Yes, hands down the MTH Niagara ( mechanically speaking ) is literally built like a battle tank,……my opinion, and mine alone, the CCII Niagara that Lionel produced is the biggest bucket of bolts they ever let grace a catalog, …..now, when guys like Alex M, Pete, and now Lou, ( who’s a veteran of that misery now) take and upgrade those engines, they are good models, but when purchasing one, you have to take into account not only electronics upgrades, but also mechanical repairs,…..

Pat

Yeah, Alex did the good work on my CCII Niagara. Only thing that stayed the same was the sound that was in it. The market has quite a bit of them out there, mostly high prices. I think the cheapest(non-bid) was in the $600's. Some still list over $800 or more. Lowest bid I think I saw was around $300-400 which did go for quite a bit when I watched regularly. I haven't seen a bidding one in some time.

While the MTH Niagaras have a bullletproof drivetrain, the one weak item is the feedwater pump. Like Lionel’s cab apron, its diecast and not well supported. Its easily broken in handling. It can be repaired with one from Precision Scale though.

As for the single headlight, all the S1bs were built about the same time with the single headlight. No need to change the cab number when back dating them. You might want to change bell location though as that was changed when the horn was added.

Wow, I actually got something right on an engine that I only know a few scarce details on, like water, coal, engine, tender. I sort of wondered what that was on some other models, couldn't tell you what ones because I think some that I have seen don't have it modeled on the engine or in that place. Thanks Pete.

Yeah, if you blow up the picture of my 6025, my water pump is broken off and missing in action too,…..Pete is correct, that pump is MTH’s Achilles heel….

Pat

Sure looks like it counts. I see the initials, what all else does it say on it?

This is a Dietz Vesta lantern and is noted on the top.  The other lettering not shown in the photo is various patent dates between 1920 and 1942.  There is no other lettering on it other than someone scratched "CPK" on it which I assume was its owner at one time?  Two NYC lanterns were in the last TCA Desert Division Auction.  The other one had a clear globe, but had "New York Central System" embossed in the glass.  I did not win that bid, but have always wanted a red lantern.  My dad collected them in the late 60's when they were very affordable, but he does not have a NYC one.  As a child, he used to light them in the evenings when we were sitting out on the porch.

It does have N.Y.C.S on it though. Cool story as well, thanks for sharing that.

There should be a faint serial number on it, as well.  Hopefully, starting with an "S", for Syracuse.

I'll grab a picture of mine when I get home...

Thanks!

This lovely arrived Thursday from Trainz. I managed to wait a bit and the price got further discounted so I jumped on it. It is the MTH New York Central Niagara #6025, that makes 3 Niagara's for me. In the listing, it said some "pitting" on the pilot, which I took a shot in the last photo. This will eventually be bound for an upgrade as I only run Legacy and not DCS. Eventually I would want at least 5 Niagaras to sort of catch up to some other New York Central engines, but that can wait a bit when the time is right.

Yeah, not sweating it at all. Very happy with this monster. When I took it out this morning, I just kept smiling. I know that the jets on the tender appear to be smaller than what is on the VL version, but figured that they had to be bigger to do the water scoop effect. Either way, another prized addition to my ever growing New York Central fleet.

Pat, when I first saw that NY Central Tugboat at my LHS, I thought it was the most beautiful model railroad item I ever saw, told that to the LHS owner, and he wouldn't sell it to me, even for an exorbitant price!

Then, by some miracle, I saw it again on the table of a Big E vendor this past January, and he initially told me it's not for sale!  He had bought it from another vendor that morning and wanted it for his own collection. I was beside myself. LOL.

Well, I made him an offer he couldn't refuse because he had young children and needed the money. So, I finally got this Holy Grail of a tugboat. LOL, Arnold

I was up in Buzzards Bay area as a kid, that is somewhere about there. My Aunt lived in  Massachusetts for a time as her husband was stationed there in the Coast Guard. I think that was in the 80's some time but not sure if very early 80's or mid 80's. I know he got moved to Governor's Island right around the time the movie Critical Condition with Richard Pryor was being filmed.

Skip you sure got a lot of stuff coming in. Hey, is the Swift's meat coming in from Chicago? I know there was a train that was stopping in Chicago with a shipment bound east. Also, is Babe Ruth playing at Yankee Stadium today?

Yup, definitely a very busy day on the Central. I think you had posted a video of about 5 minutes long somewhere recently with all sort of engines going every which direction. Gotta love it. Niagara's must be out west I guess.

