What would you choose for the next 4 railroad & 2 private schemes on the Atlas PS-4750 3-bay covered hopper?

I would like to get the 1979 Grand Trunk Western scheme on the PS-2-CD 4750 covered hopper.

This is the 1974 scheme for the PS-4750 

There is an early 1974 version of the GRAND TRUNK WESTERN scheme as shown in this Pullman-Standard photo. 

 

 

Will Rich Trowbridge purchase the Grand Trunk Western PS-2-CD 4750 covered hoppers from Atlas O?

With all the road names available for this car its too bad Atlas never did this as a Masterline car. JMO

The later SCL Family Lines System scheme is one that is still around, but with CSXT reporting marks and numbers on a patch. 

This has to be offered.

The Family Lines  4750s DEFINITIVELY  need to be done. Since there's a L&N plus an SCL version of these cars,I'm guessing the reporting letters and car numbers could be changed as we know Atlas won't do both versions on the same run. Am I thinking correctly? I use Woodland Scenics dry transfers and they do real good for me.

A SBD System & Chessie 4750 also need to be done,as well as a modernized CSX hopper. By "modernized," I mean CSX has changed the placement of their car numbers as well as added conspicuity stripes since the 1st Atlas run of a CSX 4750 was done.

I see a lot of the '70s SCL/L&N version of Family Lines 4750s as well as the '80s version,now restenciled in CSXT letters & numbers to this day.

Another thing us modern modelers need,though not needed for these cars when they were manufactured,but have been put on most freight cars since,are lower safety shelf couplers. I'd place about a $1200 order if I could find whoever has produced these couplers in the photos shown in this link,but as of yet,I've had no luck. On the Grand Trunk,I know CN merged with GT and I used to see mixed motive power. I haven't seen any GT for years. Did IC and CN buy out GT?

My choices for new runs of Atlas 4750s. L&N Family Lines 4750. This was from the '80s version that included the SCL/FLS that FALCONSERVICE posted. Next is an X-Family Lines 4750,restenciled for CSXT,then a modern CSX 4750 and last,an X-SBD System 4750 restenciled for CSXT.

Only the B&O had Chessie System 4750 covered hoppers and they were a small number compared to other railroads. Eventually the Chessie System B&O can be produced.

I agree. I remembered there were only 200 of these produced versus,and I'm guessing here,but probably 1,000s of the Family Lines System 4750s when you add up all the cars from '70s and '80s runs of these cars.

Family Lines need to go 1st but following the Atlas' way of production,Chessie will probably be next. Not trying to "bash" Atlas,just stating my opinion based on past productions. Not "bashing" Chessie either,I live by the Chicago mainlines of the former Chessie. Wonderful cars,just would like to see heavy Family Lines 4750s 1st. JMO

Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern has a problem paint scheme. The real red graphics do not contrast enough with the navy blue body color.

Here is how a Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern PS-4750 3-bay covered hopper with CC reporting marks looks now.

The balance of red and blue would have be checked again and again by the people at Atlas to be sure there is some contrast.

The MNS scheme might work some day.

Since Atlas just produced 4750s that for the most part have almost disappeared from the rails,how many years should we figure to see Family Lines 4750s? i don't know why Atlas waits so long to produce car schemes. The SCL/yellow car,should've been done before the LN/Family Lines System 4750. i sent Rob photos of these cars years back. Now that he's gone.....?????

Just asking as I'm a "newcomer" to O Scale compared to most here.

They must have problems finding a place in China that will produce their model railroad items first, unlike Mike Wolf who has a plant dedicated to the Premier line.

Then there are two private operator schemes

Landmark is one that has not been produced on the Atlas O scale PS-4750 covered hopper.

Tangent produced it in HO scale.

Hello my friend! 

I'm not familiar with Atlas' production schedule,it seems uncertain at best,so that's why I'm asking the following 2 questions.

What makes you think a new production run of 4750's will be soon and lastly,why do you feel the SCL/Family Lines System is a likely choice? I'd LOVE to see that scheme as well as the L&N/FLS 4750 in the next run plus a Seaboard System 4750. In my humble opinion,these cars should've been done years ago and wonder why they weren't. Why Atlas waits 'till a car scheme is almost a memory at best to make a run of models,isn't good business in my eyes.

Why doesn't Atlas talk to us on this sight?

