I took these pictures in April 1986 at the NYS&W Little Ferry, NJ Roundhouse. NYS&W brought Fonda Johnston and Gloversville Alco S2 engines #20 & #21 to Little Ferry to be scrapped by Naporano Iron Co. shortly after the NYS&W purchased the upstate New York short line. It would have been nice if these engines were saved. The town of Fonda, NY was reportedly founded by the late actor Henry Fonda's ancestors.

...dangerous "sandwich" constellation, when light-weight Talgo-coaches are coupled between two heavy diesels.

No, one one end is either a control car or a gutted former F40 with only a control stand. There's only an actual locomotive at one end.

It's a system that has served Amtrak for a while.
