Have you tried running the locomotive to see if the fan/smoke chuffs? The fan will only come on when the cherry switch is activated by the drivers. These older units do not blow steady when the loco is stationary.

I thought the same thing. Put it back together and ran it but same result. Fan only works for 3-4 seconds when aux 9 pressed.
Aux-9 is the boost, which boosts the voltage to the smoke unit. If this is one with the internal regulator on the smoke unit, I wonder if you have an electronic issue with the regulator?

I just got back Milwaukee Road today from Lionel. It took about a week and half, however, my smoke unit is still not fixed. Having the same problem as I did before. My fear came true that it would come back unfixed because it is irregular problem with the smoke unit. The tech stated on the repair slip that he only reset the engine and found no problem. I sent Mike Regan email tonight about my disappointment with it not being fixed since I stated to them that they needed to run it for awhile before the problem occurs and that I have reset it multiple times. Hopefully, I will get a reply from him. I hope you have better luck in getting yours fixed. Ken

I heard back from Mike Reagan on Friday and he asked me the same question. I am using 180 Watt Powerhouse connected to MTH TIU. TIU output is connected to terminal block which has 2 leads out the track. I don't have legacy command base yet so I run it with TMCC.
I did some further testing over within the past couple of days. I ran the engine conventionally with my CW-80 on separate track that I set-up and got the same results with the blink lights in the cab.
Mike told me that they ran the engine for 3 hours before sending it back and the tech could not find any problems. So, I am confused to what is triggering the smoke fan unit not to properly function in my environment after 10 or 15 min and does not show any problems at Lionel. I asked him some further questions in my response email to him, so I waiting to hear back from him.
I just received my 0-8-0 back from Lionel. I'll simply state what happened. I put the loco and tender on the track, powered up (180 brick), it immediately kicked out. I checked that everything was on the track. It was but when I looked under the loco, the rear pickup was jammed stuck into the bottom of the casing, direct short out. It popped out with a light prying, put loco back on the track, powered up, but will not respond to commands. Tried original # and #1 engine ID. No sounds, no response.
The paperwork that came back from Lionel said they replaced the smoke motor.
I tried hitting reset but no dice. Any help?
woojr, try reprogramming the engine id#. More often than not Lionel service programs their own so they don't have to guess at yours.

The ID might be the last 2 or the first 2 numbers of your engine cab number. When mine came back, it was the last 2 numbers of my cab number or reprogramming may work too. Unfortunately, mine smoke unit is still malfunctioning.

Well, good news here, first 2 digits did it. I need to change it because there are two other locos starting with 1-2. Anyway, smokes great. I did notice that the new fan is so quiet I can't hear it. The original was audible from the beginning. good luck Ken
Having this issiue with my new santa fe 4-8-4 blinks 3 times. The smoking whistle works the main unit doesnt...Funny thing is the smoke unit that isnt working the motor works on it when you test it... I had a bad harness hmmm something new for once I guess..
I can only say what others told me... send it back. It worked for me, so far anyway. Good luck, John
