Hello all,

I'm looking to get some work done on an engine I have in order to more accurately resemble a particular prototype. At minimum, the project would invoke re-arranging the steam and sand domes, adding a second sand dome, and replacing the headlight. I might get more done as well depending on cost.

Does anybody have any recommendations as to who might do this kind of work? Thanks so much!

Chris,

What engine (type and maker) do you have in mind?  Is it brass, die-cast, or plastic?

I've done just what you're asking on a couple of steamers and for the most part it was a piece-o-cake.  Most domes are screwed on or soldered, relocating usually involves filling 1 hole (with JB Weld) and drilling another.

Having to grind things off is the one area that may be a headache, but if you're careful it can be done without any issues so give it some thought to do it yourself.  It's a good exercise and saves $$$.

I agree with Bob, you should consider doing it yourself.  Frankly there is some potential you will screw things up - the first time on anything is often a learning experience, but maybe you buy something cheap at a swap meet and practice first?

Regardless, the advantages of taking this approach are worth considering.  First, you will learn and develop so you can do more of this (I know from personal experience.  it gets addictive).  More important thought, you will have control and thus are more more likely to get what you really want.  I know several people who went the route you are think ing about and were a b it disappointed: another person's interpretation of the changes and detail you want is not always exactly like yours.

Worth considering, anyway.  And its FUN!