Skip,

Until now I had only seen still photos of your layout. Today the video; Wow, spectacular. You can feel the din and grit of the city as the Centrals commerce rolls on. The buildings are breathtaking.

Are your layout details including a track plan posted elsewhere? I would love to know more about the buildings. Thank you for your dedication to your creation, the layout I dreamed of as a child.

I am an amateur, trying in my own feeble way to bring the "Water Level Route" to the shores of Puget Sound, at current rate 5 more years before the whistle sings.

Thanks for all you nice comments. To answer a couple of questions, there are 4 main lines on which I routinely run 7 or 8 trains at a time thanks to Lionel Legacy. There is also an elevated subway line that has doubles as the "High Line," and a subterranean subway line as well.

The backdrops were reprints of Clarke Dunham's great Citicorp Station backdrops. I took my kids to his display in the Citicorp Building every year during the holidays as long as it was there. So yes, there are actually second representations of some of my buildings on the backdrop.

The Ford billboard has the word Ford backwards because you're looking at people who are looking in a window.

The six foot long Hellgate Bridge was custom built by Roger Farkash as I needed something to span 8 tracks.

The layout planning began in 2000 when I moved into my current home. The custom made buildings and bridges were also 17 years from planning to completion with help from very talented people along the way.

I was able to get the reprints directly from Dunham Studios in Pottersville, NY.  Clarke Dunham had table space at the York Train Meet and I was able to talk with him about my request and he was most accommodating.

@NYC FanFAN, Wow, beautiful layout, super smooth running trains in the video, amazing layout. Thank you very much for sharing the fun. The scenic back drops are very interesting, the bridge is also really nice, your layout is awesome. Your layout is spectacular with the lighted sky scrapers, the subway, just super cool.  This is a fun to view thread. Happy Railroading Everyone

I realized that Clarke Dunham's Citicorp Station has been gone for about 15 years now and some of you may be new to the hobby and have no recollection of this display. Here are a couple of photos. The display still exists at Dunham Studios and the last time I spoke to Clarke, they were looking for a suitable venue in the NYC area to bring it back to life. Clarke's work was a great inspiration for me when I planned my layout.

Pete, nice run. Cars are MTH, right? When were those produced? They look really nice.

Dave, the cars are MTH but all repaints. I wanted something plainer for the shortlines. MTH only did ESE cars for NYC. Very nice but too fancy for the locals. Lionel is doing NYC and Hudson River cars which look sharp but they priced me out. I can make two trains with engines for what they want for those cars alone.

They look great as what you made them into. I thought that MTH had done a run of those. I was going to start searching the web for them when I got back. I guess I don't have to. Yeah, Lionel really jacked the prices on the cars they produced from the MTH Tooling. I only got the Strasburg run(2000's) and a run of the B&M's. I wasn't going to get anything more from the new catalog at all.

Dave, Beth did a run of unlettered Pullman Green coaches. She may still have some. Lionel bought the molds before she could have more cars made so I had to use other cars and repaint them myself.

Well, I'd have to outsource painting, lettering and all that as my skills in that regard are extremely lacking. Maybe I'll take a look, see what's out there. Thanks again Pete.

I thought I would share an NYC classic using an MTH classic. This is a video I made of my Empire State Express set by MTH.  A bit of a walk down memory lane with Proto 1 sounds and passenger silhouettes in the windows of the cars.  This set was something for its time and I still enjoy running it in between my command control stuff.

Well I don't have too much to add, that display from Citicorp is just spectacular.  I did see it once in person and it was truly amazing.  Here are a couple of my modest trains for the post.

I've always loved the 785.  I may have to get one even though my layout won't really be big enough.  Here's my big NYC steam, a Rail King Mohawk of the first gen.

I've added some details

And had to straighten out a bent roof. I though I had a before and after shot handy but these are both afters.  I'll see if I can dig up a before.

Okay so I tracked down a couple of before photos so you can see the difference.

Is realism no longer a concern for O gauge locomotives and cars ?  As a life long NYC fan and former employee, I have to speak up about a photo that could be called almost sacriligeous - an NYC Hudson with a Vanderbilt tender !!!!

Hudsons had eight and twelve wheel and centipede tenders, all with straight sides  - never a Vanderbilt.

Same problem with those two tone gray heavyweight dining and observation cars.  Both HW cars were long gone before NYC began using that color scheme on other than streamlined cars.

The one video that they have on YouTube of the real thing is of a very imposing beast. The interesting thing that I found about watching that video is how different the Niagara is from Northerns. The height difference being chief among them because of the height in and along the Central's lines. It would have been a bad thing hitting the top of the engine going through tunnels.
