Yesterday I went to a friends layout who had just installed a CAB1L system. I took a spare CAB1 Base and the cable that is used to plug it into a 991 Legacy base so we could have additional throttles using my CAB1s. It didn't work. I just hooked it up to my system here and it works fine.

Is it not possible to hook the CAB1 base to a CAB1L Base?

I don't think you understand my question. Let me try again.

I can take the original TMCC Command base that works with the original CAB1 and connect that base to the Legacy (CAB2?) base using a wye cable that connects to the DB9 ports. I can then use my CAB1 as an additional controller with the Legacy base.

However, when I tried to do the same thing substituting the CAB1L base for the CAB2 base, the CAB1(non-L) does not work.

There's no point in doing that with the BASE1L, the CAB1L remotes will work with the Legacy command base!  What would you hope to gain?

Because I was at a friends layout and he only has a CAB1L. We were doing operations and wanted to have more CABs,

Maybe I'll just give him my spare Legacy Base

Your observation is correct. The Legacy Base works with the serial wye cable as you describe, but the Base-1L does not support that functionality. It won't work.

Interesting. I would guess the other functions of that port on the original base and 991 Legacy base  - compatible with other hardware that uses that port?
