally finished!

Looks like a beautiful layout as well.

I was getting ready to move four steamers into the engine yard when I decided to have a steam parade... on the same track!!! I can happily report that I didn’t have any accidents   I also tried out a new toy - after a recent thread on taking videos for YouTube, I picked up a Sony HD Handycam HDR-CX440 (suggested by @BNSF-Matt) - I’m happy with the results for my first video!!! The engines are all Lionel Legacy models... NYC J3a #5418, NYC Niagara #6005, NKP Berkshire #765, and PRR J1a (and I’m an outlier on this one - I like the haunting whistle).

Created my control panel for my layout.   Cut out holes for the touch toggles but may do it again with cutting out holes and let the light shine through the paper.   Curious if you anyone has used the touch toggles did they cut out holes or not.   This is mounted in a 11x8 picture frame as a side note

Added some of the passenger car lines across the top for something extra.  Tried as best to go East to West

Sprayed  bit of CRC 2-26 lubricant on the standard gauge loop near my ceiling in my home office. Its nothing special. I am running a #390 Lionel Classic with three #516 hoppers (one vintage Lionel and two MTH ones)  and a vintage caboose. I find it relaxing. Just ordered a #384 Lionel Classic from Trainz to join the fleet. My other item is a #318 vintage set, which I acquired from a client whose grandfather owned it in the late 1930's. Both the grandfather and client (whom I represented for a divorce) have since passed. The client's brother was in a motor vehicle accident in 1965, long before I was a lawyer, hit by a Reading train as he was driving his car across a RR crossing, causing severe injuries, for which he lived permanently in a nursing home. He died a few years ago. When I run my standard gauge trains, I always think of the family, because their love of standard gauge got me into that scale. My son recently expressed an interest in Lionel O-gauge pre-war, of which I have some. So the torch will be passed.

Working on 32 more People while I wait for the "Colorado Eagle" Excursion  Vista Vision Dome Camera Car to arrive.  I need to paint ties, white shirts and Coats on these figures from China.

The work is done.  Some more bags of 50 seated people wait for me to start painting again.

Have a good weekend.

Sincerely, John Rowlen.

Looks nice Paul. I didn't see any D&H power moving though 😂😂

Been away from the layout for a while. I'm finally putting the lights back in my Ameritowne building after it's been sitting on my workbench for weeks and weeks. One step forward, two back. I installed the new light for the loading dock and soldered it in only to find that one of the coach lanterns is toast. It worked last time I checked it. So now I need to order some new lights from Evan Designs before I can move forward

I was hoping to get it back on the layout this weekend. Oh Well......

Paul, Wonderful Steam parade! I only have one steam engine that is from my grandson and it just sits cause I never can get it to run right.

JJWyatt, Nice job on the control panel!

NSRailfan100, WOW! You must have one understanding woman! LOL Looking good and I really liked your video update. One thing though I could barely hear you in the video. I also might have an idea for your lift bridge.

Lancer, Nice engine!

Bob, That really sucks, but it's still a wonderful looking building!

Jstewart204, Now that looks like a fun weekend project!

I haven't been in the train room for awhile but did pick up a new truck for the layout at Walmart for $6. I think it will fit right in. Also today I think I am going to try and figure out what is wrong with the motor in my 182 crane. I will try and get some photos of the truck and a video of my crane when I get my computer fixed! LOL

I hope everyone has a great week and gets time for there layout!

Hi guys I hope you all had a great day on your layout today! I spent some time adding LED lights to a couple building and wiring all 3 in the corner up.

IMG_20200921_140346737IMG_20200921_140318348

After that I found a nice little ford to go on the back of the hot Rod car hauler.IMG_20200921_140233305

Then while I was under the layout I found these street lights I  am thinking about switching over to LED's! But that will be next weekends project.

IMG_20200921_140420699

I hope this video works as it is the noise my Crane is making!

Everyone have a great week! And find time for your trains and layouts! But most of all have fun!

Pennsynut, thanks it sure is a chore sitting under the layout wiring them in, but I sure like how they look.

John, sure sounds like you have all winter planned! At the rate your going your going to need more passenger cars! LOL

Andy, Wonderful work on the building! I wish I could afford something like that, but then again I also like scratch building what I can!

SuperChief, wow that sure is alot of dirt work! Sure looks good. Makes me feel like I need to get off my rear and get my yard done! Thanks for the motivation!

