Where To Mount DCS WIFI Units

Without a doubt a line of sight is always better if possible.  While the WiFi signal is pretty robust, if you can I would keep them above the layout.

 

My 2cents.

Just nail it to the wall next to the TIU to which it's connected. Don't overthink it.

Thanks guys for your input. we will keep it simple. All is well here on the left coast Marty. We are very jealous and envious that all the demonstrations by the train manufacturers are on the east coast. However, Matt and I are planning on going to York in the spring.

Somehow I picture someone with a hammer saying

"You told me to nail it to the wall.

Jeff, we are jealous you guys get all the sun.

Yeah, but when those ocean breezes stop, the temperature goes up and the humidity goes through the roof.

 

We do get some great sunsets and on clear days we can see Santa Catalina Island and the Santa Barbara Islands to the north. The temperature is staring to cool down so we have to go back to wearing long pants and break out the windbreaker jackets.

We will post a picture from the club today. The vistas are truly breathtaking. We are spoiled with our weather. In the 80's today.

My TIU is underneath my layout and I really can't put anywhere else. If I put the WIU next to the TIU as Barry suggested underneath my layout should there be a problem? 

 

Does it need line of sight with smart phone or iPad? 

I've got a WIU and it works under the layout but I can't get it to connect to the network to save my life

No, it does not. If your remote can talk to the TIU in its present location, putting the WIU next to the TIU will work just as well, if not better.

Thank you, Barry that's what I thought but it's always good to get your and others opinions. 

You need to pre-drill so as not to split anything and then make very precise blows with the hammer, being very careful not to miss the nail head.

rtr, one should be cautious not to predrill the wifi module while power t it is either connected or disconnected.

Actually, the WIU mounts to a wall using a pair of slots on its bottom. One inserts into the wall a pair of screws (or nails), placees the WIU on the wall with the slots aligned with the screw (or nail) heads, and then slides the unit down until it locks in place.

 

The WIU itself doesn't come into proximity with the hammer at any time.

Barry, glad to hear about the slots.  I'd already pulled out of a box a 6" galvanized spike and my 2-lb hammer.  Wanted to be ready when/if it comes in.

Me too, adding the slots sounds like a much better idea for mounting rather than 'nailing it' to the wall. Also no need to worry about the power status I failed to mention above since pre-drilling is no longer required. Got me out of that one too.

Matt, for what you guys pay in taxes, you're entitled to a decent view when the smog clears. 

As stated earlier in this post, we will be installing 5 wifi units for each TIU. I just received Barry book and on page 207 it states the characteristics of the the standard version of the DCS App. Among them is that it will not operate in Super TIU Mode. Am I to assume that we must now wait for the full version to be released prior to using this app on our layout at the club? Barry?

25 wifi units seems a bit much for 5 TIUs.  Was this a typo?

Unfortunately, the Standard version of the app can only communicate with one WIU. The Pro version, due out next year, will be able to talk to multiuple WIUs.

 

Just for the record, I attempted to connect a pair of TIUs to one WIU using a USB hub, however, that didn't help.
