Although I have experienced but a couple of minor problems recently, which I will post on a separate thread, my Legacy System has worked essentially trouble free for the last four plus years.

I have the original Legacy base/charger with the remote; and also an additional remote (Cab-2) with charger only 6-14294 (Base #994), which I bought shortly after the Legacy system.

The original base charging operation quit working early on, I read about it, and instead of returning it to Lionel for repair, I replaced the original rechargeable batteries with Lithium batteries, which seem to last forever. The second charger-only base had continued to work fine since December 2011.

Today, for the first time, I notice that the charging lights were not lit up on the #994 base. I checked the voltage output of the power supply, and it was 8vAC, as it is supposed to be, The voltages at the three charging contacts, however, measured only 1.2vDC across the first and third, and second and third contacts. The original system base, the one I do not use, measures 9.9vDC across these contacts.

I removed the base bottom, but cannot see anything obviously bad. I was going to remove the small PCB, and undid the two screws that hold it place, but cannot figure out how to remove or detach the charging jack that keeps it from coming out.

Also, in the process of disassembling the base, two plastic parts that look like some sort of mounts with slotted rockers, fell off and I have no idea where they belong. And the heat sink is loose.

If you have any idea regarding the problem (insufficient voltage at charging contacts),

or how to remove the PCB (how to get past the charging jack),

or where the two plastic parts belong, I would appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Alex (Alexander Müller)

Hi John,

I had to smile about the plastic gizmos falling out, that's been posted before.

I suspected that, but couldn't not find those threads. Not so funny (for me) is that I still don't know where they go!  Does anyone have a picture that shows how these gizmos are mounted?

My bases are #993 and #994, and #993 is the one that failed early on. Since it was the only one I had at the time, I opted for the Lithium batteries, and so far so good after several years. I don't remember for sure, but I believe I have changed those batteries only once.

In the meantime, I put in three Energizer Lithium batteries in the second remote, and I am back in business with two remotes, albeit non-chargeable.

Thanks!

Alex

I had to have my 990 base repaired a few years ago during the rash of charging errors. As soon as it came back from lionel I put electrical tape over the charging contacts and made the switch to Lithium AA's.

I don't run enough to deal with the charging hassle. I don't leave my stuff plugged in when I'm not running and it doesn't chew through Lithiums very fast.

John,

Got it! I thought that the 'screens' were the two plastic signs that read 'Lionel' on either side of the base, and which do tend to separate form the base sides. I had not even noticed the wire screens (vents) that the gizmos actually hold. OK now.

Any suggestions on how to detach the Charging Jack so I can remove the PCB? I am not going to spend a lot of time on this since I already have the Lithium-solution in place; but it bugs me not to be able to at least give the PCB a cursory going over.

THANKS!

Alex

Gentlemen,

Lionel repaired my 990 base shortly after I got it and it has worked perfectly ever sense, I want the 990 base charging unit to operate as engineered and it does, I also have 2 up graded DCS hand held remotes that are fully rechargeable, thanks to Willgee (Bill Ingraham) here on the OGR.   When you pay for good engineering it should work properly.  Lionel stands behind their product, and my Legacy works perfectly.  Why would anybody pay for recharging technology, and then not use it, have it fixed and use the engineering.  I do think Guns has a great idea about adding a small fan to the 990 Base Unit however.  My Legacy 990 base unit actually set up about 1 1/2" on the front edge of my roll away power station, and because of the constant air flow never really get  very hot, warm yes hot no.

OK...

First of all there are two screws holding the board, one on the side of the heat sink (might be under the sink depending on where it is swiveled) and one on the far side of the board. Once those are out, tip up the bottom of the board farthest away from the power jack and it falls out easily. No glue.

Pictures...see the little tabs that are holding the jack in place...
