Paul, great buy... and you did no wrong!  The fact that a few places are now selling them for $750?  Big deal.  Don't look back.  Lotta folks here will skirmish the internet high and low just to save a few $$$ here and there.  I'm always happy to purchase from Charlie.  They may not always have the cheapest price on everything, but I think we've all learned there's a reason for that.  Just be happy that you didn't pay $1,100+ for one several weeks ago only to see them go on sale now!!!

As for the Mallets still being widely available, and still on sale at Charlie's site too... that just proves that the market is SO saturated with stuff, we STILL can't buy everything even when great sales come along.  I have some $$$ set aside for the 4-12-2 due this month, and I've been quietly building my collection of 18" Lionel passenger sets.  Don't need to convince folks here that these jewels add up quickly... so I passed on the Mallet (for now) despite the great sales.  There's only so much room... and limited funds, regardless of the glut of stuff in the market creating great buying opportunies.

David, I see you are look at the 4-12-2, right after I bought the mallet I picked up the 4-12-2 greyhound. Which I wound up buying it from my LHS (modeltrainstuff) since I did not see many of them still around and they had 1. With Lionel's changing shipping list and dropped items that made these 2 engines go back on my want it list. I was expecting a ton of stuff coming from Charlie this month but now I'm only waiting for a half of ton. The Lord does work in mysterious ways or I would have had my mallet months ago at a higher $$$.

Love the USRA Light Mallet - in TMCC or later.

I have one apart on my workbench right now - a Legacy version that I got for half (literally) the current -sale- prices because it was dropped off a loading dock, or something. Must be tough; damaged but runs just fine - even the steaming whistle. I'm repairing/changing it ( I had to put some of it back together anyway, so why not a little freelancing?).

Lots of wires in that boiler. Just to be sure where the boiler screws were, I checked in the

manual - and they don't tell you! So I checked the manual for my "old" TMCC

version, where they show the screw locations (only 4, anyway). A Legacy thing,

ya think? Uh-huh.

Next to the J3a Hudson, my favorite Lionel loco.

I picked one up just when they went down to about $800. I had been eyeing one for a while. It was my first "whistle steam" loco and I am very impressed. Runs well in conventional and is quite a sight coming around a curve at low speed.

I didn't have any problems. It has run well right out of the box.

I'd recommend getting one if you have the space, desire, and the funds. I'm really glad I got mine.

Well, it may prove the market is saturated with mallets and SF Northerns, at any rate. However, and unfortunately, the market doesn't appear to be saturated with anything on my "want" list.
