Vibrating e-Unit Postwar Lionel Erie ALCO 2032

Here are 2 videos of my e-Unit issue... Video 1 shows the engine on my workbench receiving conventional power to blow the horn.. as I do, you can see the arm in the e-Unit vibrating like crazy.

Video 2 shows the engine on the track under ZW power (this ZW has had a diode upgrade to replace the rectifier and it always hits my whistle tenders strong and decisive).

Could the coil be overly sensitive? I'm thinking 1/2 or full wave rectification across the e-unit coil?? GunrunnerJohn?, you there? Any help is appreciated.

Okay, so I installed a bridge rectifier across the e-Unit coil and it worked great, quiet as a church mouse - however, the e-unit coil gets red hot now... I thought I had this one... can anyone tell me if I need a current limiting resistor? If so, what value and wattage? Thank you.
