I sure hope someone can help me because I've exhausted a bunch of web searches with no luck. Ironically, most of the searches took me to the OGR forum, which is a great reflection on OGR! I soon will be receiving a 1991 Weaver Gold Edition E8 AA set. There isn't an item # on any of the boxes I've seen on the net, but they are the Union Pacifics if that helps. From what I've read the motors don't have flywheels, therefore jack rabbit starts and stop on a dime behaviors. I can't find any info on what the Gold series is about other than the engines being scale and limited production. Are there are other amenities with this series? Please correct me if any of the information is wrong so far

The seller does not have the manual and I can't find anything on the net. Does anyone have one they can scan and email me? That would be very helpful

I think the only sounds are bell and horn with QSI electronics, would that be correct?

I guess at some point Weaver switched to flywheel motors, but probably not in the 1991 model year.

Finally, does anyone know where I can find a diagram on how to wire the motors in series. Again, I read doing so will help tame motor behavior to some degree.

With all this, I still purchased these because they are in my price range these days, so I won't be upgrading motors or boards anytime soon!

Thanks...Rich

I had these when they were first issued and they certainly are beauties!  MTH took over the production of these Weaver models eventually but you are correct in that a second run did have flywheels. All I had to operate mine with was an original ZW and I had to be careful when engaging the throttle as well as stopping due to the sudden loss of power.

There are many newer transformer options out there now some with much lower starting voltages that the 6v-8v we had then.

Rich:  Just for your info, Weaver sold the tooling for those E-8's to MTH, quite a few years ago.  So some items may still be available if needed, some time.  Timko could replace those motors with newer can motors, with flywheels,  for a reasonable price.  Can't promise this but he might be able to fit your motors with flywheels, if they have a shaft extended out the top.   With flywheels, you'd be able to add TMCC control, at a later date if you so desired.

Good luck with your new purchase.

Rich,

I have the NYC  Weaver version of this E8 Locomotive, no flywheels on the DC can motors as purchased, I replaced the motors with equivalent flywheel equipped motors from Frank Timko and added the E8 sound system from Dave Ott. I know I have the Weaver instructions and should be able to e-mail them tomorrow to you. Frank's company is now Timko Repair Depot, he is on the web  there was no problem in changing out the motors, minor soldering motor contacts, also OTT has been out of business many years.
