I have a Lionel Big Boy that when going down a grade (about 4.5%) produces a very noticeable clicking sound (sort of like gears mashing??).

The speed control works well in keeping the engine from running away but I was wondering if this is a normal sound or does it need to be lubricated or sent in for service?

It happens all of the time and even when there are no cars behind it.
Thanks.

Thing only experience I've had that is "remotely" similar is my legacy m1b was making a slight clicking going around the layout when it was new.I put a couple drops of oil on the universal joint between the motor and the gearbox and the problem was eliminated.

The engine was expensive and is huge so I have been hesitant to opening it up (I normally don't have any problems taking things apart and fixing them). I guess I will have to give it a try.
Thanks.
