Hey trainers,
I'm thinking about getting one of the Legacy 2-6-6-2 engines. The prices are looking good. Anyone have comments on this engine? Any bad out of the box issues? Lionel number #6-11321 and similar ilk.
thanks!

They are pretty nice engines. Nice sound, nice running.

swise,
I have the 6-11299. All features worked perfectly, out of the box. Great sound, smoke and whistle steam. Get one. You will like it.

The 6-11321 is the one I bought a couple of weeks from Charles Ro, at $800 I figured at that price I could not go wrong. And they still have them listed for $800.
Wholesale Trains still has them for $750!

I have two, i like both.

Paul, great buy... and you did no wrong! The fact that a few places are now selling them for $750? Big deal. Don't look back. Lotta folks here will skirmish the internet high and low just to save a few $$$ here and there. I'm always happy to purchase from Charlie. They may not always have the cheapest price on everything, but I think we've all learned there's a reason for that. Just be happy that you didn't pay $1,100+ for one several weeks ago only to see them go on sale now!!!
As for the Mallets still being widely available, and still on sale at Charlie's site too... that just proves that the market is SO saturated with stuff, we STILL can't buy everything even when great sales come along. I have some $$$ set aside for the 4-12-2 due this month, and I've been quietly building my collection of 18" Lionel passenger sets. Don't need to convince folks here that these jewels add up quickly... so I passed on the Mallet (for now) despite the great sales. There's only so much room... and limited funds, regardless of the glut of stuff in the market creating great buying opportunies.

I just ordered one! Thanks all for the feedback.

David, I see you are look at the 4-12-2, right after I bought the mallet I picked up the 4-12-2 greyhound. Which I wound up buying it from my LHS (modeltrainstuff) since I did not see many of them still around and they had 1. With Lionel's changing shipping list and dropped items that made these 2 engines go back on my want it list. I was expecting a ton of stuff coming from Charlie this month but now I'm only waiting for a half of ton. The Lord does work in mysterious ways or I would have had my mallet months ago at a higher $$$.
I think all the Lionel Legacy System engines are amazing. I would like to have the new Norfolk and Western J coming out in February 2013. I hope you can get the mallet. Merry Christmas.
I like mine a lot. I run my 3751/3759 Northerns more because the Mallet is bigger and has much more front overhang on curves. But size has its own advantages -- it is an impressive machine, and a sweet looking, running, and sounding loco . . .
Love the USRA Light Mallet - in TMCC or later.
I have one apart on my workbench right now - a Legacy version that I got for half (literally) the current -sale- prices because it was dropped off a loading dock, or something. Must be tough; damaged but runs just fine - even the steaming whistle. I'm repairing/changing it ( I had to put some of it back together anyway, so why not a little freelancing?).
Lots of wires in that boiler. Just to be sure where the boiler screws were, I checked in the
manual - and they don't tell you! So I checked the manual for my "old" TMCC
version, where they show the screw locations (only 4, anyway). A Legacy thing,
ya think? Uh-huh.
Next to the J3a Hudson, my favorite Lionel loco.
I picked one up just when they went down to about $800. I had been eyeing one for a while. It was my first "whistle steam" loco and I am very impressed. Runs well in conventional and is quite a sight coming around a curve at low speed.
I didn't have any problems. It has run well right out of the box.
I'd recommend getting one if you have the space, desire, and the funds. I'm really glad I got mine.
Just wanted to happily post to this happy thread (I like threads that are enthusiastic about trains; just came from reading a "problem" thread - bummer) that I lost my will power and ordered the USRA on Saturday. Can't wait to get it!

Well, it may prove the market is saturated with mallets and SF Northerns, at any rate. However, and unfortunately, the market doesn't appear to be saturated with anything on my "want" list.
