Dog house lighting.

Don't know if existed in "real life" but think it would look good on a model.

Well, the Frisco Russian Decapod dog houses didn't have a light.  It's pretty cramped in there, you'd run the risk of banging you head on the light, possibly breaking it or injuring your head.  It can be a pretty rough ride in the dog house.

The purpose of a dog house was to provide a seat and shelter from the weather when a third seat was not available inside a locomotives cab. Most road locomotives had a seat in the cab for the head end brakeman. most importantly, what's inside the doghouse? A seat for the head end brakeman.

I would add the lights weather they used them or not.  Lighting will add interest to the model and maybe a crew figure if it will fit. 

I like the doghouse to be lighted, but it would be cool to have it controlled like the cab lights and go out when you start moving.  In real life, if there was a light in there, it wouldn't be on when moving as visibility outside would probably be important.

@Bob, maybe Bob could answer that question? He knows a lot about the PRR and might be able to answer it. I hope I got the right Bob.

As mentioned the "doghouse" was there for the head end brakeman when the loco cab was too small for a third seat.    His job when the train was moving was to watch for any problems that he could see such as a smoking journal (hot box) or minor derailment or whatever - dragging equipment.

so whether the doghouse had a light or not, it would be off most of the time and especially at night so the brakeman could observe the train.

My opinion is to skip the light, but glaze the windows and put a crewman in there.

Another note, I read someplace a while back that many if not all pennsy doghouses had steam heat pipe in.

I'm not piping heat in, the brakeman will have to live with the cold!
