I wanted a Legacy engine that had one of the smoke features so I called TrainWorld and purchased the Legacy B&O 4-4-2. It arrived today and just back upstairs from opening and getting it on the track. Engine set to PROG and both smoke units checked as being in the ON position as well as the Oddyssy as On. Added the exact number of drops of fluid and used the funnel. Engine ID changed to 14 fine. Set back to run and started it up , loaded module, sounds great, looks great, no blinking code lights, moves out nicely, but something is missing. No smoke, blow the whistle, no smoke. Stop and shut down and turn over engine and switch smoke switches to OFF. Start up still no smoke from either location. Switch smoke switches back to ON, still no smoke at all. Tried Reset twice, no smoke, hit the button and it shows the smoke unit as being set to HIGH. I am not getting any blinking light error like I did with the other two Legacy engines with bad smoke units. Anything I missed here on getting it to smoke?

So first thing tomorrow I have to call TrainWorld as they did not include any receipt or invoice, just a 3 page sale brochure of theirs. I am sure that Service Dept. needs the receipt to repair under warranty, why is it hard to get receipts from online Lionel dealers?

Paul,

Since this is an earlier Legacy engine before sequence control you will not have the blinking light diagnostics.

Also, this engine has had a history of smoke unit issues. I would recommend if you don't see smoke production in the new couple of days to contact Lionel customer service directly. They act quickly and efficiently and get the locomotive back to running condition in no time.

I have the Legacy Atlantic too and had to send it back. It now works flawlessly.

I just bought a new earlier TMCC version of the 460 at a local train show from a LHS. After running it for a few days the sound died, completely mute, including the bell and beautiful whistle. I have a Legacy control system. Everything else works. Called Lionel and they gave me the reset code (47) but that didn't help. They told me that they cannot accept any repair work until March. Guess I'll run the engine quietly until then. BTW, it smokes great.

Did Lionel give a reason that they are not accepting any engine failures for the next 5 or 6 weeks ?

Said they were overloaded. It probably is all the Christmas presents that need help.

Thanks, the envelope was taped to the bottom of the box so I missed it completely. Will call Lionel today for RMA. If told March for repairs then guess I will be returning it to  TrainWorld.

Hi PAUL,

I had a bad smoke unit too, in my new CP Vision Hybrid ES44AC, that I purchased last Monday.  Called Lionel and talked with KATHLENE, nice gal, told her the problem.  She sent me RA via E mail, sent it out last Thursday, got confirmation they received it on Friday.  Repaired and sent back to me yesterday,Thursady.  Replace 8 ohm resistor, and fixed contact for spinning radiator blades.  All was really fast. Now runs great.

I talked to Lionel recently about a repair.  They told me the delay until March was for out of warranty repairs.  I believe that they will work on engines in warranty.  You should call to check.

Hey Paul, I have three of the Legacy E6 Atlantic engines and did have another until Lionel Refunded it. All 4 of these engines have had smoke failure including the last one which I also purchased from Trainworld a couple of months ago. Some had problems with the main stack only and some with the main and aux. stacks. Lionel told me there was a problem with the gasket in the smoke unit stopping the fan. Sometime they smoke for a while and then the fluid swells the gasket and stops the fan.

Lionel has taken care of all of them and after the repairs both smoke units have been working without any problems.

I really like thes E6 Legacy Atlantics. I'm sure after your repair you will enjoy yours also. Good Luck. Casey.

Not sure if this your problem but if your 10 wheeler was part of group that included the NYC system 4-4-2, all out of that group had a Legacy board that required reprogramming. Most were reprogrammed before shipping but some (mine included) escaped.

Probably because they're moving employees out of their Chesterfield office into a office in Sterling Heights Mi.

Where did you hear that at?

(If you say LHS then the credibility of the information is reduced to near zero)

Paul,

Good to see you posting! I, too, recently purchased one of these beauties from Trainworld, (December) and have had a few bumps in the road. Key word, patience with this one, it'll be well worth it. They are absolutely fabulous once the bugs are gone! Might even make me a Lionel guy after all my MTH years.

Sent it back to Lionel twice, second time was the charm. And it does have the blinking light diagnostic. Rather annoying strobe effect! They replaced the smoke motor, gasket on the smoke pot, had an engine rub on a gear, but after straightening out those problems she's running fine!

Can't say enough about how easy Lionel - Ohio is to work with on repairs, and quick turn around, too!

Good luck, and keep the Natty Boh cold! Steamed crabs will be back before you know it!

Try setting the train brake about half way, hit the H button at the bottom, set the smoke to high on the screen, and have at it. You'll be impressed.

Received it back from Lionel and it now smokes like it should in that both the stack and whistle produce smoke. With the setting to high on the Legacy remote the whistle smoke is sweeeeet! The stack's smoke is okay, it won't set off the smoke detector's that's for sure. Lionel replaced the smoke fan motor Part# 6101154130 and the Fan Housing/Gasket Part#  6101150208.

Can't say enough for the quick turn around time, I shipped it on Monday afternoon last week, they received Wednesday afternoon, and I got it back Thursday afternoon this week.

I really like the Legacy engines I have after they all took a trip back to Lionel, I do wish that the volume on the Legacy engines were as loud as my MTH engines. If I am running both Legacy and DCS engines at the same time, I have to turn the volume down to at least 50% on the MTH engines or the Legacy engines are drowned out. Thanks to Mike Reagan and the great staff at the Service Dept. for another excellent warranty repair. Just wish they weren't getting so many returns from me lol!
