MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I have been viewing the posts today. One great thing about railroading in the 60s and 70s is the fact we used to have,  drum roll, mixed trains. I live in northwest Iowa and about we see now are coal trains, ethanol trains, Bakken oil trains, and grain trains. Very few are mixed freight.  Too many GE units, I am an EMD fan.

UP pulls coal into 3 power plants south of Sioux City but the first built will come off line next year and be switched to gas.

BNSF just spent a few bucks adding more capacity to our yard. fro 18 trains a day to 24.

CN still goes in and out but just a couple a day.

Totals to about 30-35 trains a day.

Dick,

I live in Bremen,IN,so we here see a lot of the same traffic except not as much coal. We see a lot of tank trains & grain trains,Intermodal is probably heaviest. We see quite a few mixed trains come to think of it. I live near the former B&O mainline, now CSX, which several years back changed back over to double mains with about 17 miles of triple mains in the yard areas.

When the 1 power plant changes from coal to gas, will the rail traffic be switching tankers in place of coal,or will the rail service at that plant be terminated? Do you know if the power plants use Eastern or Western coal?

Have a Merry Christmas.

I live in southeast Florida and we have a lot of freight that comes down to Miami FL on FEC tracks. Norfolk Southern runs to Miami on FEC tracks, hauls container cars and auto cars. FEC hauls sand from Broward county outside Ft. Lauderdale up to Jacksonville FL with 100 ton hoppers, also makes a few side trips to Stuart & Ft. Pierce cement plants.

CSX also hauls a lot of cars to a place near Indiantown FL and unloads thousands of cars per week there and then the cars are shipped by truck to local car dealers in Stuart and West Palm Beach FL. Amtrak comes through on CSX tracks in West Palm Beach to Miami FL.
