I bought a new 16 year old “Norfolk & western 2200“, runs and sounds GREAT but, the tires were hard as a rock. 3 of them came off the first time I ran it. I installed 4 new tires. The front set was fairly easy, the rear set under the cab was a struggle, I got it done and tested the locomotive on my track, ran well except the chuffing disappeared.  Crew talk and the tower talk work. Is it possible that I messed up the timing or something?

There is a chuff switch that can, and will fail. I just replaced mine. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that just changing traction tires had nothing to do with the chuff switch failing (unless you removed the boiler shell). In that case it's possible that you might have pulled a wire loose.
