VERN...........What about a similar thread for the Santa Fe that the " Pennsylvania R.R. Everyday " has.

( could be the opportunity for some competition or the opportunity for some kind combination running on a layout..............I do recall seeing a video on YouTube with a Santa Fe diesel running on a Pa. road. )

Seems sad to only have the Santa Fe restricted to one day Vern .

The Lionel Red WarBonnets in this video have completely rebuilt electronics. I just finished them the other day. The F3 A units were 2004 and 2005 models and were well used and not working! Electronics are all ERR with some homemade and Evan Designs lighting.

Well, I'm a day late for Santa Fe Sunday, but just returned from another WW (Wonderful Weekend ) at Jackson Hole. Upon returning, some Microscale decals were waiting for me to customize my Santa Fe GP30.

SF's GP30s and 35s worked the Escondido Subdivision from Oceanside. In the 1980s when my son was small, we'd watch the freight trains come into Escondido, do some switching, then head back west to Oceanside. In San Marcos, next door, there was a city park in which the trains would pass through at slow speeds with open access to the track. This is where we put coins on the rails, then watch the engines flatten them. My son still has these flattened coins, 35 years later.

Anyway, I remember that these locomotives had the "Barstow" markings, where they were serviced, which is about 150 miles north of Escondido, along with the American Flag. But Lionel's models didn't have these markings. So I finally got around to getting them from Microscale and now I'm a happy camper. Gotta love Microscale Decals.

Great video, Scott. I like your Santa Fe Fs. That latest F7 yellow bonnet set looks great, as does your F3 set with the warbonnet express reefer directly behind it. You must be an electronic wizard to have redone its innards. I have the SF warbonnet TMCC F7 set and only hope it continues going strong.

Hi Vern, sounds like you've been getting around and doing some fun travels!! Glad you enjoyed the video. You noticed the Express Reefer, found it on eBay some time ago after I saw yours! :-)

a Santa Fe U28CG from 2006 . This is a very solidly built locomotive. I was pleasantly shocked that the U28 has a cast metal chassis so it is quite heavy.  The fuel tank is also thickly casted. While the Legacy SD40-2 and Legacy SD45 with their stamped sheet metal chassis weigh in at 4.85 pounds each, the U28CG weighs in at 5.95 pounds. The wheels are I-A-I I-A-I so only the center axels are geared while the outer wheelsets are non-powered, but are sprung to keep the center axel in rail contact.  The arrangement doesn't seem to affect the pulling ability too much. The unit lacks some of the modern details such as separately applied lift rings but otherwise is highly detailed with separately applied handrails, piping around the fuel tank and the correct trucks. Paint job is awesome. The Railsounds 5 package is excellent and the horn is fantastic. I'm impressed with the build quality of this locomotive.

The U28CG was purchased by the Santa Fe in 1966 to replace aging F units on passenger trains. Right behind the cab was a boiler to supply steam to the coaches. However, after a derailment that was subsequently blamed on the locomotives, the U28CG was delegated to freight duties. The locomotives served the Santa Fe until 1980 when they were traded in for B36-7's.  All were scrapped.

Here is the U28CG pulling a mix of Menards and Lionel rolling stock.

Sante Fe sign Illinois Railway Museum. It's much bigger than it looks.

by Jessica Cilella, Web Editor The Santa Fe sign arrived at the Illinois Railway Museum in 2012 and sat in a barn for years while research into its restoration was ongoing. BNSF agreed to pay for its repairs and the construction of a new sign display, but it wasn’t until 2016 that the blue and white letters saw the light of day again. They were transported to MK Signs in Chicago, where more than 250 hours went into cleaning and repainting them. Workers added polycarbonate and wire to the letters, along with more than 1,400 energy efficient LED lights. In August 2016, the restored letters were mounted on new steelwork outside the museum. Dozens of train enthusiasts grateful for the sign’s preservation attended a relighting ceremony two months later that marked the official completion of the sign’s installation in its new home.

WBC- While just like you I saved up heavily for this monster and have had it for over 35 years. I was contemplating on selling it because I am slowly moving away from conventional to command, but when I took it out and looked at it, that was a big "NOPE!" I really do like it.

Like my other MPC locomotives, the Santa Fe Train Master has been updated with TMCC for command control.  I also put on a scale sized fuel tank. So you can have your older conventional locomotives updated to command control.

I picked up a pair of Dash 8-30-CW's yesterday at my TCA Division auction.  These are from 2009 and the detail is greatly upgraded from the 1996 one I have with just a "Protosound Ready" QSI board.  I probably will rob components out of one of my less used PS2 locomotives to upgrade the old Dash-8 so I can run all three together.

Won't they look great pulling my El Capitan?
