The prototype...

... looks like "New Haven Orange" to me.

The flash should have a similar impact on the box and the locomotive.  The box is most definitely ORANGE...the loco...?  Must have something to do with the reflectivity of cardboard vs plastic.

Personally, I prefer CNJ in the red/white color scheme..

just my opinion, mind you.

Frank, here are some thoughts regarding my first-hand look at a half-dozen or so Lionel NS SD70ACe diesels today at the LHS...

First up... Regarding the Jersey Cental model... The photos early on in this thread are indeed deceiving with slightly inaccurate color.  In fact, upon closer inspection of those earlier photos, we can see that the second image shows more of an orange tint than the other photos showing more of a yellowish tint.  So the lighting can definitely affect the way this shade of orange appears in photos.

I would characterize the orange that Lionel used on this model as a "light orange"... and definitely a shade LIGHTER than that depicted in prototype pictures.   It's definitely NOT yellow, however there IS a yellow stripe along the running board of the locomotive, which is a different color than the light orange used on other parts of the locomotive.

Now I was also able to compare the Lionel CNJ locomotive to an MTH CNJ heritage caboose, and I found the MTH blue/orange to be MUCH closer in accuracy to the prototype than Lionel's.  Enough so, that I decided against purchasing the Lionel unit, and I'll wait for the MTH CNJ model to hit the street.

Second note... All of the Lionel models have a very noticeable high-gloss coating, whereas the MTH models have a flat finish.  Ironically, the heavy gloss coating looks nice on some color schemes -- but less so on others.  I found the glossy coating to be objectionable on the Jersey Central paint scheme, but it looked more acceptable on the Reading green/yellow paint scheme.  This is gonna be a very personal decision for many folks, and there is no right or wrong, per se.  Just personal preferences.

I tend to like the gloss on Standard Gauge tinplate trains, but I really prefer the flat paint finish on my O-Gauge trains in general.  So it looks like MTH will be getting my share of NS Heritage locomotive business.

David

Good Day David,

Thank you for your report. For me, I think the glossy paint job will look great on the New York Central SD70ACe and Nickel Plate Road ES44AC. I'm really curious to view the Wabash SD70ACe though! Some people like the glossy paint and some don't....that is fine with me.

Model Railroading is a journey..............enjoy the ride!

Regards,

Frank

Anybody see the Illinois terminal engine yet?

I did see the Illinois at LHS and the green is very bright, almost lime.  Don't know if that's how the engine was in real life.  From what I was told it might be the hardest to get as a lot weren't ordered.

The Illinois Terminal green was very bright. Check out the real one online and you will see what I mean. I should get mine next week and I'll post some pictures of the I.T along with the JC and the Virginian.