Thats a lot of wonderful projects everyone!  I have been working outside since the weather turned cooler, but I did find time for the layout this past weekend.  I put in all the switches and track along with the power drops for my little lower level yard.  I tested the drops with alligator clips and everything seems okay.

NSRailfan,  just a heads up. I bought a few items from Cabin Fever and thought the shipping charge was odd. I reached out to them for an explanation and there was an error in their system. I received a credit right away. They have a new system and are working out the bugs. If you end up having questions reach out to them, they have been very responsive and good to work with. Jeff

Train orders for today: After dropping the empty mail train on a passenger car team track, the K4s continued on to the engine facility where I cleaned the rollers on the engine and tender. The RPO was cut out to be joined to the local commuter train. An M1a pulling a WB mixed freight stopped for a block signal on the ridge.

IMG_20200924_172616IMG_20200924_172642IMG_20200924_172712IMG_20200924_172741Today, after the M1a dropped its mixed freight in the arrival yard lead, it continued to the engine yard for routine maintenance, coal and water. B6s No. 522 pulled the cars to the yard to be switched to businesses or added to other trains.

I have been running MTH Premier Passenger cars (2) and matching MTH baggage mail car as a local commuter. They measure 17 inches. I got a GGD baggage mail car recently for my mail express train. I decided to reassign it to the local but it it's totally out of place dimensionally with the MTH cars. So I substituted three K-line passenger cars (18") that make the train look somewhat better. One coach, a combine and an observation car.  If train shows open up next year I will try to sell the MTH cars and get two more K-line coaches. Looking to get 4 wheel trucks for them as well.

Mike g, nice work with the buildings. When you get a chance to work on the layout you get a lot done.

Mark, you are getting alot accomplished. Looking good.

Johan, always a nice scene to showcase your work. Very nice job on the boxcar. Thanks to you always posting your pics I was finally able to get a State of Main car with Potatoes on the side.

Bob, nice motive power additions to the layout. And the corner has turned out really good.

Yesterday got this in the mail. I lost out on the first one on the B but a few days later another showed up and I got it. Pic........... I have got to get back to working on the layput instead of surfing the net for things to buy. Paul 2

Paul. You're welcome. It’s always a pleasure to post pictures on the O-gauge forum and I really appreciate a lot of all the feedback I get. The BAR car looking so good, State of Maine is a one of the best looking box car ever. 🤝

Johan

SO I have been gone for a couple of day and there sure has been some wonderful work being done! To the point that I cant  call everyone out. I just love it when I get a chance to see what everyone is doing! The weather here is nothing but rain so the CEO gave me permission to work in the train room today. I have 13 street lights I plan on switching over to LED and paint the screws for them black. I will then wait for the CEO to help with placement!

I hope everyone has a great Saturday and finds time to have fun with there layouts and trains!

@mike g. posted:

Morning, looks great! Just wondering if you scratch built it or did you buy it?

Thanks Mike. I scratch built it with insulation foam several years ago. Some of the artists on the forum have made some impressive walls and inspired me to try making this and a long bridge as well. I painted it flat black and left it for another day to color because chosing colors is often challenging for me. I mixed acrylic craft paints for variations for the stone blocks. I think the color variations make it interesting but not realistic. I may make another one and copy an actual PRR tunnel portal and try to select a more realistic color for limestone and concrete just for fun.

I will post pics of the bridge I painted last night later. Cheers.

IMG_20200925_141307IMG_20200926_115806IMG_20200926_115854This morning I decided to weather the bridge/wall that I painted last night. If it was not for covid I can't say whether I would have ever worked on those nagging small leftover "to dos". Here is before and after. It's not supposed to be a bridge rather a wall to support the natural geology there, so eventually, I plan to have a brick/stone panel behind the stone wall.

Scott, wonderful backdrop photo! Really brings things to life!

Well I guess I will be making another trip to the store tomorrow as I miss counted how many lights I had to switch over to LED's. instead of 13 I had 23 and got them all done today, but dont have enough screws to mount them. It took me most of the day, but then again I am a little slow at somethings! LOL here are a couple photos!IMG_20200926_091112031IMG_20200926_091116779IMG_20200926_150209203

Hi Guys, was able to get out to the train room today and did some mock up for future building I plan on picking up at Menards when we make our trip to North Dakota next month. I plan on getting the fire station and Police One Plaza. So I had to do some clearing and mark out future road way. Also the CEO wants a park so I moved my pass over stairway to its new location.

