On my Win XP Computer, I installed V5.0 DCS and upgraded 4 TIU (Rev I, I3B and L) and 4 Remotes. The upgrades worked fine, the TIUs and Remotes all respond as V5.00. TIUs are not connected to any track or engines. The TIU are powered through Fixed Port 1. The TIU was connected via COM7 with a USB-Serial adapter.

Upgrading the TIUs and Remotes requires me to connect a 4 pin handset cord and an audio cable. I connected and disconnect those cables as instructed.

Then I tried "Transfer Remote Data to PC" (for cloning) using the Rev L TIU.  This instructs me to connect a 4 pin handset cord which I do. When I start the procedure, the DCS Loader program just keeps on searching for a TIU via COM3 and COM7  (its on COM7 through a USB-Serial adapter).

The DCS loader is set to scan (Auto Search) for the COM port which it does, but even though it scans COM7, the loader can't find the TIU there. Rebooted several times. Powered on/off several times.

The procedure instructs me to hold down the thumbwheel which I do.

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

I am no expert and the only time I did this was over a year ago, but it seems like I had trouble with the Auto Search feature and had to manually select the TIU com port and then it connected. My memory isn't what it used to be, but it might be worth a try while waiting for a better explanation? Then maybe Barry or GRJ or someone else more knowledgeable will be along with more information and/or the proper solution.

I also had one serial to USB cable that I use for my Legacy system and I could not get that to work with my DCS system. Fortunately I have a Rev L TIU and found the proper USB cable which then worked great. The USB/Serial cable I have is the one recommended by Mike Reagan in one of the Lionel videos which is a Tripp-Lite USA-19HS. However, it works just fine with my Legacy system.

You may have answered your own question. There is no part of any process using the Loader Program where one is instructed to hold down the thumbwheel.

The only time that anything is held down is the power button on the remote when performing a DCS Remote software update.

DCS Book CoverThis and a whole lot more is all in “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!"

This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at OGR’s web store!

This is the one I use and it works. (8 steps). I did have a little trouble at first  . It turned out to be the power supply. So I guess the question is.... How are you powering the tiu? Since you were able to upgrade the remote the 4 wire curly phone cable must be the right one. Maybe try another if available.

Barry I did buy the original E version for ten bucks and lost the pass word so I bought it again,  There are days when I wish I had it but we just use the basic features...

Mark,

I have the 3rd printed edition of The DCS Companion and it still uses V2.3.4 screen grabs which does show just 5 steps.

That's because you have the pre-5.0 Loader copy of the book. The current, OGR-branded copy, has the screen shot from the DCS Loader Program 5.0 on page 150, as well as all other screen shots from the Loader Program 5.0, as shown below:
