Here are some photos of my new MTH Scale Wheels GP38-2 with Proto Sound 3.0 next to an Atlas O 2R GP35. As you can see, the MTH Scale Wheels versions come with a fixed pilot and are supposedly ready for the addition of a Kadee coupler.

The handrails on the MTH unit are much thinner than on the Atlas. I only ran the engine for a bit and hope to post some photos showing the lighting this weekend. The engine ran smoothly at low speeds (unlike some of the Atlas China-drive engines) I have owned. The sound is very good, in my opinion, better than any Atlas 2R Gold engine I have owned including a GP60, GP35, and Alco C630. There are a certain number of fixed volume levels (10 or 12 or 14, I can't remember) and on a DCC system like I have, pushing one function button raises the the sound through these volume levels until it restarts at no sound. The horn is outstanding and one thing that impressed me was that the bell sound is less than the horn within a given overall volume setting. All too often on HO engines I have, fiddling with the individual CVs is necessary to try to get a "right" balance of bell, horn, prime mover, etc. This PS 3 system just seems correct/pleasing to my ear in how the sounds have been balanced. I will have a chance to play around with the other sounds (such as the prime mover) this weekend.

I picked this road name because it was available, looked sharp, but may be a candidate for a stencil to some fictitious road.

Yeah, definitely prefer the finer MU and air hoses on the later MTH units.  Some Atlas units actually have fairly fine stock MU and air hoses as well.  The MP15DC is one of those units.

I don't know when, but MTH changed to much finer add-on hose clusters. They're separate detail items. They've even put on the air hoses. My GP38-2's and Proto-3 C44-9W's have them. I definitely prefer them over the old thick ones.
