Hello all,

Arno's #12 arrived today. The good news is the motor is fine, runs smooth and quiet, however the wheels are a problem. First they aren't for this engine. They are brass, made by a company called model replicas, have a large flange on that back and don't fit the axels. I can remove the flanges so the wheels will gauge correctly. But that doesn't fix them being too big for the axels. I was thinking I can use an epoxy on the axels the put the wheels on, quarter them and go from there. But am I better off finding 4 replacement wheels or holding out for an original set of CMT wheels?

If you decide to replace the wheels contact Harry Henning, a forum sponsor, about getting four new MEW replacement wheels for the Lionel 390, painted red, tapped for 8-32 rod screws (be sure and verify this) and for a .180" axle diameter and with no gear boss. You will need to get someone to ream the wheels to fit your axles - if they are original CMC axles they are probably .1875" diameter. They should be reamed about .0005" to .001" under the axle diameter.

As far as I know, MEW was the supplier of original wheels for CMC engines.

Thanks Owen, it seems that the axles are bent as well. I'm going to try and hold out for an original set. I was able to grind the current wheels down so it gauges correctly (sort of, bent axle is still causing issues) and I quartered the wheels by eye (yeah I know, not one of my finer moments) installed a bridge rectifier and got it to complete the loop. It's not pretty and it jumps because of the wobble but it's a start. Quick video below to see it run

Figure out which end is bent, find the high spot in the driver, mark it with a Sharpe and give it some light taps with a hammer. It might take the bend out.

Thanks Steve, the problem with that is the wheels are barely on now. The shaft holes seem to be over sized so I "glued" the wheels onto the axles until I can come up with a better idea. If I do go with what Own mentioned and purchase new wheels to have installed on my axles, I'll send them out to a shop who can straighten them and mount them correctly. But besides that, the locomotive does run, so we've made progress.

Ask Harry to ream them to the right diameter for your engine! He will do it for a few bucks more.
