great work fellow pittsburgher! you should contract out to rebuild the Carnegie science center layout. They could use a new redesign of the entire setup and use engines like yours. I think they would get more donations if they constantly updated and redid the entire thing. I really like your setup.
Chris
patrick, when you applythe grass materials to the mountains, did you use a spray mount adhesive and sprinkle the grass or earth on top?
thanks

Nice as always Patrick! I'm not sure if its the lighting in the photos or intentional, but regardless, I like the "overcast" look/ feel in the photos. Its different, and really brings out the detail in your layout.
thanks for the tip patrick. never would have thought to use something that simple!
Chris
The photos are great! As to Chris' comment about the Pittsburgh Science Center, I haven't seen it in 25 years. Back then it was good, but still a display layout. My impression of Patrick's is that it is a model railroad, and a good one. Big difference in my opinion.
Happy Model Railroading,

Please if you enjoy the pics thats great. Dont compare the layout to others at least here.
I do it for enjoyment after work. Its not enjoyable to me to be elavated or deflated by being compared. I post pics so maybe someone else can get some ideas and hopefully some people will like the work, cause theres no one in this house who cares for "trains".LOL
Wont mention her name but ,The science center display and the people who do it rock!
Patrick, Valid point. My apologies.
Mark
Great pictures Patrick!! Thanks to you my Korber roundhouse and my MRS TT are looking great so far. I will post pictures in a couple of months or so once roundhouse and TT are built and installed on my layout. Thanks again for sharing such great ideas with all of us. Keep up the great work.
Have a great weekend!
Matt
Patrick,
Great stuff always the best, hope to make time to see it live in the near future.
PCRR/Dave
Looking great!! Always nice to see the progress.
I do enjoy the science center layouts. they do excellent work, my only wish is to see some bigboy locos on the layout with all the sounds and whistles coming on. they do alot of details on it and its great. The forbes field is great and so is the town and new farmstead they just built. everyone should go see it if your in pittsburgh.
Oh, and you have to go inside the omnimax to see Rocky mountain express. sit up front. it takes your breath away when the steamer is hanging on top of the bridge!
Patrick,
Thanks you sir for a wonderful evening, I enjoyed your layout very very much.
Running your trains is a seriously great time.

Patrick, thanks for sharing more photos. Everything looks awesome. LOL, you've given me enough ideas to last a life time.
Bruce
Patrick, good to see you guys had the setup in monroeville. my little one kept me running to that race car area, so I could not come over and chat. I liked the Shay you had.
Seems like there was more activity there and different items.
chris
Chris,
If you have not seen Patrick H's layout lately, it is truly fantastic and Patrick and his wife have a beautiful home to display it. He has built an amazing multi train layout that impresses everyone who sees it.
PCRR/Dave
Hi Patrick, not sure if this was already answered in the past but I was wondering if you used Homasote or MDF in the Turntable/Roundhouse area or did you just lay everything just on plywood?? If you can please answer as soon as possible it would be greatly appreciated because I'm in the process of installing the TT and not sure if I am going to need some sound dampering material for that area. Thanks a bunch!!
Regards,
-Matt

Nicely done, Patrick!
Riding along on the train allowed me to see details that I had missed; but then again, there are so many wonderful details to see on you layout . . .
Thaks for taking the time and sharing.
Alex
Enjoyed the video Patrick!!!......WOW!!
Alan
Very nice video, was the police car lite up because of the stowaways in the flat car. Just kidding, always look forward to see what your latest posts are on your layout. You are a prime example of why this forum exists. Thank you.
Paul
Hi Patrick,
First I want to thank you very much for doing this.
Now this was totally spectacular, it made my Sunday night.I love the way you used the other engine's and passenger cars in the tunnels to add light. The ride was awesome I felt like you took me across Pennsylvania and back.
Patrick check your email
Thanks again, Alex
Patrick, the size, scope, and complexity of your RR humbles me. Whose equipment are you running. I all looks like advanced Lionel stuff. Am I right?
Right about 6:54-6:56 into the "Take a Ride..." video, did that locomotive derail on the trestle at the right edge of the shot?
---PCJ
Awesome! Thanks for sharing it!
Doc:
I am still waiting to video them MTH 4-6-0 double header engines you have. My favorite and bring the new 1218 while you are at it.
Thanks Alan and Ingenero and everyone - hope you make it this year!
Alex Ing- what details LOL

You cant see the road below but there is a house that catches on fire when the train passes, hence the police car blocking off the road. Was a gift from the guys in the club.

Like the J the Blue B&O is modified to throw blue sparks that match the engine , pretty cool huh!
I left my legacy remote by the tunnel while i was holding an auxilliary light. The b&o hit it and drug it for a few feet , guess the front truck rode for a while until the curved bridge, nice blue sparks huh? Thats why you seen the Powhaton Arrow dim breifly coming down the long run.
Just fricken awesome video with a great visual perspective!
Phenomial is all that can be said!!!!! Truely inspirational as i am about to start my own layout!!!! Great job Patrick!!!!
Patrick, what a fantastic layout and video. I revisit your thread and others frequently, and pick something new up each time. What an inspiration!!
Thank you,
Andy
Thank you Patrick for posting the whole shebang from start to finish (well never quite finsiehd)
I keep coming back to this and getting reference and pointers, a true inspiration for all.
(sorry guys this should prb be in scenery, and I'll get in trouble, but wanted to ask the source, on pages that reference the Q )
I see in the last couple of pages (of posts) you've been busy detailing things. What are you using for Trees ? I especially like the really large ones you have and was just wondering (I suspect you make your own for certain situations) ... and Im just about to the ground/tree stage
Nothing like yours but here's where my progress is (sorry its on FB, but easier for sharing with friends and family) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10200389108513025.2199577.1314885280&type=1&l=e879b4cf18
Again an inspiration and WOW ... just WOW

