It's a UP fans dream...  lots of UP goodies... new tooling...  gonna be a great catalog!

What is new?

nothing new just new paint jobs

The Kenefick and Lonestar cars for starters on new tooling. The vision domes are "new."

City of Portland clearly called out as new tooling...  Harriman UP Vista Domes are called out as NEW TOOLING, but it could be referring to the buisness car in the two pack...

No, thats it. And no notes about more coming in the 2020 catalog... so I guess proceed at your own risk about getting the rest of the train.

You are not READING the catalog.  This page clearly says:  "paint schemes match existing and UPCOMING Lionel 21" passenger car sets".

So this is a NOTE about upcoming sets matching these cars.  These are Vista vision wifi camera video vista domes...

I can read it just fine. If you compare it to some of the previous "notes" Lionel has put in the catalog (including this one which specifically mentions UP1111 coming on a special flyer), the statement that it matches "upcoming" 21" passenger car sets is about as close to that CYA disclaimer inside the back cover as you can get. Upcoming could be next catalog of 3 years from now, who knows. And with all of these "expansion sets" that seem to keep appearing in subsequent catalogs, why buy a single car and hope for a set, when you'll probably be able to buy the set and then a bunch of expansion packs?

As far as the Auto Train is concerned, a set of passenger cars is useless without the auto racks (need new tooling) and the U36Bs (new tooling again). So, like i said, proceed at your own risk dropping $300 on a car that may or may not ever see a full train to go with it.

?  But Lionel IS making the UP #1111.  And it will be in a special. ? Confirmed it today with Lionel...

You said no mention of future matching pass cars.  Clearly there is...  if demand is there they could do the rest...

I like your enthusiasm Bob. Honestly, though I was hoping for something more unique. Northern Pacific 4-8-4 would have been nice. Use the coal tender from the FEF. Put the s3 pilot on it and you are close to a class A4. Give it a grey boiler jacket... now your talking.

Also for the sake of discussion., I believe we are ready for a newly tooled scale steam locomotive. A class PRR I1 would be great !

I know Lionel has big plans...  they are doing great hybrids...  i would think they could do new steam more accurately with hybrids...  they just gave us new 19th century steamers...

I would like to see some more hybrids...

I just got into O at the end of 2017.  When I told people I went to that store and the owner said he's retiring, they would laugh and say the same thing: "He always says that!" (Super O Bob said the same).  So I wanted him to know that it's finally, actually happening.

I seriously doubt this is to send folks scrambling to their LHS to get a "sneak peak.".  Fewer and fewer people have access to a LHS nowadays.  It's also interesting that the photo's of the catalog pages or product/price listings haven't been struck down like they were for V1.

All the catalog release does is create product buzz for an additional two weeks before the catalog goes online.  Products aren't going to get here any faster.

I'd be willing to bet Lionel's own store in the Concord Mall began offering the catalogs last Friday...

Rusty

A CNJ 4-6-6T? First of all they didn’t exist in that configuration and at $1100 no less!!! The least Lionel could have done was make the proper 4-6-4T config and proper feed water heater. Correct bell location would be nice too.  These are all easy changes using existing parts. K-Line units will now come down in price. I’ll just buy one of them, make the changes needed and save +$600!

Picked up the catalog at a local store today, now realize that the 3 dome cars I was wanting are all camera dome cars and $329 each. No thanks!!!! I have no desire to have camera equipped everything.  I have 2 camera inspection cars already that I do not use the camera feature.  Lionel needs to offer the domes without cameras!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to look at the videos online of the new catalog.  I even started playing it as far as the first few pages and then turned it off. Maybe I'm weird, but I prefer to wait to get the catalog in my hands.  I remember the days when Christmas was nearing and you got the Sears wish book in the mail. There was nothing greater than sitting down and thumbing through that book for hours. While admittedly I don't have much desire for most Lionel products nowadays, there are occasional things that do catch my interest and I will end up purchasing. To me waiting for the catalog to arrive, and when it does, brewing a nice cup of coffee and sitting in the easy chair viewing it brings back that feeling and memories of when I was a kid and the Sears wish book!

I think these are the combine and observation that they offered a few years back with the four car set the did. The four car set shipped long ago but I don’t think these two cars ever did.

I spoke to my dealer on these cars. Lionel had these as a 2-pack in the 2017 catalog. Customers were mad that they had to buy a 2-pack in order to get the observation car. The 4 pack never had the observation car. Lionel is now offering each car as separate sale instead of a 2 pack.

Dome Coach -- 1 car

Number
Notes and Disposition
WAB 203to Norfolk & Western 1613, to Southern 1613, to Quebec North Shore & Labrador

Wabash 203 was built in November 1958 at the same time as UP 7011-7015, which were themselves the last dome cars built for Union Pacific. Wabash 203, and UP 7011-7015, were initially assigned to City of St. Louis service, with Wabash 203 being in full UP yellow and gray colors, but with its Wabash name spelled out in UP's distinctive red lettering.

Wabash was leased to N&W in 1964, and the car became N&W 1613 in March 1966. The car remained in UP colors, with Norfolk & Western spelled out, until it was repainted to N&W's Blue and Aluminum colors upon the cancellation of the City of St. Louis pool in (?). Sold to Central of Georgia 1613 in 1970, to Southern 1613 in 1971 after Amtrak brought an end to Central of Georgia's passenger service. Car sold during 1979 to Quebec North Shore & Labrador; repainted boxcar brown as QNS&L 13510; repainted in 1993 into a new silver and red scheme.

