i am trying to make a custom sound, I am following the directions. I tried recorded the sound I wanted using the mic on the remote. I named it as well. When I play the trac I can hear some dead air coming from the train and that's it. Is there a problem with these TIU's because I read other posts about problems with this. Now I'm totally frustrated with this and want to throw somewhere. This shouldn't be so difficult with little glitches and weird little things that can't be accessed. Anyway any advise would be appreciated.

thanks,

Mike,

First, the mic isn't "terrible", rather, it simply isn't great. However, it sometimes can be hard to use and may get stuck in the "on" position. Further, when using the Mic, none of the layout's remotes are operational. This is a bug (or feature) of DCS that's been around forever and isn't going away any time soon.

The Mic is what it is. To Gregg's point, however, using isn external mic is a bit better.

First, before attempting to make a Custom Sound, practice using the built-in Mic to send your voice through the engine, as follows:

  • Start up a DCS engine making sounds
  • Press and hold the Mic button while placing the top of the remote right at your lips. Engine sounds should cease
  • Speak and you should hear your voice coming from the engine
  • Release the Mic button and engine sounds should return. If they do not, press and release the Mic button until they do return.

Once you've done the above, follow the instructions to make a Custom Sound. Be aware that, while recording the sound, you may only hear it for a short time while speaking and then it will go silent. Keep recording and it should all be there on playback.

Follow the instructions in The DCS Companion 3rd Edition on pages 37-38.

The one I had success with, using my iPhone was proto cast. I did plug in a mic into the proto dispatch port but had no luck. I don't know if I did something wrong with the mic? When using the mic, the train sounds stopped and I could hear an interruption in sound but I couldn't hear myself testing it and when I played it back, it definitely didn't record anything, just dead air. I hope there's nothing wrong with my TIU or remote.. I'm going to try again tonight when I get home. I might not be doing something right, I don't know..

To use ProtoDispatch with an external microphone, you need to turn on the external microphone, as follows:

Menu/Sound/External Mic, and press the "ON" soft key.