After dropping my kid off at daycare this morning, I got caught by the train halfway to work. There was a brand new car that hadn't been touched by grafitti yet with the new CSX logo and their motto "How tomorrow moves." painted on it. It looked really cool. Wish I had gotten a picture of it.

I model CSX,live in Bremen,IN by the double tracks. Was the car you saw a 5201 smooth sided hopper,or was it a 4750 rib sided car? I never saw that logo on the 4750's is the reason I ask. That'd look neat on the 4750s too.

Al, I believe it was the 5201. I'll keep my eyes open (and phone camera ready) for it from now on.

Saw a couple of NS engines (with the logo sort of painted over) behind the main engines today as well. Never saw that before.

Can someone elaborate on these hoppers? If these are 5201's they don't have lower shelf couplers and all new 5201s are built with them,also, the cut levers are wrong for 5201s. The airlines look different,thinner than modern airlines. ???????

If you like the CSX 5201s with the How Tomorrow Moves scheme,High Country Hobbies still had some in stock the last time I checked their website. These are in 3Rail. The 2 Rail sold fast & am surprised if Atlas doesn't do another run of them.

Here are the SCL FAMILY LINES SYSTEM PS-4750 covered hoppers that were built in 1980.

Here's some shots of those cars in recent years. 1st photo is an original SCL/FLS 4750,the 2nd is a SCL/CSXT Restencil. I'd order 2-4 original cars,change some car numbers as Atlas only does the 2 car numbers,then buy a few more cars and  probably make these CSXT re stencils. Would do the same with an L&N/Family Lines 4750 as well as a SBD/Seaboard System 4750. These are the 4750's I want to see produced. TILX had 4750s produced many years ago,I'm guessing but would say in the late '70-80 time frame.(?) Hope you're paying attention Atlas.

In the SCL/FAMILY LINES 4750  prototype photos,below the "FA" near the bottom sill,there's an orange box-do you know what that says? On the L&N/FLS 4750s that box says,RETURN EMPTY TO L&N RR. Does it say the same on the SCL 4750s,only with the owner being SCL instead of L&N? On any of my photos of SCL/FLS 4750s,there's no orange box. In this photo of an L&N/fLS 4750,in the next panel to the right of the NEW 12-80,is the same orange box,badly faded at this date in time,but the out of the shop paint was bright orange. Even if Atlas only does the SCL/FLS hopper,with Woodland Scenics dry transfers,I could change the SCL to an L&N,though a factory L&N/FLS 4750 would be much nicer.

Any idea how long we modelers have to wait for an announcement of the next run of 4750 roadnames?

Just wondering what these cars were loaded with.  I can't think they all carried grain? 

For a few years these PS-2-CD covered hoppers were used to deliver loads of Perlite Mineral to a local expanding plant.

Four reasons why I only own 2 Atlas Tman 4750 covered hoppers even the Weaver centerflow hopper [not pictured] has much better end detail. just saying!

What material did you use to hold your cut levers,and at what height above the rail head? They look REALLY GREAT!!

Looks like you have a nice layout even though I can only see 4 tracks.

The PS 4750 would have been a great Mline choice considering the number of rds that use this car, obviously Atlas has no problem selling R/Rs in the Tman line. Styrene is used for cut lever mtg pads when none is provided by importer can vary by prototype photos, same with cut levers that and air hoses are must addons for me, layout is small portable built on several 24 x 80 lite weight luan doors, there are actually 5 tracks in the photo [small stub end yard] to my knowledge in the 17+ years Atlas has been producing O gauge with the exception of trucks and couplers they have never upgraded tooling on any model thats been rerun. just saying!

Here are photos comparing the Trainman Denver & Rio Grande Western PS-2-CD 4750 3-bay covered hopper with the LionScale D&RGW PS-2-CD 4740 3-bay covered hopper. When Weaver Models designed the PS-2-CD 4740 covered hopper they apparently did some careful compression with the length of the car. The 4740 did have the flat top. The 4750 had the improvement of the rounded top.

Why do the Lionscale hoppers not have end reporting marks?

Someone at Lionel must have NOT acquired racks that will allow them to hold the cars in place to print on the ends.

For December 2017 somebody at Atlas chose to have produced TRINITY 5161 covered hoppers, most of them in "heritage" paint schemes.

Now we have to wait until January 2018. 

It is highly likely that PENN CENTRAL is one of the next PS-4750 paint schemes.