A surprising amount of HO in this catalog. I am surprised that Lionel is jumping into HO again as big as they are. Both previous attempts (1950s and 1970s) failed. Maybe the third time is the charm?

Well, HO is where brand loyalty isn't as prevalent as it is in O.  Given there are already well established product offerings for all interests it will be interesting to see if Lionel can gain a foothold.

It's interesting that according to the catalog description, the HO Berks are being upgraded to "prototypical pilot and front end details and additional boiler details and separate handrails."  Guess Lionel figured out that a relettered Polar Express basic Berk isn't going to cut it in the competitive HO world.  Wonder if it will also get full valve gear.

Most of the freight cars are descended from old Marx tooling that Model Power owned.  The have basic detailing that won't attract the serious HO modeler.  The Pennsy style caboose is ex-Model Power and the Harriman passenger cars are ex-Model Power knock-offs of MDC cars.

Ok I have a question about the showing of the up excursion cars. I see that there is a 3 pack and then a 4 pack. Both have the same price tag, but there is one car less I the 3 pack. What’s up? Also, when I looked in the Norfolk and western passenger cars the 4 pack is priced higher than the up 4 pack. Again what’s up? Finally, why did Lionel not show all of the cars in the packs like the Norfolk and western cars? Hope y’all can help.

One thing I noticed is that on the list of feature icons on the top of the page that the Bluetooth icon is first and not the Legacy icon anymore.  It rather speaks to the direction Lionel is going, which makes me sad.  Trying to run trains with my phone and BT has been nothing short of frustrating, but I know when I pick up the Cab 2 (Or even the Cab-1) I know I'm in for a pleasant operating session.

Same. What bothers me is the fact that the RTR train sets don't have the TMCC feature. If I was just starting out and purchased a set then got a legacy remote and engine. I'd want to use the legacy remote to run that train. Yes, LC+2.0 gives you that option but why isn't it on a RTR set, the typical starting point in the hobby. If Lionel wants a seamless transition between train set and legacy, this certainly doesn't do it. Unless Lionel is planning to make a Cab-3 with Bluetooth that would allow both to run on the same remote as everything else but what do I know.

20190712_015859~01I ordered the F7 Great Northern / BN A-A pair.  Thats all folks.

I was going to order 3 or 4 dome cars and a box car but I am not paying for cameras I DO NOT WANT.  I also do not want the sounds in a box car, diner, or any other item Lionel adds a $10 camera in so they can charge locomotive prices for one plastic passenger car.  Really annoys me!!!

Cheaper to keep having Christine custom paint previously made sets.

Anyone please feel free to correct me.  I believe 4014 did not have the componentry a to heat passenger cars, therefore it was used for freight use. As far as the experience car, I think you’re referring to excursion, correct? If between those two sets of cars, excursion or Challenger you may want to look at some threads or topics describing the differences between the two. I take it from what I’ve read, that the challengers are done better.   If you stay prototypical, freight cars. You can purchase them one or two at a time and that will help your budget.

Thanks for your thoughts. Yes I am talking about the excursion car sets and the special baggage car. The baggage car is the special car that UP turned into a moving history museum. They took to Ogden and I was able to see it. I already have a good collection of pfe reefers so freight cars for my big boy are done.

Those are on my list as well along with the two B units. Do you know if they were run like that in a AA prototypical fashion. I can find pictures of both, but not in an AA together.

It's a small picture, but:

Scott...  sweet choice...

I think only one UP vista dome has a camera...  the others in FT set and 2packs appear to not have cameras.

I would think a guy with your handle would be all about watching the layout from a model vistadome!

Bob,

 The individual Southern, auto-train, Amtrak, and N&W in UP paint are camera cars.  I think Lionel should offer a choice on camera or no camera.  I haven't even tried out the camera track inspection theater car yet.

Scott

Hi Scott...  well you are probably in luck.  They do say these are intended to match upcoming sets.  If they keep with the passenger train pattern, there would likely be domes in the regular sets (if these trains had them)...  and those probably will not have cameras...

I have been reading up on the autotrain.  That would be an amazing set!

OK, what's with the N&W dome car in UP livery? I must have missed the memo on that paint scheme.

ShellScale Decals has a decal set for it!

I had seen that, but it left me scratching my head. Other than locomotives and the occasional boxcars, I really don't recall seeing much Armor Yellow in Roanoke. Certainly no passenger cars.

On page 103 they have "POWER & CONTROL". But it only shows transformers and powerhouses. NO Legacy or other control items ???????  Are they not going to be selling Legacy in the future with all of it's controls?

But I will buy the George Bush Funeral train and also the FRISCO #4524 Steam and Tender.

Certainly they will. Just not needed showing in this catalog.

I may have to spring for the LC+ 2.0 Docside Switcher, $249 MSRP for all the features is a really good price!  I see the PRR one in my future!   I'm eager to see how well all this is supported for that price, I hope to be impressed!

I also was really impressed...  lots of fun for great price...  i am thinking rio grande...

I see that once again Lionel missed the party with the Shark Fin car. Should have been painted up in Jimmy Buffett "Fins" and with sound playing the song!

~~~~^~~~~^~~~~^~~~~^~~~~
And add another 100.00 to the price.
And the kids they are trying to aim it at would all know/care who Jimmy Buffett is, right?  (I'm thinking no).
Given the amount of shark attacks in the news recently, maybe Lionel should have come out with a Human Research & Rescue Set...
I'm thinking you would be shark bite wrong! It's unbelievable how popular Jimmy is and those kids have Parrothead parents!
