I have a Lionel single A Centipede unit that suddenly lost the engine sounds, only the engine sounds and the start up engine sounds. The bell, horn, crew talk sound ok from the Legacy remote. Here is the strange thing, the engine sounds WORK in conventional mode!!! I reloaded the module in the remote and checked the engine parameter as being Legacy, Diesel and legacy sound, all is OK. Still no engine sounds in legacy mode(other sounds ok), but only in conventional mode I get full sounds...May be need a factory reset like DCS? I can't find an "engine reset" in Legacy mode only the reset soft key on the keypad and that did not solve the problem.

Lionel model #6-34680 A unit Centipede

Power: Z-4000 at 18 VAC

Legacy command v1.3

MTH Realtrax 12 foot long straight track, no loops.

This problem happens only with this loco. Originally it worked and sounded as it should but suddenly this issue appeared...

Any help is appreciated.

Timing is everything! I just lost the sound on my new (6 mo old)  Legacy ES44 yesterday. All sounds.  I did a search here, and found this from 2012:

Address the loco, blow the horn, DO NOT press AUX1, then press and hold the volume up icon on touchpad. If sounds do not come up to full volume we will be having our hands on it soon! Thanks, Mike Lionel

Went downstairs and tried it, and darned if it didn't work!

Was running under MTH Z-4000 when it happened, got corrected under my old postwar ZW. Both with Legacy Base units and Cab2.

Can anyone say what happens and why does this work?

Cool, will try it right now...Cheers Bill!

EDIT: I tried it, no joy....I turned off everything and waited a few mins and then turned them back on, same thing. I do not get diesel engine sounds, no breaks, no acc decel form engine sounds. All other sounds and controls working as normal.  Back to Conven mode, and sounds magically re appear

Try pressing AUX1, UP, AUX1, UP, etc.  That should bring up just the engine sounds.

EDIT:  FYI, RS5 and beyond have two volume settings, the master volume and the background sounds.  As you can surmise, the background sounds are changed with the AUX1 preceding the volume keys, the master volume is just the volume keys.

Sorry it didn't work for you. Let us know if the other suggestions work.  So far mine is still working....

Thanks for that information on the two volume levels, gunrunnerjohn. Another thing I did not know!

Has anyone suggested you write a "Legacy O Gauge Companion" book like Barry Broskowitz did for DCS?

I am not sure what I did, but I did a lot of resetting and turning off/on of all the equipment AND re load the loco module. BUT, I also did what John recommended...Now I have full sound in command and conventional mode...Thx a bunch to everyone especially John...Now I will fix the horrible wobble w/o sending it to Lionel...

I have modified the title accordingly...Cheers guys!

Thx again John.

I also noticed that in Legacy units that I own, the pot in the tender/boiler has an effect on the sound up/down even though the loco is under Legacy control, unlike MTH DCS where the volume/smoke pots have no effect when running DCS!

Thx Marty, I did try that and it did not work.

I wish Legacy had a "factory reset" like DCS has, or do they?

Also, how does one delete a Legacy loco from the remote? I read the Legacy book and did not find "delete loco" or such. I did find how to modify the different parameters such as TMCC, Legacy, Diesel, steam and so on....

I have a Mac. Does one need LSU to clear/delete an engine from the Legacy base?

Is this the only way to completely delete an engine?

Using the CLR soft key on the remote, does it reset engine to factory settings? I just want to confirm.

If you clear the engine out of the Legacy base (using the remote CLR key), it does nothing to the locomotive, it strictly removes it from the base.  Most TMCC/Legacy engines accomplish a "reset" by reprogramming their TMCC ID, and then some have an extra AUX1-# to configure them to the factory defaults.  This AUX1-# sequence varies based on specific locomotives, you should consult the manual for the particular product.

From the manual for the Legacy Centipede...

Reprogramming your locomotive to restore features

If your locomotive is unresponsive to your commands in the Command Control environment, we recommend that you follow this procedure to reset your locomotive. All factory default settings will be restored when you reprogram the locomotive.

1. Slide the program run switch to the PGM position.
2. Plug in and connect your LEGACY Base or TMCC Command Base.
3. Place your locomotive on the track, then power up the track.
4. Press ENG and enter the locomotive’s ID#.
5. Press SET.
6. Turn off track power and wait ten seconds.
7. Slide the program run switch back to the RUN position.

At this point, your locomotive has been reset. Restore power to the track and operate the locomotive as usual. Be sure to use the ID# entered in Step 4.
