Sometimes that is not accurate especially on model changes.  But it is rare for the battery to be in the engine.  There are a few models but I can't remember which.  Maybe the early Triplex?  G

Look for a charging jack in the tender.  No jack or a round one will use the 8.4 volt (9v style) NiMh battery.  A two pin jack will use the AA 2.4 volt battery pack.

One exception with the charging port is the 2004 production K-4 item 20-3126-1. I bought this engine when new and just last week replaced the batteries. It has no charging port but has a three volt board. It also uses 2 rechargeable AA Batteries instead of the double AA Battery pack. 2004 production models could go either way as to what board it had in it.
