MTH released this Railking LVRR GP9 in January.  I had it on pre-order at Nicholas Smith, but for some reason that fell through.  I ended up getting it at Ye Olde Train Shoppe.

The Lehigh Valley had two GP9s.  The 300 had three different paint schemes and the 301 had four in their time at LV before they were painted Conrail blue.  The 301 was one of only two LV engines that had the wide yellow stripe scheme with the other being an RS3.

The model looks good in this paint scheme.  It has good sounds and smoke (although neither the catalog nor the website description mentions smoke).  One thing I don’t care for is that the MU hoses (molded into the pilot) are painted in tiger stripes.  I would rather see them black along with the rest of the pilot like the prototype.

Lehigh74 - I purchased the same engine and was not sure about smoke???  I put a couple of drop in the forward exhaust stack and the only smoke was out of the body frame.

Have you added smoke fluid?  Did it work? If so, do you recall which exhaust stack in and does smoke come out of both stacks or only one?

Thanks,

JP

Got a TMCC gantry crane for the scrap yard. Was a little fussy out of the box , needed some adjustment to the gears to get it working properly.

Also I picked up a LC+2.0 BT 0-6-0 in Bethlehem Steel. It's next to my US Steel conventional 0-6-0. The USS I weathered some time ago,  maybe the Beth Steel will be next.

Unfortunately both locomotives have the same engine number.  I wish lionel used a different number.

I haven't added fluid yet.  I just turned it on for a few seconds with engine sounds off so I could hear the fan.  I have another GP9 and smoke comes out of both holes.  I don't think it matters what hole you add the fluid to since there is plastic manifold.

Sometimes the fluid forms a bubble and it prevents the smoke from exiting the stack.  Turn on the engine and the smoke, then while the engine is sitting in neutral on the track, try forcibly blowing into the smoke stacks. This usually works for me, particularly when i see smoke coming out of the body frame but not the stack.

Picked up a 2019 Legacy ATSF 3751 class Northern, number 3759. I have to open it up and check the thermistors are in the correct place so the smoke units, especially the whistle steam, don't burn themselves up (it's an issue on these). While I'm in there I'll also swap out the Canon motor for a Pittman.

Wow, Beauty eh! The detail is amazing and I love watching the action and smoke! Thanks for the share, great video... maybe someday (tsunami repairs, and all.. lol) Very nice.

@Lou1985 beautiful engine! I recently got the same one with the Black Bonnet scheme. Was unaware of the smoke problem though. So far so good but I will keep an eye on it!

There's a thread about the whistle steam issue if you are interested: LIONEL (2019) - 3759 Santa Fe Northern - Whistle Steam Cooked Self | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum (ogaugerr.com)

It's a pretty simple fix, as long as the unit hasn't cooked itself.

Lou1985, this is one of my favorite Lionel Legacy steamers and the whistle steam effect is the Icing on the Cake. With the Pittman motor, it’ll pull many passenger cars to parts unknown.  The video is really inspiring showing simply how far our hobby has come and yes” it is the Best of Times”. Thank you for sharing this with us. Happy Railroading Everyone

Took delivery this week of a Lionel 57 lionel steel switcher.  Made in 1996, has TMCC. Runs great,  no horn or bell or talking, manual couplers, no smoke, but like I said,  has  TMCC! In the manual lionel states that it will be noisy.  Yes it is, a true growler with that open frame AC motor.

A good addition to my scrap yard gantry crane.

It's so pretty, even the locals had to come take a look...

Couldn’t agree more.  Lehigh Valley had some gorgeous paint schemes.  The snowbird would easily be my favorite LV scheme, but the prewar switcher scheme makes it a tough choice.  I almost picked of a PS2 version of that engine at Allentown first frost a few years ago.  I didn’t get it, but I did end up getting Peter Lerro’s print Titans of Industry.  After looking at the print for a while, I regretted not getting the engine and got the same PS3 version that you have.  Later I got a matching dummy and caboose.

One of my favorite engines. I have the tmcc version to replicate the Santa Fe employee special train with the Diesel engines.

Got in a Tom Yorke "Tony's Garage".  Small building ..had to check door height to verify it was O scale.  Very dilapidated building that l will add to my ghost town abandoned station stop/mining camp.  Dunno when l will get to it, as am halfway through bashing a Nash auto dealer from a Stony Creek parts store.  Stony Creek sent me redone Nash/Lafayette signs for it.  Not sure Nash still offered the cheaper Lafayette in 1940, but did a couple years earlier, as most makes including Packard tried to make it through the Depression with a cheaper model.

Thanks. It's a nice locomotive. My Premier ATSF 2900 class Northern is still my favorite though. Makes the 3751 class look tiny in comparison. The 2900s were just imposing all around. Later design and larger locomotive/tender will do that.

I won an auction for this Lionel Semi-Scale PRR box car last month on EBay. It’s part of the semi-scale freight set that Lionel produced in the 1990’s. I just won another auction for the B&O hopper last weekend. So now all I have to find is the Shell tank car at a fair price to complete the set. I’m running my PW 2555 Sunoco tank car in the consist until I find the Shell tank car.
