Lionel 1661 33 Loco pickup shoes - upgrade to roller pickup ?

There isn't a direct replacement - however, my experience with these style collectors does not warrant seeking a replacement roller style. These shoes are easy enough to replace as is.

If you really wanted to change things up, you would have to replace the whole collector fiber board. It LOOKS like a 2036-112 may drop right in, but I have not personally done this.

Again, bottom line, it is just so easy and inexpensive to replace the shoes that I would just do that.

A roller style pick-up like 2036-112 will not fit easily. The slider fiber plate (1668) is longer and the shorter 2036-118 has the mounting tangs in completely different spots

I was initially referencing a 1681 style collector as the possible initial collector fiber board. Chuck is correct that the 1688 Collector is somewhat different. Just for reference, here are pictures of the collector plates in the discussion thus far.

You need the roller pickup from the 203 switcher, and 204 and 229 prewar locos.  It was a roller but mounted in the same pickup as the slider plate you picture

@Dennis Holler, It looks like the 229-6/229-M7/229-M8 roller you have pictured may work and is a lot simpler than replacing the fiber board. The availability isn't as prevalent as the 1661-33 and it cost a bit more, but sounds just like what @Chriss is looking for.

Just a thought, but wouldn't a 2034 type roller fit in and snap in place???

@Martin Derouin, the 2036-122 used on the 2034 Locomotive is not a direct replacement. Notice the difference in the fiber boards above - the 2036-119 has lengthwise slots to accommodate the "gussets" present on the 2036-122 roller.

You would also need to order a 229-M8 roller to go in each 229-M7 assembly - an additional .75¢ each from Jeff Kane at the Train Tender.

I'm sorry I have trouble  finding there 229-M8 roller and  229-M7 assembly.
Which part list i should check to find it?

I have not. It is my impression that there are clearance issues.

No one in this post has claimed to have tried any of the suggestions within with or without success and I would hope that @Chriss understands that fact and reports his findings should he try.

I have some of those brackets. If I have a moment, I will look for them later.

229-M8 and  229-M7 arrived today
This is how it ended up with a little help of dremmel tool (see pics)
All works like a charm. 
Tons of thx for your help.

BTW
229-M7 bracket already contains a roller.
No need to order rollers separately unless you need extra spare ones.

Hi @Chriss.  Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but did you ever get this loco running?  What motor did you use?  Looks like a solid job!

This specific loco is still on my bench and is pending DC conversion.
I got the other loco one running with this motor ( see url below).
The motor models is Mabuchi RF500 and conversion idea is the same, just different pinion gear to be used.
