I bumped into an eBay listing for what appeared to be a 3rd Rail N&W K3 w/ a Y3 tender. The description was that it was a 1 of 1 (scratch built) custom for a NS executive. I emailed the seller and included a link to the original 3rd Rail listing for the K3. I received a response insisting that this was indeed a 100% custom built by Mainline Models in Texas, and not built by 3rd Rail.  I had never heard of this company, nor had I seen them mentioned here.

Is anyone familiar with Mainline Models? Do they indeed build custom scratch built brass locomotives? I thought it would be of interest if indeed this were true. Perhaps this would be an alternative source for a scale correct N&W S1a tender.

I hit their website. It looked to me like maybe they do custom repaints of MTH/Lionel etc. and then put them on a display base w/ a plaque and Plexiglas cover.

This sounds like the same seller who has listed a "Virginian" 2-6-6-6 coupled to a "Norfolk and Western" tender, describing it as a one-of-a-kind model built for presentation to a person associated with NS. The seller claimed that Virginian had "refused" the locomotive and that it went subsequently to N&W, which isn't so. Emails back and forth with the seller were unhelpful. I pointed out that the engines were built by Lima rather than Alco, and I think that part of the listing did get corrected. Thanks for the mention of Mainline Models: their website appears to show custom-decorated production models. It's hard to believe there is a large commercial custom-builder or importer of O-scale models that no one has heard of before.

Thanks, guys. That confirms what I suspected. I had done the same thing as B Smith, and received a similar response. I have a Sunset Models K3 and I thought I recognized the model. As for the website, it did not answer my original question.

Here's my K3 after its PS2 upgrade. Let's call this one a wrap and not beat it to death.
