Guns and MartyE, MartyF

Need Help!  Well it looks like this old engineer has messed up programming the 249 Tin Plate ERR, trying to enter it into his Legacy Cab2 remote control.  Guns got me started but instead of finishing the job correctly I screwed up entering the ERR engine into the Legacy.  Now please understand I own no TMCC engines what so ever, I only have Legacy Engines, that program by module.   I have no idea how to program TMCC  or ERR into the Legacy Cab2.   Read the Legacy directions, did not help me a bit.  Would somebody please write out in engineering steps, the directions I need to follow to enter the ERR 249 into my Legacy Cab2  Hand held remote Control.  I will then print them out and follow them exactly.

Got to admit this has me stumped, and I would very much like to run my ERR controlled 249 Engine & Tender.  Legacy is suppose to be simple, I must be getting really old.

Thanks much for the help.

Go to program on the program/run switch. Turn on the track power. Having the base and cab2 turned on, press ENG and press the address you want for the engine, like 49 if it's available, press set. In the ERR instructions there are some options as to setting what kind of engine. Continuing having those options in front of you, press AUX1 and then press 4. Turn off the power.

Move the program/run switch to run.

Turn on the track power.

Leaving the Speed Step set to factory default, go on to Motor Type and press:

AUX1, 0, AUX1, 2 for large motor. For small motor, replace 2 with a 1.

Then press info on the CAB2 and the button under NAME. Type in a name. You will probably have to do this for a time figuring out how to add a space, go back, etc. until you get it right. Then press next and type in the road number 249. Then rotate the red wheel to STM (assuming it is steam engine), press that button, rotate to TMCC, press that, rotate to RS5, press that.

Then press CTC and run the engine noting that the name, etc. is right.

The engine just sits there now with no lights on when there is power to the tracks, but it has sound, I can't seem to get the R100 section to come up again either.  Guns please help me and write out from the beginning exactly what I need to do, to program this ERR into the Cab2 correctly so she will operate.  I could never get a new number set. What ever I did shut the lights and movement off, and made a mess out of things.

Chuck I have no ERR instructions to go to, I will program as you directed but use the R100.

Don't want to sidetrack this discussion but can I ask Dave a couple questions about this 249.  1) your reason for converting from MTH?  2) do you lose all of the proto-sounds when you do this?  I'm assuming you do but....  I'm thinking of going all TMCC/Legacy but I have the Christmas passenger (5505) tinplate set and I really like it; would love to have it running under Legacy but retaining all of its unique sounds.

Thanks, Ron

BTW, Dave, I finally have a very crude carpet layout running in that "train room" that my wife allocated to me in the new house.  :-)

Ron L,

This engine is an original Conventional Lionel 249 Tin Plate, no MTH, Guns installed the ERR that I chose for it.  I just need to understand how to program the ERR into the Cab2, never had a problem like this in my engineering life.

Glad to hear you have the Carpet Layout going, maybe she will let you keep that room as a permanent train room and you can get your layout up on a stable platform!

Ron, the engine was a conventional model with an E-Unit, not an MTH.

Dave,

  • Place engine on tracks, PGM/RUN switch to PGM mode.
  • Power up the track.
  • Press ENG.
  • Press ## for the TMCC number desired.
  • Press SET
  • Press AUX
  • Press 4
  • Turn off the track power.
  • PGM/RUN switch to RUN mode.

Engine is now programmed for the correct TMCC number and engine type, next we'll configure the CAB2 for running this engine.

  • Press ENG, then ## to select the newly programmed engine.
  • Press INFO
  • Press Scroll
  • Select STM
  • Press Scroll
  • Select R100
  • Press INFO

Run your train.

Note:  ## in the instructions indicates the one or two digit TMCC ID you wish to set the engine to, they can be from 01 to 98.

If the lights are still off, press AUX2 after doing all the above steps and the lights will come back on.

Chuck, this isn't a Cruise Commander as it's an AC motor, no small/large motor setting.  I also recommend R100 for ERR stuff as it gives you much smoother operation.  Dave had it running as Engine #1, he just didn't remember the instructions after setting a new number.

Oh sorry. I should have asked what it was.

John,

Thank you sir so much,  just returned from dinner and will program the engine tomorrow, have 3 other things to accomplish on the Honey due Christmas list tonight!  I appreciate your help very very much!  One other question the Switch on the Tender is not marked for Run & Program, which way is which, do you remember how you put it in the Tender, I want to mark it.

Dave,

Thanks for the info.  I clearly misunderstood what 249 you were referring to.

As for the "train room", it IS permanent.  I have a signed land grant from the boss.  So over the next many months I'll be looking to come up with a design that will be a suitable permanent layout.  I'm not good at this kind of concept work so will be coming to the forum and, maybe, some of the North Penn OGaugers, like John, for help.

All the best, keep those pics coming.