Well its been quite a while since i posted some pics of the progress. Finally getting around to my final lap, so to say. These last 2 weeks i have spent moving 4 feet sections at a time ,really hitting everything hard with 50/50 and making sure its gonna stay put, adding people and smaller details
Last weekend I spent 12 hours just in the yard with tweezers picking out everything that wasnt black.
Anyway heres the last couple add ins.
Borrowed this guy from the chicken car ,let him get some fresh air until i get an artista figure for here.LOL
Beautiful!
How is the corner coming along where that section of mountain got removed.
Looks Great.

The sand mix around the factory just hardened after 2 days. I am concentrating on the yard area then gonna move to that area next. Looks good there , thanks for the suggestion to put it there.
You can see it in the left top backround of the second picture above
Yep, you clearly are getting to the finer details, and a fine job you are doing, Patrick!
It would be hard to believe that you (or anyone, for that matter) could continue to improve your layout given that it has always looked great, but you definitely are doing so. Beautiful work, which I hope to see again in person, in October.
Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Patrick
Fabulous scenery and detail work, some real craftsmanship !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Alex
Thanks Guys!
I worked on the turntable service area over the weekend. Added two buildings and 4 floodtowers and a few other details
Since the wife took my camera over the weekend didn't get to post any pics . So heres a few new ones.
Thanks for looking!
If you double click on the photo you can get a pretty good size photo
Very Nice!
Just fricken awesome!
I do wanna know when OGR is going to do a feature article and DVD? For those of us who live 3000 miles away, I think a 1 hour video would do...OK maybe 2 hour
Very nice.....great work! Tom
Its been said before but just amazing.
Hi Patrick,
It's just totally amazing, you have great talent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I second what Doug said, LAYOUT FEATURE
Alex
Your layout is just incredible. It's so realistically detailed that after looking at pictures of your layout, I see real tracks and wonder why the third rail is missing from them.
-Alex
continues to amaze!!
Hi Patrick,
Your layout is awesome! Can you please tell me what size curve runs around the back of the roundhouse??

entrance down the shaft leading to the open mining room below
Thanks Patrick Great modeling. Finding a 5 ft coal seam in Western PA was rare. Your coal mine modeling looks very good, also the bee-hive coke ovens. Mike
Hi Patrick,
Wow the entire scene look's simply amazing, you're a very talented modeler
Alex
Patrick! Your stuff looks great! I'd like to see some in progress shots or some "how to's" if you could swing it.
Outstanding photos and work Patrick.
Getting ready to spend the entire winter months attempting to copy the mountains. Hmm it will be interesting to say the least.
Larry
WOW! What a fantastic Job. You have quite the vision, and the ability to bring it to life.
Good stuff!
Very ingenious Patrick - You have an amazingly beautiful layout!
Excellent work, Patrick! Glad to see you are back at it.
The scenes look very realistic, including the not-so-straight sections of track (pictures 12 & 13 of 18) - they remind me of a spur serving a small factory where I worked a few years ago. Neat!
Thanks for posting -
Alex
patrick, the beehive coke ovens look very real, like the ones in Mt pleasant in westmoreland co. There is a bunch of these along route 993 between the main line and 993. NOrth HUntingdon twp. winter you can see them. Ill post up a bing map location. I was going to visit the location for ideas for these things. cool modeling and a fantastic job!
http://coalandcoke.blogspot.co...rks-ardara-pa_5.html
i little blog i found great pics. i am going down this winter. i hoped these would be restored and turned to a park or something. nice history. I may model this area
That's great work, Patrick! Everything is perfect.
Patrick, what is the size of your layout?
Patrick,
Cool man. Looks dirty!
Dave
Patrick, it looks very cool. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks guys , I appreciate it. Come run some trains this winter.
Very nice, Patrick. The coke ovens are between larimer and Ardara--you can't miss them.
Norm
Patrick... For the last 60 minutes went through this whole thread... It's truly amazing and would make an incredible video. I truly hope OGR sees this as a feature for one of its up coming magazines. Thanks for the enjoyment and inspiration.
Steve
Patrick, Thank you for bringing the MTH Consolidation to Monroeville Saturday. I really enjoyed watching it run. Sorry I didn't get to say hello. You just left the layout as I got there around noon to see the Consolidation. When I came back later, you were deep in conversation, then someone else distracted me to look at the S Gaugers/American Flyer layouts, and before I knew it they were closing. A great day!
That is really cool...great work.
Patrick,
Outstanding work as always! Nice to see your progress.
I threw a bunch of pictures and videos i took over the last year together -- shows alot of the buildings and scenes that were created in 2013. For those of you who are interested here are a few pics then a video follows. I learned many tricks from being here on the forum especially from the Sunday showcase... You guys gave me alot of nice comments and kept me motivated. Well anyway ...................