Here are a couple photos. Here is a before photo.IMG_20200911_055610754

Then after.IMG_20200927_150949801

Then something special for in front of the Police Station!IMG_20200927_151113936IMG_20200927_151143806

I am going to have to redo the light on the left and it got to much blue paint on the LED.

I hope you all had a great weekend and found time for some fun! Please take care Everyone!

Mike;

I missed this somehow...thanks, it was actually a lot of fun playing with the speed to insure I didn’t have an expensive accident!!!

Now, as to having only one steam engine, I am shocked, nay a-Paul-ed... looks like we are going to have to make a concerted effort to drag you over to the dark side

Randy, than you sir, I dont get much time to work on it but when I do I spend all day out there!

Mark, No way dad has everything Menards has ever made! By the time I get done I will have a total of 17 Menards buildings and 5 lighted cars, maybe more cars when I get back from ND. LOL Just dont tell the CEO.

Paul, Maybe someday when I get rich and famous~! LOL

Bob, I am glad you got your lights already! I cant wait to see the building back on the layout!

Scott, thank you sir! The plaster work and trees look wonderful! I should be doing that so I dont have to move buildings, but I like a challenge !

I sure hope everyone had a great weekend and got alot done! Remember its all about the fun of things!

Well, after considerable abuse, I changed the signage on one side of my quickie bus project.  The two best 1970s rock stations In NYC are now fully represented.

As long as Scottso is still represented.

Looks good 👍

Totally agree, RSJ. Muni was a legend. However, lots of album rock format fans in my social circle that demanded some wPLJ representation. Jim Kerr and Carol Miller kept it acceptable over there so I caved.  WLIR definitely comes in third but that signage will have to go on the back of the bus in some down the road project!

Morning Mark, Just for the fun of it I will try and get a count of what Menards stuff I have. You might be really suprised!

I hope you have a great day!

I have been researching PRR passenger cars and Pullman cars leased/purchased to PRR. It is interesting to read about P58 car 1651, P70s, P70FARs, FOM, repainting and headend cars and modeling challenges but there is SO much information. I confess I have been looking at GGD's P70 coaches in particular for the non striped versions to run on my layout. I even made a mockup of a 20 inch car with freight trucks to see if I had scenery and bridge approach clearances. But as beautiful as they are, I will pass, for now, and enjoy imagination with K-line passenger cars.

So I switched my ocd to commencing operating session no.3. Ran PRR 460 E6 with a GGD RPO and three passenger cars through town and toward next destination stopping for a signal. The through tanker train is paused on the arrival yard lead before cutting out the empties cars for switching to the refinery.

Tomorrow, more orders.

Hello everyone! Hope everyone is staying healthy and having a good week so far. Today, I finally got the track screwed down and the electrical sorted and was able to run an engine up the grade. Sorry for the poor camera work, not my best work, and for the clutter. Thanks for reading/watching and happy railroading!

Trainmaster;

Your “poor camera work” is better than my best - don’t be so hard on yourself (trust me, there are plenty of people who will gladly do it for you  ). Nice job on the elevation... one comment - I remember one of your videos included a BigBoy. At the top of grade, it looks like the track takes a jog toward the wall. Have you checked the clearance with BigBoy??? Looking forward to seeing what sort of scenicing You are planning for the sides of the elevated track against the back wall.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I do have a big boy but it is only limited to my inner yard loop. When I designed this layout I wanted to be able to run anything that needed o 72 but the space I was given cannot accommodate O72 on all of the layout. Instead I made the main section, where I do all my videos, have an inner loop of O72 and the main line be O36. In other words, sadly no my Big Boy will not be going up the grade since the track cannot accommodate it. On the scenery, I plan on working from the back to the front so that I can access the back wall much easier. I also had to make the layout this way due to space. Hopefully I will get the downhill part done and be able to complete the loop and then be able to work on the scenery. Thanks again and happy railroading!

Thanks Pennsynut,

I have always wanted to perform actual/imaginary operating sessions but it seemed like I could never get enough guys to my Basement to run the switch lists simultaneously for an operating session. I guess I just never thought hard enough to consider running a session over multiple realtime days, performing a switch list or two each day. I always wanted the comradery of friends along with playing with my trains.
